Ok, I am getting ready to "bit the bullet" and use my tax return this year to buy an Amiga 1. Now the question is where? I would prefer to buy a complete system, any suggestions?

What country do you live in?
What are your needs for a computer generally do you think?
-
Try here:

In Germany try with Vesalia or KDH.
In Spain try with Amiga Superbit.

I live in the US. I am hoping to be able to buy one in the US. That VAT thing in the EU drives the cost way, way up for me.
-
oh, computer needs. Just the general stuff. I work as a software/hardware support all day long. But my needs at home are basic. Email, Web Surfing, MP3, Video stuff. I am aware that even OS4 will not be a complete solution. But it is a catch 22. If no one buys it there will not be software support forthcoming. I have seen enough to know that OS4 will most likely work for me 90% of the time or more. I am very hopeful for OS4, I absolutly will not buy the next version of MS, period. I will find a different platform. Apple holds no interest for me and I feel that it is way, way over priced. Thanks for the help.

Good for you! I'm lucky enough to be using an alpha of OS4 and I think you'll really like the finished product.
As for US dealers, Software Hut (http://www.softhut.com/cgi-bin/test/Web_store/web_store.cgi?page=catalog/hardware/amiga/amigaone.html&cart_id=4872079_19090) sell AmigaOne systems.

Hi,
I've used software hut for many years.Joe gives top notch service always. and he's a good guy.

I will checkout Software Hut. Now for a qustion completely off topic. I have setup a "signature" but even when I check "Attatch Signature" under options in the Post Message screen. It doesn't show up. Any ideas. Not a big deal but I thougt I would ask.

Since you're in the US, Compuquick in Ohio is also very good. I've received excellent hardware service from them on my classic 4000, and received very good service so far on teh sale of my A1 MOBO and associated needs. They do sell assembled systems, too.

You will find the AmigaOne more expensive.

Actually for an Apple I have seen it run about 2 grad, becasuse you have to buy a monitor also. It doesn't use the same monitor the rest of the world does. Also I have heard that you need a pretty hefty system beause OSX can be non very responsive on older Mac hardware. One thing I am sure of OS4 will be very responsive and I won't need to buy complety new hardare from the ground up.

While this was once true, I don't believe it applies now. They do have their fancy flatscreen displays, but as they use normal cards like Radeons (but with OpenFirmware ROM like Pegasos uses) that any normal PC monitor can be used now.

Radeons (but with OpenFirmware ROM like Pegasos uses)
Just a quick clarification: Pegasos OF works with x86 BIOS gfxcards aswell.
-
Base Apple starts at $799 ya know.
-
downix: and a base a1 SE costs $575 in the us..
-
Forefront also sells AmigaOne systems, and there was a fourth company listed on eyetech's site....
Eyetech Dealers (http://www.eyetech.co.uk/amigaone/dealers.php)
Apples use VGA monitors liek the rest of the world. They're a little cheaper than Amigas because of mass production.
ED: Okay 7 dealers listed :-o

You need to set "Always attach my signature" in your A.org profile, and then you'll be able to use your signature.. :-)

I would advise you to look at all the options, long and hard, before you commit any cash to anything :-)

Hello Dave
Glad you are upgrading! For this kind of serious investment make sure you look at the alternative and imo more advanced system: The Pegasos 2. Even thought the Amiga 1 is a nice board the Pegasos2 is much more advanced, cheaper, and has more features! The Amiga like Operating System MorphOS is way ahead of OS4 in development. You can get the G3 version of the Pegasos 2 for around $350! Look into it!
magnetic
I'm on a Pegasos2 G4@1ghz and loving it!

Another uninformed person knocking Apple. Gotta love it. Apple does not use any proprietary monitor connection. They have VGA and DVI just like the rest of the world. They also happen to have ADC connectors on their cards which provide USB, Power, and Video through a single cable. Pretty slick.
Also, even a $799 G4 eMac (not even close to 2 grand) is as powerful as the AmigaOne hardware that's available and OS X will run great on it.
Not trying to convince you of anything - just don't discount your options until you have the facts.

This is very true, and OS X does have a lot of nice software and eyecandy. However, if you want to get back into AmigaOS on a new PowerPC system, getting an Apple won't help. Whereas, with an AmigaOne, you can run Linux, OS X (slower than on a real mac due to lack of accelerated gfx under MOL, but usable), and very soon AmigaOS4.
I guess it just comes down to what you want from the machine.

CHeck out http://www.forefronttechnologiesinc.com/ (http://www.forefronttechnologiesinc.com/) in the US. They seem to sell cheap A1s. 750$ doesn't sound bad for an A1/G4. They also sell complete systems.
