Title: Strange RAM chips
Post by: Vlabguy1 on September 01, 2012, 04:59:35 PM
Just thought I would share this image as I have never seen this type of
RAM chip before.

That is rather weird. Looks kind of like a casing over the actual chips. Some sort of heatsink? Is that a Blizzard 2040 board?

I've seen blob packaging for a few different things, but mostly ROM chips that someone didn't want removed and copied (i.e. several of my Atari carts.) Seeing it on a RAM SIMM is a little weird...

Ask Doomy.  I think you'll find those are military spec RAM chips designed to survive an Electro-Magnetic Pulse and are for use in the A2000 only.  :D

Not strange, just cheap. The RAM dice are soldered directly to the carrier PCB and then covered with epoxy(?) without intermediate packaging.

True story. The T34 tanks that the red army drove into Berlin in 1945 were built from Amiga 2000 casings.

No, I have never seen RAMs like that before. I'm almost too terrified to speak! I think I better go play some Turrican and then lay down!

Wow I didn't know my A2000's are that old!  I thought they came out in 1987.  This should drive up the price on these Ultra Rare Amigas!  ;)

Might be of entertainment seeing both Franko and Doomy bickering and flapping their gums about useless things. :)

Absolutely!  That covering helps protect the chips like a Faraday Cage but in a smaller -portable- configuration.  I believe Doomy would tell you that the technology is from Area 51 with some refinements done at Wright-Patterson AFB.

I believe you have to have MJ12 clearance to look underneath the shielding...
