I went to AmigaOS (http://www.amigaos.net)'s website, and noticed 4.1. I was very happy to see a recent update. However, when I looked at the games (under Amiga OS>>Applications>>Games) I noticed LinCity as well as Super Tux Kart. I also looked at Office and in there was AbiWord.
Instead of being an original operating system, did they just build off of Linux (like ArOS)? I was very disappointed when I saw this since, if I wanted linux tools, I could just install ArOS or Ubuntu. However, I see that you can purchase the OS.
Anyone know?

AROS isn't Linux based, whatever gave you that idea?
Yes, OS4 has a LOT of Linux ports. Not many developers are interested in OS4 so ports make it look less dead.

Yes, its most Linux apps and games, but its great we can related to Linux people and I can use same apps on MINT and AOS 4 on PPC as well as on MINT on x86
Beside Hoolywood and Page Stream no other original Amiga software survived and supported AOS 4.
Everyone died in process and market is too small. Even Hyperiion deosnt make games anymore. Freespace and Quake 2 do work on OS 4 so I dont get why dont they put them.

Amiga OS 4.1 is a redesign of the Amiga OS that includes a core kernel that directly supports the PPC processor; it is uses Unix-like structures but is NOT Unix/Linux. On Classic Amiga's the operating system is purely Amiga. There are changes that made for a modern OS and compromises made for efficientcy sake.
It, as was the original Amiga OS, bases itself on a preemptive multi-taking core as does U/Linux. There are no courses in Amiga programming taught in college (at University). So that leaves Windows and the *nix's as multitasking systems being taught today. Folks follow programming principles in programming OS 4; you will find a great deal of older programs run on OS 4 on Classic Amiga's as do newer programs. What is now amazing is that you can throw a PPC processor into a motherboard and OS 4 will run on it. I just love it running on my A4000T

On Classic Amiga's the operating system is purely Amiga.
MorphOS has also avoided Linux...

AOS4 uses re-implemented exec kernel and it's source code is ported and improved from AOS3.1.

Linux tools have been ported to AOS4 because it has been possible to do to make AOS4 SW offerings more complete.

To sum up: perhaps 1% of available AOS4 compatible Application SW is ported from Linux/Unix.

Incorrect, there is also Digital Universe http://www.digitaluniverse.org.uk, it is not a Linux port. 100% Amiga code.

There's only a few people left coding for Amigaos, morphos, aros etc so i'm glad that not all of them are spending years of coding at reinventing the wheel atm until we have fixed some of the more urgent needs and there's ofcourse some areas where's it's just silly to waste time on doing something "unique" when there's great open source projects out there that can be used. Without these "linux-tools" i don't think i would have continued to use aos4 or morphos today. The operating systems is still original even if some of the apps are not.

DIgital Universe is not Amiga only, but nevermind, exceptions make rule sound right :afro:
Linux can also be run on all MOS capable machines and is also alternative to lack of some modern apps under MOS
So Linux is nice, not bad :hammer:

Oh yes it is, as the main coder I ought to know !
There used to be a Mac version as well but only the Amiga (OS4 only) version is still in development. The modern version is based on the Amiga 68k version not the defunct Mac version.

OK, no offence taken. It's a niche product for a niche user base so probably not too well known.
I just wanted to correct the misconception that it is not a 100% Amiga coded product. And yes there WAS a Mac version once but the original and the current are Amiga only ;-)
Of course being Amiga software it won't run on any of the C-USA PC/Linux machines !

Some programs are currently work in progress too, but coming. ;-)
This is very alpha at the moment but will be a modestly priced Disk Space Monitoring/Management application.
NB: Gadgets us AISS gfx but won't in the final version because the app will be commercial.
Any suggestions welcome too, of course.
