Title: What style of game says "amiga" to you?
Post by: runequester on August 22, 2012, 03:44:41 AM
Any particular game style or genre that feels particularly "amiga' to you?

Obviously the machine was blessed with games in all genres but the two i always think of are:

3D dungeon crawlers (like dungeon master, hired guns or eye of the beholder)

multiplayer strategy games (like settlers, kingdoms of england or warlords)

what is it to you?

Point-and-click adventures, that's what I remember the most from the classic days.

For me its arty games like psygnosis used to make. They may not have always had good gameplay but they created very imaginative and evocative worlds. im working with some guys on a game now and its somewhat inspired by psygnosis games. Its early days yet though but i hope it sees completion. Its for the pandora console.

I'll second this. I suspect that there are almost certainly early examples on earlier platforms (the resources to do a cohesive "art game" certainly existed as far back as the C64,) but between the Psygnosis titles and Another World (and I'd even class Cinemaware's loving genre homages in there,) the Amiga is without a doubt where the idea really began to take shape.

For me the famous games. Lotus series, Shadow of the beast and Turrican. Apparently Defendor of the crown was a good game but i have yet to play it.

Yeah, some Cinemaware games, Psynosis games (Shadow of the Beast I, its a real Amiga Classic), Lotus Trilogy. But i dont know why, one game always remind me Amiga, is Stunts Car Racer, 4D Sports Racing.
Lemmings its another Classic Amiga Game.
The sports games Like Epyx "Games" Series (Summer I, II The Games, Winter, World, California I and II Games). This games are very representative in C=64 too.

For the second "shot" in Amiga Gaming World, games like World Circuit, Another World (Out of this World), Flashback, Zool, says "Amiga" too.

Anyway, I forget more names for sure.. but there some games come to my mind right now..

When i think of Amiga i think of Monkey Island. I have so many memories from my childhood playing this game with my friends :-) one of the best games in my opinion. but other than that, point and click adventures were good and many on the amiga.

Anything with really smooth simple graphics, side scrolling, sprites and just
2 buttons. I try to play modern consoles but needing to learn to use 6 or 12
buttons makes the game alot less enjoyable.

My nephews make fun of me...

Platformers were you need to go UP with the stick to jump instead of pressing the button.
Definitly Amiga (or Atari) and not console-like.

I hate games where up is jump just isnt right.   Its nrealy as bad as racing games where up is accelerate.

Games that always made me feel amiga even though most were multi-platform.

Moneky Island I & II
Settlers
Lemmings
Syndicate
Lotus Games
Porno games where you had to waggle the joystick or mouse and the two people whould have sex in bad digitised graphics and the object of the games was to make the guy jizz
Hunter
Team 17 games

The list could go on .....

Defender of the Crown was an OK game, it was basically Risk, but set in England only with a couple of "side games" tacked on. But it had graphics unlike any that had ever been seen on a computer until then, so that elevated it a notch.

For me the game was Arctic Fox, which, itself, featured things never before seen on a computer at that time: white-outs, black-outs with thunderstorms, etc.

But, then, _that's_ what really defined the Amiga and its games for me: to boldly go where no computer had gone before...

Not that they're my favourite game genres, but classic platformers and footie manager games were always plentiful on the miggy.

Trackload single floppy twitch platformers that only ran on unexpanded A500s, unfortunately.

I can count on one hand and have fingers left over the number of companies that dared to suggest you have a beefier machine to get the best experience out of their games.

Platformers for me, often with glorious copper backrounds/parallax scrolling and banging mod music.

Haha, lots of good suggestions here.

And up to jump, always :) Though I get why it sucks on a D-pad.

Platform/Shooters with "adventure" elements (ie many optional things to explore) eg Gods, Turrican series, Super Wonder Boy, Shadow of the Beast series etc.

For me its hard to define it to one game or even one genre.

For me the Amiga will always be the home of good, side scrollers, top down scrollers, isometic dungeon crawlers, point & click adventures, real & turn based strategy games, flight sims...........the list is endless

I must agree I can't say one genre, there is some special feeling with Amiga games and playing with a stick, but one thing that screams Amiga and make the games great is the music in Amiga games.

Games that use Intuition for the graphics layout and the Amiga's voice synthesis for dialogue, using the Copper to display two or three separate screens at once (for a panel and the game area) with their own palettes and resolutions. As much fun as it is when a game takes advantage of the hardware, I think it's also great when they make good use of the OS too.

well, with the Amiga 1200 release and sales, back in 1992/92, they tried to do something similar, including in the A1200 Pack a Zool game Copy. That was fact.

Something like Operation Stealth, then. Great game, although the minigames sucked.

Games with cartoony animated intro-sequences that took up the entire first disk. :)

Ah, good question. What games do I most associate with the Amiga...

Settlers is one, I played that forever, and two player mode with two mice plugged in was great. That was a very Amiga-esque capability.

2D platformers too (Addams Family, Blues Brothers, Lionheart). All with the 16x16 blocks and tasty graphics and cool soundtrack.

Monkey Island and other point and click adventures.

Populous 2.

Edit: How could I forget Another World and Speedball 2?!

Scorched tanks, Worms, Lemmings
F/A18, Stuntcar Racer, F1GP
UFO, Dune 2, Syndicate
Another World, Flashback, Turrican series, Switchblade2
Lotus1,2 and 3
Canon Fodder, Sensi soccer
Monkey Island1+2, Beneath a Steel Sky
Just about any Psygnosis and Team 17 game. + probably quite a few more.

Quite a few of the above were multi platform, but for me they will only ever be Amiga games, and most were on the Amiga first.
