All of a sudden I have 3 customers get their A500s with no physical damage from shipping, but the workbench floppies are demagnatised:-( I can only guess, the contents being x-rayed? :-(
-
Hmm.... Mine arrived in good shape. Didn't check the floppies, though. Maybe I should.
I might guess that they didn't do so well in the extreme cold we've been having in the Midwest. I don't think the packing terminals for UPS are heated in any way.
-
Nope... mine are good. And it sat out in the cold for an extra day, due to UPS problems.
Back to the ole' drawing board. Any reason I have a 1.3 workbench pack with a computer with a 1.2 rom, though? ;-)
-
@ Ilwrath :
Simple raison : OS v1.3 needed the same kickstart as OS v1.2 and is newer ;-)
there wont be any kickstart update until OS v2.0, appart the v1.4 A3000 specific roms (it loaded the real kick from the hard drive).

both ups and fedex xray theyre packages over 2kg i think, instead of opening em.
stickers for ANTI X-RAY should be obtained from post offices around the country.
cheers

Mine works

@voxel-
Well, sure, it'll work. I knew that already. It just seemed strange to me. I thought all new machines that left C= had the same version ROM and workbench. I guess that wasn't the way for C= refurbished the machines, though. Back when I bought my first A500 in the late 80s, it had a 1.3 kickstart with the 1.3 workbench. My friend, who bought his a few months before I bought mine, had an A500 with 1.2 ROMs and Workbench 1.2 included. I just assumed all machines shipped with matching kickstarts and workbench versions.
-
50% of these refurbs have 1.2 roms and 50% have 1.3 roms. All have WB1.3 disks.
Why? The answer died with C=.

UPS sucks. I have had nothing but problems with them. I now ONLY ship First Class Mail or Priority Mail. UPS is also too high in their shipping prices. For example: I can ship an item, First Class Mail, for $1.00. UPS wants $6.00 to ship the same item. Even Priority Mail, which is better then UPS, actually costs less. I can ship the same example item by Priority Mail for only $3.85. But UPS wants $6.00 and they SUCK !!!! I personally will NOT buy from an eBay seller that ships by UPS. It shows me that they are too lazy to take the packages to the Post Office themselves and ship the items personally. They instead want UPS to come by and pick up the packages. I personally will only buy from eBay sellers that are willing to ship my item to me either First Class mail or Priority Mail. I will also not buy from an eBay seller that does not state the S/H price in the auction description. Many eBay sellers are getting a bad reputation because they are not stating the S/H price in the auction decription. Then after the auction ends, they charge the winning bidder $15.00 to $30.00 for S/H when it actually only costs between $3.85 to $5.85. I always state the S/H price in my auctions. :-)

The Postal service is only cheaper upto 2 lbs and if you ship with any shipper for long they WILL mess up some of your packages. I can ship a 10lb package to CA for $9.00 or $10.00 via ups or fedex the same package would cost $19.30 via priority mail. Also both ups and fedex offer $100.00 of insurance for free so if something does go wrong you are covered. I ship with the postal service as well as Fedex ground so I know the good and bad of both.
-
Yeah but Fedex has been terrible lately:-( But then again I have seen problems from UPS, FedEx and USPS. None are perfect, so far UPS is still my carrier of choice.

Where were these packages shipped to? Just wondering if they were shipped international. I guess I should start lableing my shippments. "Magnetic Media- Do NOT X-Ray, pass thru Magnatometer, neutron scan, hold up to bright light, drop, punt, toss, or otherwise damage"

They were all domestic, out of state.

I used to work in the bowels of the Big Brown Machine. (UPS for those not following along).
If the average customer saw just one minute's worth
of how piss-poorly run it is, and the complete
disregard of quality and service that permeates
the entire company they would never even think
about shipping with them again.
However, what they are GREAT at is portraying
the company as a monument to efficiency and
ethics. That's why my current company is
adopting a new management philosophy: UPS'.
The "consultants" show up today. Oh, God-
Its KORE all over again. :)
I wonder when my meeting with "The Bobs" is.

I'd watch your back with UPS, Red. They still owe me 300$ for an A2000 they damaged during shipping. I didn't notice it at first, but there was a 'damaged' sticker on the box. I got it and it wouldn't power on, so I called them and they took it back to evaluate it. 3 months later, I get it back, but in a different box, the original cut up and placed in the new box. There wasn't enough packing peanuts in the box, so the computer must have been moving around, 'cos both the floppy drives and the 5 1/4" bays had been kicked or shoved in. The HDD didn't work and the 8UP card was unseated from it's socket.
Anyways, I filed a claim with them, stating that it HAD a damaged sticker on it and didn't work, but after they had sent it back to me it was in WORSE condition that it was before. I went on, blah, blah about how originally I could have sent it off for a new power supply and that now it was damaged beyond repair. They stopped replying to my emails and calls after that point.
I've never used UPS since that. For me it's Postal Mail or Fed Ex all the way.
Just my 2p.

I have been in the parcel industry for the last 7 years here in the uk.
I worked for Parcelforce Worldwide for 6 years
and recently securicor Omega Express or DHL as now is.
And red is right , sooner or later if u keep using the same carrier , something will go worng.
You have got to remeber it is a highly competitive and stressed out industry.
The employee alot of people these companies and the more people who work for u, the more chance there will be a #### up.
Most delivery driver dont care about the packages, causee they are working 12 , 13 hours a day and rushing their tits off.
The sorters in the distribution centres are even worse, cause they never have to face the customers.
I could go on and on about the parcel industry but i would be here all day.
BTW ups in the uk, hardly carry any items, and the drivers do #### all, i have seen them sitting around for hours doing nothing
-
I think in my favor is have an actual UPS account and I ship alot of packages UPS. I have only had one claim thus far, about to file a second one. As frustrating as the demagnetised disks are I doubt it's something I could file a claim on.
Just a little annoyed.. to say the least..

It's not the service, it's the people. I've seen both UPS and FedEx deliver packages in pristine shape, or mauled to death. Over the holiday season, FedEx lost a shipment of tires, and on-line tracking said the package had no tracking information. We never got the delivery, but they told the tire company that it definately was delivered. I played phone tag all week to get a replacement order shipped.
US Postal Service is my choice, but only if I get Priority. :-)
