Title: Commodore 64c Restoration Project Progress
Post by: Theretrogamingroom on July 28, 2012, 01:00:19 PM
Not Amiga, but I figured I would share anyways.

A while ago, I got a Commodore 64c that I planned on restoring soon afterwards. Although I have been really busy for the last 6 months, I finally got around to actually taking a look at it.

When I got my C64c, it looked OK on the outside, and was in good overall shape, so I picked it up and later got a Power Supply. After taking the PSU home and plugging it in, I was greeted with... nothing. Just a black screen.

So, I dismantled the computer and looked for the source of the problem. I soon found the issue was caused by something getting on the Motherboard.

Although most of the MoBo was fine, part of it was covered in some white substance and partially corroded. Although it cleaned fairly easily, I was still concerned about damaged components, as it was also obvious that it got wet. But after cleaning the MoBo and reassembling the case, I tested it and it worked like a charm!

Now that the computer works, I need to get a 5-1/4" Floppy Drive for the software that I have, as well as to save some programs that I create. I may also Retr0bright the case, although the yellowing isn't too bad. I'll just have to see how it looks next to some other gear. I also have to get a Power Supply for next project- my Vic-20 (I will post more on that project later).

So, with all of that done, I can finally focus on getting some more gear, an Amiga, perhaps? :D

Sweet that you were able to resurrect her! It's a shame how some of this stuff is abused and neglected.

Good job. I always liked the 64c because I think it looked more high tech and stylish than the old case. I have resurrected quite a few myself.

Hmm my first PC was the C64C... have always avoided buying another as I'd spend far too much on it.

Will stick with a 500 for awhile :-/

Nice.  You should retrobrite the case, it's not alot of work.  I would get some Sallys Creme developer 40 volume and a small brush and apply coats on the case while in the sun for about 6 hours.  That should be all you need to get it white as can be!
