I don´t now if this is the right forum for this but i´ll post it here anyway: Just before christmas there was an an announcement that all AmigaONE owners were about to get a beta version of AmigaOS 4.0 in january.
I haven´t seen or heard anything since then and now a big part of january has past. Anyone heard anything more about that?
-
Hi,
Actually it should be out already around x-mas last year. Last thing I heard is that the "master" cd is ready and being tested now. To be honest, I believe when I see it. Since it is always just around the corner. I think that the x-mas deadline was just missed. Since we are this far in January I wonder how to define that "just missed". Maybe the same when my gf asks if I have been drinking and I will say: just one bottle.

Hi Stargazer
AFAIK delayed within the first quarter 2004
Ciao

No it was not official. The official release date for the beta is January :-)

First, did you not had February there? :-) Second, I remember always x-mas as the deadline.

Inte varje dag man ser folk från Umeå i det här forumet om vi säger så.

The original announcement says:
...to be distributed to all current AmigaOne owners shortly after the New Year.
You can find the announcement here:
"AmigaOS 4.0 Developer Pre-release" CD announced for early 2004 (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=45124)
My guess is that the OS4 team currently are working there asses of to finish this pre-release. Either that or they have got the flue. ;-)
-
You have to look at the wording of the announcements,it wasn't promised for december, it was a "we hope that.. " kinda thing cause you can never promise to deliver something that is still in development (you never know what might happen).
-

Yes, it is right.
Hope to play with OS4 beta soon....

Amiga dictionary 2003/2004.
Promise - No such word exists. Refer to "hint".
I'm curious about what justifies the "hinting" of OS4 being almost ready (mark my word, it was always about the full product, not like now about a pre-release) for far more than a whole year now. If I count the Haage und Partner version, then for almost four whole years.
The latter had a proper release date as well, 2001 august, which was later delayed to 2001 november.
So, what is the reason for hinting and keeping ppl in a state of expectation, providing them with false hopes?
Being somewhat "bluish" by community standards, even I believed the hints from time to time, with the reasoning: so much time passed by, there must be something ready. It can't take forever.
Admins are free to edit my post if it offends anyone. :-)

@ikir:
To be honest, I'm sorry for Rogue, and his brother. They rarely behind the hints/promises (even they are subject to it, but it's simply human to err), but they receive most of the negative feedback.
It's not exactly him I "targetted" at.
-
look at it this way.. at least they're showing progress. It IS going to get done...just be patient.

This isn't directed at you Coder but...frankly...what a frigging load. As if these were the days when a "master" CD had to be hand-crafted on some godawful dedicated piece of hardware and duping CDs was an all-day process after which the disks had to be sent to a plant to get produced. Oh please.
In an age when I can use my current OS of choice to drag and drop as many megabytes of data as needed onto a drive and within seconds have an ISO9660 disk with 100% integrity and then start burning off flawless copy after flawless copy...
I swear, the excuses used by everyone ever associated with anything Amiga make the ravings of collapsing 3rd world governments about to lose popular elections sound like the gospel truth.
"Those votes were invalid because of the type of truck they were delivered on."
"We did not count the votes from that province because of the criminal activity there."
Hey - maybe ol' Baghdad Bob aka Comical Ali can get a job as a spokesperson within the Amiga community?
"I swear by God himself that the OS is finished and I am using it as I type this. Microsoft has committed suicide at the gates of our corporate headquarters. The graphics API is not just running on the PPC, but on a gallium/arsenide substrated based CPU that has just been invented, I swear it by Allah!"
And the real beauty of this is that when it's released (HAHAHAHAHAHAHA) it'll be to "special" people only and it'll be a beta. Whee.
So what's the projected date now? 2005? 2166? 10168 A.D.? Oh, wait - When it's ready.
(PROTIP: IT WILL NEVER BE THE FRIG READY)

I admit, for a beta, this would be perfectly acceptable (I imagine) to most A1 users. For a release OS CD though, should be a nicely pressed copy though. For professionalism's sake.

Fleecy?

I just met with an OS4 betatester on Thursday and he told me the CD will be out next week. Hope he's right!

Thanks for all the replys, the situation is a little clearer now. I just hope they release it soon because I am no big fan of Linux...
@ patrik: En Umebo till! Kul att det finns fler som håller på Löven på det här forumet ;)

OS 3.9 will be nearly 4 years old when OS 4 comes out

Beta versions usually are. By your reasoning, I didn't get a copy of MorphOS for my BlizzPPC because I'm not 'special' enough..?

Nope, it's always been the latter. That is to say, no definate date given - which granted is frustrating, but as you seem to have no interest in it, why are you making so much noise?
(PROTIP: IT WILL NEVER BE THE FRIG READY)
Woo. It's in bold, so it must be correct...

I agree. I mean just burn it on a cd and then keep copying it. Or us a number of machines to speed it up. It's what I heard so I have no more details about that phrase.

Hmmmm
Why does this remind me of this (http://www.planetduke.com/duke4/faq/general.shtml#1.11) answer, about the releasedate of the game in question (follow the link and you'll understand).
;-)
Oh, and Stargazer: Det finns flera från Umeå här, dock hejar jag inte på löven. :-)

Insanity: Changing game plans while working on it is risky business.. It'll may end up like Boxxer was.. A lot of half-breed protos and nothing woth selling.
Edit: not realted to topic.. I'm positive makers of OS4 have locked down what hey need and are able to make it ready in reasonable time.
-
JoannaK: Please enlighten me about Boxxer.
I ment no offence, I believe that the better AOS4 is when it is released, the larger the chance of success.
But there is a balance to speak of as well, if it is released in 4 years from now it will be worthless because of the technological advances made.
Anyway, DNF is doomed, and has been for quite some time.
They began testing with the Quake-engine. After the release of quake 2 a DNF beta appeared (based on the q2 engine). There were even a few screenshots from that beta. But the beta was discarded as it was out of date long before it was ready. I think they tried the q3 engine, but that is out of date today as well.

Patience. A virtue...
One which amigans never lacked... Is my Amiga the only one which died waiting for OS4? Must put together the money for an AmigaOne...

Don't you know that's the magic secret among Amiga developers, they take the version number and decide that's how long it should take them to release the next one.. What happens when we get to 5 or 6... I don't think I will live that long, never mind ;-)
