Title: Exposed Copper Lacquer Necessary?
Post by: DiskChris on September 12, 2012, 12:57:30 PM
So after a long drawn out battery removal surgery, my amiga 2000 is working!! I did manage to expose some copper under the 68000 socket when my screwdriver slipped trying to remove the cpu for acid damage inspection.  I tried to use my chip puller, but the chip is too thick.... Anyway should I cover the exposed traces with some kind of lacquer to prevent corrosion? What should I use? I would prefer not to have to mess with it, but only if its safe to leave that way.

IMO it's not needed.  Sure, the copper will tarnish but it won't corrode.  Electrically I don't believe it will make any difference.  I wouldn't worry!

TCMSLP is absolutely correct; the copper oxide patina conducts electricity very well and the only reasons for covering it would be to prevent further scratches or accidental shorts in the circuits exposed

Are you saying the solder mask is coming off?
