Title: Suggestions for a new IRC network?
Post by: KennyR on January 20, 2004, 10:06:44 PM
Hi. We at #AmigaZeux used to be on Shadowfire, an irc network, until it changed its ircd. We don't like the changes and were forced to move.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good new server to move to?

We do have certain criteria:

* We don't want halfops. We also prefer not to have hostmasking. And we need good nickserv and chanserv services, and support for at least basic settings, like topic protection and no messaging.

* We're not interested in networks which put chars like & in front of op nicks even when not opped. It's a mIRC bastardisation and really screws up AmIRC's nick tab completion. This is why we must leave Shadowfire.

* We want a medium sized server. Not too small, not too huge. And it shouldn't be full of pirates or leet lamers. Servers with 650 channels where 625 are for leeching moviez or warez are out.

* The network needs to be stable and reliable. A netsplit or an outage more than once a week is not acceptable. Preferably it shouldn't happen more than once a month.

* It would be nice to have other Amiga or MOS channels on the server, but it's not essential.

* I shouldn't have to point this out, but sexually themed servers are out. ;) So are those set up for just gamers, leeches, pirates, flirting, etc.

* Max nicklength should be reasonable, more than 9 chars.

Servers we've already considered but rejected include sandnet, eurirc, shadowfire, webchat, arcnet, and galaxynet.

Maybe the one we at AROS use? irc.freenode.net? take a look at www.freenode.net!

Thanks, but freenode looks far too big. And we're told netsplits are very common.

well, the latest stats show about 5000 channels with nearly 15000 clients...

http://freenode.info/net_growth.shtml

that puts it in the top 15 of irc-networks, quite some size I'd say :-)

I've only been a moderate user but arcnet seems pretty small and as far as I've noticed doesn't websplit very much at all.

Unlike the place where #amiga.org is hosted, love the channel, hate the web-split. Although it seems a tad better recently.
