Post by: restore2003 on January 18, 2004, 08:27:32 PM
There is a new (v1.28) update for Amithlon on aminet, i thought Amithlon was abandoned because of legal issues  :-?

@lempkee

How about you followyour own advice on this, and stay clean of threats on
stuff you have no interest in (and no clue about) ?

@restore
The kernels for Amithlon are under GPL, and anybody knowing enough bout linux
can bake his own whenever the need is feeled.

Does this mean I can download and use this new version of Amithlon, even though I never bot the original release? Somehow I doubt it's the complete Amithlon.

@Claucus

It is a hacked-down Linux-kernel, not the "RAM-Disk" containg Kick-ROM
and 68k-emu.

Absolutly useless if you don't have a full Amithlon.

Maybe because the guys at Elbox are a ignorant bunch of trojan writers who showed how much they care about the Amiga community by putting destructive code in their software? or maybe because those trojan writers tamper with drivers so non Elbox hardware will work (properly) on the mediator unless Elbox say so, also those trojan writers go around threatening the competiton.

Elbox deserve what they get, there is NO EXCUSE for what they do.

Bernie Meyer, Amithlon's author, has put out several patches for Amithlon. The update package on Aminet is just these patches collected together and wrapped up in an installer for convenience.

It's likely these represent the last patches that will ever be released for Amithlon.

The modified Linux kernel that Amithlon sits on top of is GPL so anyone can hack about with that if they want to, although at present I seem to be the only one actually doing any work on it. (kernel hacking is even harder than it sounds)

So, hardware support will continue to improve for a while but the emulator itself won't.

That just about sums it up.

I'd add that this archive does contain upgrade patches and other bits and pieces, not the core emulator or the ROM images etc.  It's released to Aminet with Bernie's full approval and 100% legal. In fact, AFAIK, with the exception of amithlon.net Aminet is the only place where these patches can be legally downloaded.

(Of course, that doesn't apply to the GPL stuff, which can be downloaded from anywhere provided the GPL is respected)
