Okay, so I am getting weird errors on a hard drive.
In case I end up having to reformat, what are relative advantages and flaws of the three main amiga file systems? (Fast, Smart and Professional) ?

Please install all 3. Test them. Conduct scientific experiments with them. Document the results and publish a comprehensive review.
I have wanted to do it myself for several years but am physically unable. :(
Help me Quester-wan, ur my only hope. :)

Don't think. Just install PFS3 and be happy with it. Mark my words.

Hi Rune,
Go with PFS, it performs awesome and is very solid...

Random internet searches gives a lot more "SFS ate my partition!" posts for sure.
I am setting up a PFS3 drive now, and we'll see how that goes. Once my stuff is backed up at the speed of a particularly sluggish snail (pun somewhat intended)

I've never had any issues with SFS.
The performance of both SFS/PFS is much better that FFS.
I'm currently using PFS because it has an 060 specific version which is quicker than SFS, for 030/020 users there won't be much in it.
Lots of PFS info -> here (http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=52234&highlight=pfs3+free)

I've run tests comparing the performance of PFS3 and SFS, and PFS3 always performs better. It boots into the same Workbench setup a few seconds sooner than SFS, and takes less time to list a directory full of files.
However I have had some random errors occur with it on one machine (A1200 with DKB 1202+FPU+8MB RAM Kickstart 3.0) using two separate CF cards, one was freshly prepared and had my Workbench install extracted to it. I can't remember the exact errors now, and I haven't run a virus checker yet to confirm it wasn't simply a random virus causing the errors, but they were definitely PFS errors. I ran the PFS repair utility and it found a bunch of errors and bad files on the drive and fixed them, and I haven't seen the errors ever since.
Still, it was strange to get so many errors on a new CF card, and they were the same as I was getting on the previous card too. The next thing I'll try is switching to a different type of CF adapter, the one in there now is the model which attaches directly to the motherboard, so I'll try one that goes on the end of a short ribbon next.
These were both cheap, crap brand CF cards. On my main A1200 and on Cammy's A1200 we both have the same model 8GB SanDisk CF cards and both have Kickstart 3.1, and we have never had a single problem with our drives. All are using the Direct-SCSI version of PFS3. I've only used a 4GB and a 8GB drive in the Kickstart 3.0 machine, but only use a partition inside the first 4GB, the other equally-sized partition which was created on a KS3.1 machine is not auto-mounted, I am unsure if it will be safe to use until I get KS3.1 for that A1200 also.

FWIW, to my recollection I've never had a problem with SFS. I started using it when my YAM email folders would take for-frikken-ever to open on an FFS-formatted volume. SFS sped this up dramatically. I did some testing with PFS when it went PD and found that it is even faster than SFS for the same tasks.
As for PFS, in another thread I talked about lessons and observations moving a 10GB volume from SFS to PFS. I ran into a problem restoring the files from my lha backup and it turned out the volume had two corrupted directory entries. Fixed them with PFSDoctor and everything's been smooth, since. I never had this happen on my SFS volumes when moving from FFS.
I still have an SFS volume on this drive that I may very well leave alone, if only to see if it ever dies. It's not an active volume in the sense of regular read-write usage: it houses a lot of WHDLoad games and various programs I don't want borking up my system drive. All-in-all, PFS3 is already proving itself to me as a performance winner and I may re-do my boot partition with PFS3 instead of FFS v45.15 current running on it.

I was looking on my Amiga and the only file system option I see is "FFS". Where on the screen is the option to select "PFS"? Thanks.

It's a little bit harder than that I'm afraid, you need to install the new filesystem before you can use it.
