As I've got an MT-32 and an Amiga MIDI interface in the mail, I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a good MIDI sequencer to complete the package. I've nabbed some of the ones that sounded good from Aminet, but are there any other recommendations?
-
I playing with Music-X v2 right now, the live performance looks good, but editing is pain. I cant figure out how to change the instruments.
This one records the vol levers and effects, like cutoff and resonance.
Manual would be good...
The other one that is simple that I like is Octamed Studio. If you are familiar with trackers then this would be piece of cake.
I'm still looking for other alternatives.

Thanks, I hope nobody knows about that...:sealed: , let see if I can get it.

Bars & Pipes is still the best MIDI-only sequencer ever made for any platform.
But if you want something a little less resource intensive, Music-X, Dr. T's KCS, and even OctaMED SS will work well.

+1 for B&P
But ral-clan, I don't understand what you mean about it being resource intensive - it ran fine on my plain 68000 with 2MB of RAM! :)

With a 50MHz 030 and 32MB RAM, I don't think resources should be a problem ;)

I couldn't agree more.

Well, it's not resource intensive by today's standards, but I read on the B&P mailing list years ago that B&P wouldn't run well on a 68000 machine. I've always used in on a 68040, and assumed it needed at least a 68020 to run without problems.
Nice to hear otherwise. Do you do complex arrangements on a 68000?
-
I have B&P on one of the magazine's Cover disks, and I can tell you that did not run very well on 68000. Every time I try to play something, the system would freeze.
-
Hmmm, performance probably depends on what's being done with it. I remember loading in some MIDI files with the conversion tool (sMerFF?) and then using the Internal Sounds Kit to play back using Paula. Worked fine. Certainly not a complex piece, though. Maybe with more tools in use things could get sluggish.

While I suspect that it was the 68000 that was giving you problems, I should point out that early on when trying to learn how to use B&P, I experienced a lot of freezes when trying to play a song.
After a while I realised that I had stupidly left the toggle switch on my MIDI interface set to SERIAL passthrough, rather than diverting the signal to the MIDI outputs.
So maybe the freezing is because you've got some tracks set to output to a MIDI interface, but either you have your MIDI interface still set to SERIAL passthrough, or not plugged in? Maybe?

I'm in the MIDI mood this weekend so I may try again, but my A600 is 68030 now, so it should not be a problem.
I'm working with OctaMED Sound Studio right now, and it's pretty easy to navigate, so far is the easiest to program.
I'm using it with Roland GAIA, one thing I realized that GAIA can only support one patch at a time plus General Midi.

Just curious, can OctaMED sequence/play back music featuring both Amiga sampled instruments and MIDI output to an external device? It might be fun to have both going on simultaneously.

I think it can play MIDI and Amiga Sound at the same time, there is also option for Aura sound card.
You can choose Amiga Samples, MIDI, 16Bit Aura, Synth as a sound.

I was able to win it, now I got it in my hands and 400+ pages to read.

It can.

Bars & Pipes I'd say. The latest version is available here http://bnp.hansfaust.de/

It certainly can and I use it extensively.

I think MusicX is more straightforward -- or at least it's very easy to get started making music with it. I have B&P too, but I haven't put in the necessary time to learn this feature-rich package.

By the way, can anybody else get MidiTracker (http://aminet.net/package/mus/midi/MidiTracker) working? As far as I can tell I've got all the requirements, but it crashes every time I start it...

I will try it and report back later.

OctaMED is definitely worth a look - great program. Bars and Pipes is also excellent if it's just MIDI you're after.
If your Amiga's up to it, HD-Rec is probably the closest thing to a full DAW on the Amiga. Combines audio and MIDI beautiffuly. I used it exclusively to record a couple of songs, although that was a good while ago now.
