Title: Ibrowse! Where have I been??
Post by: Acill on December 19, 2002, 08:52:24 PM
I just decided to give Ibrowse a try and must say wow! I've been using A-Web since OS3.0 and cant believe how much better this is with Ibrowse! What do you all use for Amiga web surfing?

Used to quite like Voyager in the earlier days of the web, but now I use IBrowse.

IBrowse. No doubt about it, it's the best Amiga browser. I'm very happy that it's back in development and coming to OS4. :-)

I have both liked and disliked Ibrowse in the past times. It has some great functionality that not even modern browsers have today (yet it lacks others, like every single modern web standard), but it sure is buggy! And when it crashed I remember I had to spend an entire afternoon to get the HD validated.

I hope a lot for the new version. When is it supposed to arrive?

;-) I use A-web on my A4000, and Internet Explorer on my PCs at home and at work.  (When I had work, that is...)

I remember tho' IBrowse liked to invalidate my HD
sometimes, (at least with the FFS).  Is this no longer an issue?  So has MUI also been integrated into OS4?  (Remember all the griping about MUI being
a resource hog?)   :-?

AFAIR, MUI will be included in the OS4 package but not integrated.

As for resources - I really don't think that will be a problem!  ;-)

I don't think the disk becomes invalidated in FFS2, but I'm not 100% sure. Anyway, a good way to minimize the problem is to use a separate cache partition.

Not integrated, included. As for it being a resource hog, I suspect it leaks memory like there's no tomorrow (at least something on my system does, MUI is my prime suspect). I believe it is MOS which has MUI integrated, and uses it for almost everything.

I think you should rather suspect some of the mui custom classes. Make sure they are all up to date.
My MUI system doesn't leak memory at all - not even after 40 days of uptime ;)

Oh, and yes, it's MorphOS with the #?MUI.
AmigaOS uses ReAction with a complimentary addition of MUI.

I bought Aweb3.3 with miami around 2 years ago and is fine for me. I use Ibrowse2 demo as html viewer with Dopus.

IBrowse is just fantastic. From a user interface point of view, its how browsers should be... If only it was up to date with web standards *sigh*

Still, it works well enough to work on all the sites I visit (except 1), and works fine with my internet banking.

It only crashes occasionally, rarely enough so that it is a surprise when it does.

I'm really looking forward to the update!

I used voyager until later updates....thats when it stopped to work , and i had bought aweb allready so i tried that , but i didnt like it at all ....then with os3.9 i installed the demo/mini version of aweb...loved it , but i have always been a fanatic about IBROWSE after i installed the FONT FIX stuff (anyone remeber how fun it was to add all manually?? :))

all my needs is covered with theese 2 browsers , but i occasionally have probs with SSL ......

Also most common bug in mui is if you respond as fast as you should on AMIGA , with closing / opening windows etc...in ibrowse this will freeze it and machine will eventually reboot...DAMNED MUI!!!
so infact i sometimes just use the feature "OPEN NEW BROWSER" in ib so that i actually can work fast while imon inet also (beeing on a 8mbit connection and 060/66/240ppc) ...anyway aweb is directly slow compared to IBROWSE.

anyway mui is ok enough....but sadly has its flaws...

btw aint ib update supposed to come with os4 ? (for free i mean)

I wouldn't dream of using IB without one...
Well, it's not just for IB, it's more of a general "/tmp" partition, which I think is always a good idea to have.

IB itself leaks like a sieve, and doesn't return the memory on exit. The main culprit is supposedly the image decoders, but even with images turned off I usually have to reboot to get my RAM back if I'm going to run anything memory hungry after IB.

The memory leak fixes is one of the things I'm looking forward to the most with IB 2.3.

The IB memory leaks are one third of the reasons as to why I'm rarely browsing on an Amiga nowadays. (The other reasons of course being speed (hardware...) and compliance with at least moderately modern web standards.)

Agreed! UI wise it's excellent, with a load of really useful features which I found hard to live without until they were implemented in e.g. Galeon.
Now imagine the IB UI using the Gecko rendering engine and things like up to date Flash support...

Oh, if I only were that lucky. My bank doesn't even accept Mozilla and its derivates. :P

It was kind of funny when they blamed that on "security reasons" and still allowed IE! :)

AFAIK 2.3 will be a free upgrade for us 2.2 owners, and a "light" version (better than a "demo" but not quite the Real Thing) will be bundled with OS4.

I expect to be corrected if I've misunderstood that. :)
Title: Re: Ibrowse! hd invalidation
Post by: amiga2000 on January 07, 2003, 12:48:49 AM
is not the invalidation problem more a problem inherent to
ffs' limitations rather than ibrowse itself?

any program that is writing to disk when the computer
crashes will invalidate a ffs partition. I guess
ibrowse does crash a lot though...

So... what happened to the IBrowse New Years Eve
update? Did I miss something?

"So... what happened to the IBrowse New Years Eve

No, nothing missed, just waiting like the rest of us.  New Years Eve was a target date.  I do not know, but there were some more bugs that showed up on the Ibrowse site, so it may be that they are trying to nail them down first?  I do believe that they are close as the bugs report shows 3 open for Ibrowse and 3 open for ICE.  I am hoping that the remaining bugs are not big ones.

Yeah, Ibrowse was prone to do that when it crashed. For my solution I bought PFS and installed iBrowse on a PFS partition.. No invalidated drives since

I also use IBrowse... It used to crash on a regular basis... but since I fix that problem(some libraries were conflicting), it only crashed 1 or 2 times in the last couple of years!

I just hope to see JAVA included in OS 4.0 so IBrowse can use it! (and also for me to program in JAVA, of course)

See ya!!

@Mitrado

Unfortunatly JAVA will have to wait a while. That will arrive when DE runs on top of AmigaOS. JAVA is a large step!
