Hi all ive just created a null modem setup and im vry happy with it however it is really slow and was wondering if there is anything i can do to speed up the transfer of files?

You can try one of the custom serial drivers. They will sometimes allow you to increase the baud rate a bit over the standard serial.device. Don't expect miracles. The Amiga serial ports are slow.
You can use a serial port expansion, provided you can find one. Even then, though, you won't have great speed, and will probably end up spending as much or more than it would cost to put together a much better solution.
So, in short, there isn't a lot to be done about it.

for its time the Amiga serial ports performed a LOT faster then standard pc serial ports. So in a sense, you're lucky :D Other then that... perhaps dedicated IO boards had faster baud rates... dunno really. Look for an Ethernet card otherwise, or a CF card ?

Agreed, a serial port expansion will offer faster bitrates.
If you have a Zorro capable Amiga, I do have a couple of Multiface3 (http://amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=577) I/O cards available. These offer serial speeds up to 115200 baud, see the review on Aminet (http://aminet.net/docs/rview/MultiFaceCard3.txt). Otherwise there's the SilverSurfer expansion for the A1200 or cards with a clock port and the VarIO from Individual Computers (http://www.jschoenfeld.com/home/indexe.htm).

If you have the cables lying about I remember parnet connections were much faster - I used to hook my A600 up to university PCs in '97 to get aminet content onto my A1200. I'd leave the A600 running in the computer science lab for an hour or so - basically my A600 was the glorified USB stick of the day!

Ok so there is not much i can do to speed it up, now for my next question....how well does Ami2PC work? has anyone had any experience? The reason i ask is becuase i would like to try going online with it. I dont want to have to resort back to my ethernet pcmcia adapter as i have a none friendly accelerator so i would only be limited to less ram to use which is not what.

Why don't you invest in a USB interface to transfer your files? Null modem transfer speeds will never be acceptable and are the method of last resort in my humble opinion.

Amiga2PC works very well once its configured properly. triple check the cable. and you might need some older version of windows; KS2+ on Amiga.

You would be better off selling your exhisting accelerator and getting a good pcmcia friendly one, you are losing one of the best things about the 1200, the pcmcia port. you could be using a simple cf to pcmcia adapter and a cf to transfer files effortlessly from a pc if you had working pcmcia. You could be using a pcmcia ethernet card also.

Extreme-ish solution would be going down to kickstart 3.0.
Several people have commented that the PCMCIA RAM compatibility issue is related to an upgraded module in kickstart 3.1.
Not an ideal solution, but a 3.0 kickstart is probably more cost effective than a new accelerator/RAM card...

ParNet is faster than serial transfer; over a network is better over all but damn near impossible if you are connecting to a PC using Win 7. CF cards and USB drives via sneaker-net is quick and easy (vs CrossDos). Samba supports most OS's, but not with Win 7. Google "idiots Guide to Samba on Amiga."
Personally I never got connected to my Win 7 PC and I either directly download to my Ami or sneaker-net with a USB drive; I have a 16gb thumb and a 320gb HDD. There ought to be a USB-to-USB way of doing this, but I haven't found it; there are Ethernet "crossover" devices to go computer to computer via the Ethernet port -- haven't done that yet either:)

I changed from serial.device to using artser, and was able to get 38,400 over my null cable. It is available from Aminet http://aminet.net/search?query=artser . I don't know how fast you wanna go, but try also setting you colors down to 4 or even 2, as this also helps.
