What are some games that were generally crap, but you enjoyed in spite of it?
My two nominations were Dogs of War (got terrible reviews, and objectively the game is awful in almost every way....but in 2 player we played the hell out of it)
and Deathmask (terrible graphics, terrible controls, terrible sound, terrible levels....but two player on my mate's A500 and we got so many hours out of that bastard)
-
Warlords
The graphics were crap.
The sound so bad we switched it off.
The player movement included "artificial stupidity".
...but multiplayer gameplay was fantastic!
-
Future Basketball and Take 'em out. Also, Floor 13 (not sure if you'd consider that a crap game though?)
-
I played F17 (F1 racer by Team 17) for a while. Don't know if I could say I enjoyed it. It certainly had realistic damage, realistic if an F1 car was made from lolly sticks held together with beer foam that is. Damned infuriating game.

I like the first Turtles game, many did not like it. but i think its cool.

I also liked Death Mask. Terrible graphics, terrible controls, terrible sound and terrible levels indeed but I liked atmosphere and completed it on my Amiga 500.
North & South received relatively poor ratings (here in Finland) but it is definitely an Amiga classic.
Supercars II received poor ratings again but this was another Amiga classic.
Nuclear War was stupid game but its humour is lovely.
Brutal Football was also stupid but I loved its stupid brutality.
Full Contact received poor reviews and gaming experience was poor. But its intro was so cool. I enjoyed this "game" without actually playing it.

Universal Military Simulator.
God awful graphics, but I used to sit down with old army mates and play it for days. Just setting up the armies took hours.
-
There are a few really bad arcade ports that I still played, because I loved the Arcade versions so much..
Outrun.. Yes, it was terrible, but it was as close as I could get to playing Outrun without going to the arcade...
And, in a similar vein..
Hard Drivin...
I was just so into those games in the arcade, that even bad ports were preferable to no ports.. ;-)
Looking back, I'm not so sure it was the right decision, but I had fun at the time...

oh and Double Dragon 1 and 3, many hate them but i still likes them :-)

Oh yeah. We used to play it with 3 or 4 people. Tons of fun.
Near the end, the turns took forever.

This is one I always pull out when doing retro-gaming with non-amiga people. It's not great on your own, but in 2 player it's mad fun.
I also liked Death Mask. Terrible graphics, terrible controls, terrible sound and terrible levels indeed but I liked atmosphere and completed it on my Amiga 500.
I remember the alien levels being rather creepy, even though they mostly involved running away from the aliens :)

I still love this game!

Kampfgruppe - Awkward controls and slow play - Got hooked on it originally on a C=64
Reach For The Stars - Cheap PC graphics and beeps, but addictive
Empire - Simple cheap and cheesy graphics and sound, but addictive
Nuclear War - May not belong on this list because its main drawback was it was dumb. But I played it because it cracks me up, rib splitting at times

There were a few bad conversions that I played a lot because the game itself was so popular at that time. Final Fight, Pit Fighter, even the original Street Fighter II. Then there were the 'bad' 3d shooters like Breathless and, much worse, Fears. Oh and there were some really ugly pc adventure game conversions like Police Quest that I kept playing.
-
And don't forget "Starfleet 1: The War Begins".
I think it was done in Basic and looked like it was converted from the Commodore PET.
Still addictive though.
-
I never played Breathless, but I was always hearing it was awesome? o_O
-
Well I must say Hellraider, I liked it but no one else did, don't remember any reviews tho.
I liked New York Warriors but not many I knew liked it and I really don't know why since it's a decent game. I think NY: Warriors would have been better with 2 player mode.
-
I thought New York Warriors did have a 2 player mode? Maybe Im confusing it with something else.
I liked Breathless, but I can see why some people didn't. Not sure if I'd class it as "crap" though. To me, that's more games that almost everyone agreed were garbage.
On the arcade conversions, I must admit I liked a lot of them (final fight, street fighter 2, strider etc). Never really played them in arcades, so I guess we didn't know better :)
Interestingly, a lot of those reviewed really well back in the day, despite being generally panned today, when MAME is available :)

Might be mistaken, long time since I played NY: Warriors, since im on a floppy night ill try it out later to see.
I also liked the beat em up arcade conversions, Street Fighter 2 was good but if you only had one FDD you had to swap alot.
-
We played Mortal Kombat 2 quite a lot. To me it was good, but it might be another where if we had played the console or arcade versions, it'd have seemed cheap.
-
Rise of the Robots; with a friend. It was our first beat-em-up
-
oh and Double Dragon
Ha!
I loved that game!
It was such a bad port of the arcade game, but seeing Billy and Jimmy Lee as midgets with blond afros was just too cool. I especially liked the voices. When you died, they said 'booleh!'.

This silly little 1 on 1 battle game that came on a PD disk. You could play the computer or another player. It had "Fasty boots" different lazer guns, mines, grenades etc. The graphics were pretty crap but the speed and playability were great. Can't remember what it was called and will never find it again.
Sort of like "Halls of things" on the ZX Spectrum. Crap graphics great game play....Actually most games on the ZX Spectrum had crap graphics? Crapper graphics?
-
Thats true...
Street Fighter II was a shame game.
-
Let me get back on Breathless. Technically it was very impressive, and it looked good, too. But play it again today and you'll see the gameplay is really bad. Enemies are all the same, level design is very simplistic (most of the time) and the only reason to continue playing is to marvel at the graphics. I think I even played it in 1x1 on my 030/50, which gave me like, 8fps or something.
I really cant agree with Mortal Kombat II, that was an excellent conversion.
-
Mortal Kombat 2 is a decent conversion, but just compare it to PC one. You'll see that your character moves a certain amount left-right even if you just wanted to move a little. Annoying...
-
could be but for the amiga (this ran on a500 with only 512kb) this was the best they could do. pc's around that time had much more memory (and if not, pc users were happy to expand) and more colours so ofcourse the game was better on that platform. dont know about the sound, though.
-
But to contribute to this thread I'd say that a "crap" game I still like is Badlands. Crap sound, contains many bugs but it's still enjoyable for me :).

Hunter!
