Hi All, AmmmoJammo told me about this great Amiga Forum so here I am!
I had a mate that had a 500 in the early 90's and it made our family pc look prehistoric! I managed to get my own back in 96 and then stupidly sold it in 98 (was a bit poor at the time).
2 weeks ago I stumbled across a pommy guy selling a very clean 500+ for 8£'s (no psu) and grabbed it (shipping was expensive but worth it) and I'm about to go on a massive upgrading spree! :D
I've already acquired a Kickstart 3.1 ROM and WorkBench 3.1 Disk Set and I have a bunch of bits on the way (PSU, Scaler board, 68010 etc) - I'll prolly get an IDE68K with CF adapter, 8mb fast ram & 1mb chip ram board as well. might even drop in an Indivision ECS module too. :D
-
Welcome it's fun seeing Aussies here it's great!
-
Welcome mate,
Sounds like a nice project, an A500+ is a nice machine. Are you gettinf it shipped from the UK? They rarely come up on ebay.com.au as I dont think they were ever sold in Aus.
I also live in Adelaide ;-)
-
sounds like an Adelaide meet may be in order, up to 4 active South Australian members so far, any others?

Yeah it's winging it's way to me atm, cant wait for it to arrive!
Excellent!

Count me in! In fact I just mentioned this very idea to my Wife before checking this topic! :D

Cameng is in Waikeri, djos is in Edwardstow, I'm in Ingle Farm, so chances are MelbourneBen is actually in Melbourne :p

Welcome to the forum...
A lot of good Amiga stuff was designed and manufactured in South Australia such as the Phoenix A1000 replacement board.
As for the Amiga 500+ remove the RTC NiCad battery (if it has not been done already) as old batteries will leak and cause corrosive damage to the motherboard.
If you do wish to keep the RTC function replace the battery with either a coin battery hack http://aminet.net/search?query=lithbatt or place the replacement battery far away from the motherboard.
-
hey up adelaide guy. ex melbourne guy here. the only time I went to that country town was for the coven demo parties. town center shut down at 5pm friday night. most bored I've ever been in a capital city! at least there is plenty of time to play on the miggy ;) hehehe

Yeah so I've been told, have already ordered a cr2032 kit from amigakit for it.

That just shows you haven't been here for 20 years - I moved back in 2007 (spent 7 years in Melbourne & 3 before that in Sydney) and its actually pretty decent now if you ignore the poor driving standards. :D

Hi mate, I'm definately up for an Adelaide meet. I created my handle when I lived in Melbourne, we moved to Adelaide 3 years ago.
I know there is already an Amiga/PC computer club in Unley but I'm not sure if this is still active. I only know about that from doing a Google search, I've never heard the group memtioned on any of the Amiga forums. So probably best to form our own group.
Anyone got any idea's for a meeting place? Some where around the city would probably be best.

Yeah I found some refs to an Adelaide Amiga group too but the site hadn't been updated In years from what I could tell.
Amusingly enuf I used to work for Adam Internet as their Customer Delivery manager and that company was born out of a bbs for the ADelaide AMiga user group. :D
Somewhere close to the city would certainly be the most central location for all, initially we could get the ball rolling by meeting at a pub like the Tap inn over some snitzel's and beer and throw around some ideas for the location of an actual user group meet?
-
Waikeri, awesome our family used to spend Easters up the river near there!
As I write this I am looking at the river (8 acres absolute river frontage:) or should I go and do some work in the shed, go fishing or open up my newly acquired A2000 and see what goodies are inside.

So jealous right now as I'm standing at a railway station waiting for a train with 0 motivation and too much work I know I need to do when I arrive at the office! :(

Yeah I heard about the Adelaide Amiga (Adam) beginnings, interesting stuff ;-) Someone also mentioned the Phoenix board for the A1000, I recently learnt that was built/designed in a small office just off the Anzac Highway in Keswick.
The Tap inn would be good for me, how about a Friday night after work? Shall we pencil in the 13th of July? Is that date/time ok with other Adelaide people?

I'll have to check with the Minister for Social Affairs (aka the Wife) but that should be ok.

I have a Phoenix add on board (RAM and ROM I think) for my A1000. I wonder if that was made there? Did somebody say Pub? I will see if I can make it, maybe later that night due to travel time.

Good stuff, so we have 3 for the first meeting so far! ;-)
I think all Phoenix boards were made there. I have a stack of old Australian Amiga mags and its interesting to see the amount of parts that were made in Australia, from RAM boards through to Joypads. We dont see that so much these days :(
-
Make that 4. I'm in Redwood Park.

Yep. I am from there originally but now living in Newcastle. I would attend your meeting but can't get there so count me out :(
But i have a great idea for you guys when you meet. You can paint the giant silver ball in Rundle Mall red and white and find a way to detach it and then turn it into a real life boing ball! But you will have to be VERY drunk to make this work well. And don't forget to take photos or make a video of it as proof. Think of it as your initiation and - I have to go me potatoes are about to burn! brb...
-
LOl, thats sounds like fun!
Chap's, my minister for social affairs and handbag collecting has advised we have a pretty full weekend this weekend so how about Friday the 22nd for our meet instead?
-

Hi All,
I live in Adelaide too! Lived here on and off for almost 25 years now...
I have been a member at Amigaworld.net for a long while and I check Amiga.org website from time to time - only time to post in one place really though so it has always been Amigaworld.net....sorry amiga.org!
Saw some fellow South Australian Amiga users pop up here in the last few days so thought I should sign up to Amiga.org so I could say hello and introduce myself!
As I said before I am from Adelaide, Australia, and I have and still own many and various Amiga (and other) hardware!
I started using Amiga's in 1988 when I helped my Perth High School's Art department setup an Amiga 1000! My first Amiga was an Amiga 500 in late 1988.
Since then I have owned pretty much every Amiga out there except a CDTV...
I have started keeping a blog on the AmigaOne X1000. If anyone is interested, it is at http://amigax1000.blogspot.com.au/
At one stage I was part of an Amiga demo group called "The Experience", and we released our last AGA demo "Terminal" in 1998. I think it is available on pouet.net if you are interested! My handle was "Epsilon", hence my name! My avatar came from our long closed Experience website which I used to run. I went to Coven in 1996, and 1997. If you were there I was the guy playing all the Amiga 1200 AGA demos all night...
At the moment my main completed Amiga hardware is AmigaOne X1000 (my pride and joy), Amiga 4000T/060, Amiga 4000D/PPC-060, Amiga 1200/060, Amiga 2000/030, CD32, eMac (MorphOS 3.0) and a Minimig. I currently play around with Kryoflux Amiga write support (since reading about it in Amiga Future) and it works great!
I guess this qualifies me as an Amiga Geek! (http://amigaworld.net/images/smilies/icon_geek.gif)
Look forward to seeing you all around in the forums either here or at Amigaworld.net.
Catcha,
Epsilon

Awesome stuff, welcome epsilon! :)

Hi mate, yes - I can do the 22nd but can't have a late one as got daugthers christening that weekend. How is the 22nd for everyone else?

Good to hear from you Epsilon, sounds like you have heaps of Amiga experience. Do you work in I.T. in Adelaide? Would you be interested in joining us for the meet? Would be good to have you onboard.
-
I work afternoons, so I'd be out for Friday "after work"
Plus I don't drink.
And I imagine the Tap Inn would be rather full on a Friday night..

True, other good options are the café's on the parade at Norwood? There's a few that do decent pizza iirc and those that do want to have a beer can and the teetotallers hopefully wont feel out of place?
PS, prolly easier to talk at a cafe too as lower noise levels.
PSS, so tempted to ask how you get your fluid intake not drinking and all! :D ;)

A pizza in Norwood sounds good to me. How about a weekday or weekend lunch time?
@AmmoJammo, I'm not a big drinker either, so your not alone ;-)

A weekend day for lunch or dinner would also work for me.
-
I'd prefer a weekend. A weekday would tend to interfere with work a bit :lol
Pizza sounds good.

Pizza sounds good.
It does indeed!

Hmm you guys got me thinking. Any Kiwi's out there? :-)

They're all over here mate! ;)
:D
-
How about Saturday August the 4th for Lunch somewhere in Norwood? is that date good for everyone?
-
I most likely would have completely lost interest in the Amiga by then xD
I just bought a Sega Megadrive :p
-
The 4th is good for me. Now we need a venue.
-
That's 6 weeks away! :o
-
That's 6 weeks away! :o
I know but atleast it gives plenty of notice.
So far we have 4 confirmed attendees:
me
djos
ammojammo
haranguer
Cameng, Epsilon, can you make it?
How about Cafe bravo on the parade in Norwood?
-

In theory ,yes. I just have to convince the boss that you guys won't be a bad influence :laugh1:
-
so, you're going to lie? :p
-
Hi,
Another Adelaidian, well for on and off for 20yrs.
I'd be in for a meet, I haven't had the miggies out of the box for a little while and someone walked off with my 4000/30 which still upsets me.
But I have a few bits and pieces..
-
Awesome, Welcome to the gang! :D
-
Cheers!
Will be good to get back into the Amiga scene
-
Adelaidian here! I'm keen to tag along with my A1200.
-
Awesome, i'm amazed how many Adelaide based Amigan's there are!
-
Hrmm. You know, tldaley, newbee and acefnq are all Adelaide next gen Amiga owners too (and Epsilon and myself).
I wouldn't be bringing any equipment anywhere (my mode is transport is bus). I'm probably the fussiest eater out of the lot. My diet is horrible. So, sharing a pizza is out of the question unless you guys like almost nothing on it :) Of course that doesn't stop anyone else ordering a pizza and sharing it. I'll just be the odd one out. I might be seen as a bit of a SAP (http://bit.ly/9pXwLt) at times.
A like the idea of a cafe or hotel, and it allows us to individually order whatever we like.
-
Wooohoo, the Wife told me my 500+ showed up today so now im just waiting on the PSU from Amiga kit and some other bits - in the mean time i'll de-solder the battery in preparation for my CR2032 kit arriving and give it a general check over. :D
-
They're all over here mate! ;)
:D
Yes the brain drain they call it. Must admit Aussie is looking good at the moment :-)
-
cool :laugh1:
That's 7 confirmed and 1 maybe. I suggested cafe bravo because I think it sells a variety of food so should be good for everyone, its also licensed.
MickJT, are you the guy that wrote the MSN client?
For the second meeting it might be good to meet at a community hall or somewhere similiar so we can demo machines etc. I think this is what the Melbourne group do. Would also be a good way to assist each other with troubleshooting and share ideas.
-
welcome wakido and mylo, will be good to have you at the meet.
-
@MelbourneBen
Yeah. I did the arexx AmiMSN client and also ported a bunch of stuff like ffmpeg, Lugaru, a modified e-uae and the xamos port. But make no mistake; I can't code at all (other than arexx), except for very minor modifications.
"Hello World" is the best I can do. Compiling is relatively easy.
-

Hint. Suggest a LIR2032 lithium coin battery which is 3.6V. The Amiga will expect 3.5v and a CR2032 @3V will probably work fine but may drop out earlier than expected.
-
I just checked and it was the lir2032 that I ordered.
-
Arrr. An Amiga 500, a wintery night, and a marathon session of Loopz. those were the days. Welcome to the new Croweaters. ;)
-
Btw, I've started my 500+ project topic here: http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?p=696532#post696532
Unfortunately it's gonna require some work to restore. :( (might need your mad soldering skillz AJ)

Sorry for the delay in responding - been off sick in bed the whole of last week.
Cafe Bravo sounds good to me, look forward to catch up with some fellow Adelaidean Amigans!
I think in the first instance getting together informally is good, and then we can decide after that whether we want to have a community centre room hired or similar based regular event that allows us to bring machines, etc. I missed out on the user group thing when it was most popular, and with such a small Amiga community in Adelaide, it would be good to get something happening locally so we can help each other out and learn more about our Amigas.
Catcha,
Epsilon
-
Bravo is pretty easy here too.
Wow - I know they say Adelaide is 30miutes and 30 years behind, but I am very surprised by the number of Ami users here...

Good stuff Epsilon, agree.
Looking forward too it...all being well we should have about 8 attendee's.

...and then?

So everyone seems happy with August 4th and Cafe Bravo on the Parade at Norwood - is everyone available for dinner, or is lunch the preferred option?

Breakfast for 1 coming right up! :p

They dont exist, I settled for "tolerates me being a geek and finds my geekness occasionally useful". :D
I am winning her slowly over to the Geekside tho, we now own 3 cleaning Robots (1 about to be sold tho leaving a Neato XV-11 & iRobot Scooba 380) and she does use most of my gadgets despite being in need of major convincing to let me buy most of them. :p
I am having a lot of fun training our cute little 14 month old daughter in the ways of the geek; she loves gadgets like remotes, ipad, iphones and even knows how to start our Neato Robot off on its cleaning mission! :D

Ellen Page was on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson a few weeks ago, and mentioned that she often looked in pawn shops for Sega Genesis gear...

@djos,
I notice from your signature that you have a GBS-8220 scandoubler and flickerfixer, does this work well? I'm especially interested how it works in interlaced modes, have you been able to test these?

I give mine about 3.5/10 in non interlaced mode... I can't imagine it scoring better interlaced...
its usable, its bearable, but it really isn't great. If you have no other option, it is a lot better than composite video.

I havent been able to test most of the modes as my Miggy is still undergoing repairs (hoping some parts will show up today) but it seems to work ok with the limited testing i've run.
Later on i'll prolly install an Indivision ECS Scandoubler.
-
2 weeks till the 1st Adelaide Amiga GTG in a really long time! :)
-
looking forward too it ;-)
-
So chaps, 1pm this saturday @ Cafe Bravo?
-
I won't be there.
far too much notice, never took note of the date, kinda lost interest in the Amiga anyway.
-

bit fickle are we mate? ;)

I'll be there. Plenty of notice, just the way I like it, and I'll never lose interest in the Amiga. ;-)

Your post needs a "like" button. :D
PS, if I could get confirmations of who is coming by COB tomorrow I'll book us a table.
-
I'll be there ;-) See you at 1pm.
-
-
It'd be good to know who's still coming, and how to even recognize who's who.
PS, if I could get confirmations of who is coming by COB tomorrow I'll book us a table.
What's COB? (Guessing "close of business"?)
-
You guessed correct, when I know numbers I'll book the table under "Amiga club"
I'm fairly easy to spot as I'm 6' tall with short spiky blonde hair and blue eyes. :)
I'll post a pic later.
-
lol...djos...that sounds just like my description.
I'm 6 feet tall, shaved head (blonde hair) and blue eyes...I'm the Pommie, but you won't know that until I open my mouth.
I'm sure we'll figure it out.
-
:D
-
It'd be good to know the real names of people in advance. Mine is obvious, but I go by "Michael".
-
Derek :)
-
I would still like to attend at the cafe on saturday as planned, but due to some urgent unrelated personal medical issues that came up today I may not be able to make it.
Please mark me down as a maybe.
I really want to go but attendance is dependant on factors beyond my control tomorrow. If I can I will update tomorrow.
Catcha,
Epsilon
-
I'm Ian

6 feet tall, shaved head, but not of the erian race, so hazel or green eyes depending on mood. Put me down as a maybe, but don't worry about saving a seat for me. If I don't make it good luck with your first meet. May the bouncing ball be with you.
-
Ben
-
Well, I hope I know who's who and where to sit. It'd be awkward if I turned up first and didn't see anything in particular that would indicate I found the right people. I don't want to go up to people and say "Hey are you from the amiga.org forum?".
6 foot shaved head guy, OK. Lets hope that's the only one :) Anyone going to be wearing a particular T-Shirt or jumper with a certain logo on it? Mine are all plain.
Edit: How am I supposed to know someone with a shaved head has blonde hair? :)
If this table is booked under a specific name or group and certain amount of people, that'd be good to know.
-
I've booked a table for 8 (just in case more ppl show) for 1pm under my name, Derek. See you all there. :)
-

Probably only 4 people will turn up :)
-
Yeah I was being overly cautious :D
-
Really sorry all but today's medical results mean I am unable to attend tomorrow's meeting. Really sorry and I hope I can go to the next meeting as I really want to go.
Catcha,
Epsilon
-
Thank you Ben and Derek for organising this but I will not be able to make it.
By the way my name is Cameron and just for the record I have very short brunette hair, a hint of grey and a big nose:razz:
-
:D no worries.
-
Sorry to hear that Epsilon, hope you can make it next time.
Cameron, do you live in Country SA?
Ian, Derek, Michael - Was good to meet you guys earlier. As discussed I think we should organise our next meeting in a location where we can setup some equipment, I'll bring my A1200 and 1084s.
I can't really host anything here as we don't have the space. Is anyone else able to host? If not we could look at hiring a small room in a community centre, I doubt it would cost much. Let me know your thoughts.
-
Motion seconded, Good catch up today guys :)
Yeah I don't have the room either unfortunately, I reckon a council comunity center meeting room might be the go, no idea of cost tho.
-

I'll ring around and find out the cost and let you know. I assume Norwood or the surrounds would be about central for everyone?
-
Works for me. :)

@djos,
I notice from your signature that you have a GBS-8220 scandoubler and flickerfixer, does this work well? I'm especially interested how it works in interlaced modes, have you been able to test these?
Hey Ben, I've finally been able to test my GBS-8220 properly and there is a small amount of ghosting noticable playing games but I've stopped noticing it pretty quickly.
I just wish I could afford a nice new 60" Panasonic Plasma for the lounge cause my 50" Pioneer plasma Monitor would be in my Study/Games room real fast! :D

Hi All,
Sorry about not getting to the catch up the other day, life is just very busy at the moment.
I'd love to catch up soon though.
-
No worries mate, hopefully we can get a community center room for a reasonable cost and all drag our Miggy's over. :)

Hi Derek, Thanks for the feedback, I think I'm going to stick with my 1084s for a little longer, atleast until the new firmware comes out for the Indi MK2. Then I'll probably either buy an Indi (assuming the reviews are good with the new fw) or get a PC monitor that can sync down to native 15Khz modes. I'm quite happy running my Amiga in a low res (640 x 200) as I like it to be responsive but it would be nice to have 640 x 480 interlaced working through the indi mk2 as I doubt that would slow things down too much.
@Wakido - No worries mate, as mentioned by Derek we'll have another meeting soon and bring along our hardware.
-
Guys, if you can pardon the mess - I'm in the middle of renovations - my place will be available for our next meeting. The computer room gets painted tomorrow, and I'll be able to migrate my X1000 and my Evil PCs in there, and I'll set up a couple of A500s and my old A1200, as well as the C64 & the Turbo Chameleon ...
I'll try to leave enough space for your machines ;-)
I live in the North East, just down the road from Tea Tree Plaza.
Now, we've just gotta pick a day and time ...
-
I'll have to set up the CDTV too. I haven't tried it out yet.
-
Sounds Good mate, I look forward to it! :)
Hopefully my Miggy's DVD/CF-IDE/PSU combo will be finished by then and I can bring it along too.
-
I hope so too. I want to do something similar for one of the A500s and I'd love to see what you've done.
-
Sounds great Ian, How about a Friday night some time in September? I think I'm available pretty much any Friday night.

I'll just bring it along regardless then. :)

Looks like I was a little optimistic about when the computer room will be ready :-( Still needs some preparation before the final coat.
I'm hoping everything will be ready in about 5 weeks. Hope I'm not still being optimistic ...
I booted up my old 1200 last night, and, after a bit of fiddling, it booted up nicely.
But this morning all I get is the Kickstart screen. Alas, my hard drive is pining for the fiords. The A1200 lasted just long enough to remind me how pretty she is :-(

No worries mate, 5 weeks is fine. It'll be like a commodore museum when you're finished!

That's the aim. I need a few more old computers though. What I wouldn't give for a PET.
