Well, my original plans have changed and instead of updating the computers any more I am really in a position to sell one off (it's taken all of my will power, and the weak US dollar, to withstand the special offers from Elbox really...).
A4000D/2M CHIP/16M FAST
Cyberstorm Mk2/060-66MHz/128M FAST
HD Floppy
DKB A4091
ACard SCSIDE w/IBM 40GB HD (not installed yet but waiting)
Yamaha 12x IDE CD-RW
ScanMagic Internal SD/FF
A2065
A1200/2M CHIP
Blizzard 060-50MHz/SCSI/128M FAST
HD Floppy
20GB Hitachi/IBM 2.5" IDE
ScanMagic Internal SD/FF
PCMCIA NIC
Bigfoot P/S
So, what do you think?
-
Nice machines! I'd keep both of them..
-
@adolescent:
Keep the A4000, its rarer, a better machine and you have better stuff in that one.
/Patrik
-
I'd say the A1200, if you plan to tower should you keep it.
-
Keep the A4000.. It's less hacky to upgrade (if you need to) than the A1200.
-
i'd agree, keep the A4000, and dont even think about towering it ;-)
-
I would say the a4000 although the a1200 is a nice spec .Hope the battery in the a4000 is not leaking.
-
I think you should keep both but if you realy nead the $ then sell of parts from the A1200 so you still have a machine to play old games on which wont work on 060 or need to be downgraded to ROM1.3.
-
Whichever one you DON'T want, lemme know and I'll take it off your hands, free of charge (to me, that is). :-P
-
I would sell both :-D
-
There's not too much you can do with an A1200 that you can't with the A4000, so I'd say definitely keep the A4k. Also, A1200s are easier to find if you ever decide you want one again.
-
Definately definately keep the A4000. If you get a Mediator, the 4000 is better than the 1200, but even if you don't I much prefer 4000s to 1200s (although I have both too :-).
BUT... make sure it doesn't have the original battery. If it does, replace it.
-
Just to clarify, I'm not really hurting for money. It's just that I'm going to be a father in less that 90 days. :-o So, I'm just clearing out the things that I don't or can't use regularly. (I also have an A3000/040, A600, and an A1200 that I built out of spares... All except the A3000 will probably be on the chopping block some day)
Looks like the A4000 is wining. I've never considered towering the A1200. Maybe I'd tower the A4000 or get a 4000Di. The thing that drew me to A1200 was the form factor, portableness (is that a word?) and the fact that I can plug it into the TV if needed. The only reason I got the A4000 was to get PCI. And, well you guys know how it goes...
I've already removed the battery from the A4000. Some day I'll get around to adding it back.
Oh well, keep the opinions coming.
-
'portability' is the word you were looking for
I have the same dilemma
I think I'm going to keep a basic desktop A1200 and my high spec A4000, and build a couple of towered A1200s to give to my dad. I've decided to keep the A4000 cos they're harder to come by.
Regards

Keep the A4000. If you ditch it you may never find that killer of a setup again (or at least be able to justify the price of procuring one:( ). Maybe sell the goodies in the A1200 and keep it cherry! Oh, hell! Just keep both. I can't even sell my A600 and it ain't nothing to either of your babies. The one time I thought I would my wife talked me out of it and I ended up setting it up again. :-D Damn!
@amigamad
I'm liking your avatar!

@McNorris
Heh, your wife sounds more understanding than most, to say the least. Usually it'd be a case of someone selling their Amiga cos the wife said it had to go, rather than her persuading them to keep it, lol.
-
Yeah, she's pretty cool (most of the time).
Besides the Mac I use often I still have an A600 and an Apple][c+ (w/ 1MB RAM board), but they are out in my garage with my Iron Maiden posters and the like. :-D
A long time ago we lived in a little apartment with no storage space and she convinced me to throw out all my Apple ][s except my ][c+ and some assorted Amiga parts (and a couple of 68K Macs). She was right, we needed the space. To make up for it she got us (or me?) a Gamecube.
I married the right gal.
Beautiful, geek-symbathetic, a great cook, independent, and only sometimes mean as a pissed off snake. :-D :-o :-D
-
I would keep the A4000, in fact I am. I may be crazy though, I still have 10 fuctioning Amiga systems :-D

I have to agree with most everyone else, and say keep the 4000. I have one similiar to yours, and if it came down to me only keeping one Amiga, that would be it, no doubt in my mind. (Fortunatly, it hasn't come to that point, and I have several functional machines, and a couple more collectibles tucked away. :-) )
-
Ok, I decided to keep the A4000. And, since it was the last day of Elbox's sale, I decided to take advantage and get the 4000Di. This will give me an excuse to use the Voodoo 5500 and SB128 I've been hanging onto for a few years.
I'm debating what to do with the A1200, but for sure the A600 and my backup A1200 (standard) will be up for grabs. PM me if interested. I still don't know wether I will sell the A3000. It's not the fastest of the bunch anymore, but I bought it new so it's got some sentimental value.

Hi adolescent,
Just to clarify, I'm not really hurting for money. It's just that I'm going to be a father in less that 90 days.
Oh, you poor thing. If I were you, I would dump the woman and kid and keep both of your Amiga computers. Women and children cost too much and what do men actually get out of it? Yes, keep both of your computers and dump the woman and kid. :-D
-
Yes, keep both of your computers and dump the woman and kid. :-D
I shouldn't be, but I'm laughing. :-o
-
that's right!!!
Add Amiga ONE
and
ZERO population growth!
Every generation has it's equation....

Heh, finally a good option. Unfortunately, she gets half... :-D

@adolescent 1st off, congratulations on being a father.
To help with your dilemma, the Amiga 1200 are very easy to find anymore, the Amiga 4000 is more difficult to find however, the Amiga 4000 is worth alot more $$$ than the Amiga 1200 also.
Also, KEEP the Amiga 3000... those are getting rare as well, and you said you bought it new... bottom line is: DON'T GET RID OF IT! :-D
-
Hi All-
Nobody is willing to defend keeping the A1200? Well, all geared up as the two systems are maybe the A4000 is the keeper, but if you had stock systems and wanted a few years of good hobby time expanding your Ami the A1200 could be the good choice. There are more ways to expand (trap door, clock port, pcmcia port) and more ways to output (video out). Also more fellow hobbyists with similar equipment to share insights, create market strength (ha ha) etc.
Just a thought

@adolescent
I can't believe you would actually ask that!!!!!!!
The A4000 is by far the best. It's so much more expandable, and it's just more practiable
Plus it has the advantage of looking like a real computer

She seems like one hell of a chick! But one that lets you keep all of the hardware would be much better, it would also be nice if they helped collect some old computers too! :-D ;-)

You do NOT know what you are talking about :-D

Hi iamaboringperson,
"I am the ArseMaster2000!! You do NOT know what you are talking about!! My Arkanoid levels are world famous!!!!
If you are talking about the famous DoomMaster, he did not create any levels for Arkanoid, but he did create some of the world's best maps for Doom 2, Blood, Duke Nukem, and Shadow Warrior. I have played the DoomMaster on the Kali game server and I must say that I really do like his Duke Nukem maps. They are awesome! He is on Kali almost every day. You should try playing him sometimes. He also goes by the names: Fly, Jasper, TheBitchMaker, and BigDickSlick. :-D
