Title: Apollo 1230
Post by: lassie on September 02, 2012, 01:42:39 AM
Hi guys i got an Amiga 1200 last week, and think it is a cool machine, and today i purchased an Apollo 1230 with 32 meg. Is it a good upgrade for my Amiga? and is it good for 3D games?

For 3D, recommended min CPU is 040 or 060. My 68030 50MHz barely plays Doom at 7-10fps.
Some games are more playable then others.
Which game you have in mind?

Hi i was thinking games like Gloom and Fears and breathless. i thought i could run Doom fairly well since it had 32 mb ram but mayby i was mistaking :)

You should be fine with that card.. not for breathless but gloom and fears should b fine

Gloom and Fears should work fine, and yes Doom needs RAM, like 6-8MB, but you need more CPU power to get things running smoothly.

This is hard to answer because "playable" means different things to different people.

Fears and Alien Breed 3D both runs decent on an 030/25 and well on an 030/50.

Gloom about the same.

Breathless is playable if you tweak the screen size on a 50 mhz, as is Doom, but it won't be that smooth.
Genetic Species runs pretty decent on 50 mhz as well. Gotta have more than 8 megs of RAM for sound though, as far as I can tell.

Thanks for your input :) there is hope for some 3D action with this board. I just hope whdload still will work as it does now.

my  setup  blizzard030/50 fpu  does doom  quite well ...ran doom 2  off the cd rom wasnt bad  ..bit  slowish  ..made the screen smaller ..less detail ..was  playable  ..played heretic  ..more like watched  it ..jerky  ..ran hexen
basically  not playable  but cool to see my 1200  running  it  ..
wanted to get quake  going  but never got a copy of  the  file to run it or an original  cd  etc..so missed out on that one  ..
ive  read  ..somewhere ..that forsaken  is possible  ..on my 030 i doubt it ..but  never tried  it  ..often wondered  if the akiko  chip  in cd 32  would  make  3d better  ..i have  had  microcosm running on my 1200 without akiko chip  ..seemed it used the fpu  on the accelerator  i was using then ..

Yup! I left the Amiga scene before the 3D games became popular, and when I came back in the early 2000's I went straight to '060. Lately I've been diggin' my newly assembled A1200/030 (for WHDLoad perfection) and am really impressed with how a lot of those games run... most are 100% playable. :-)

So you think all whdload games will still work with this new board i am going to get?

With WHDload, the majority of compatibility issues are no problem at all.

Lassie, how fast CPU do you have on the card? 25/33/40/50 MHz?

Hi the Apollo 1230 board came today :) it is always nice to get some new Amiga stuff. But the ram is glued onto the board, can that gives me trouble in the future or what do you think?

I dno not think so, not much to worry about, if it should give you trouble just remove the glue and re-seat them, post a picture of it :)
