Post by: magnetic on June 05, 2012, 10:59:28 PM
Hey guys what Mame games can I run with blizz 060@66mhz , 128mb ram, and AgA?

Anyone have experience with this? Thanks

the oldest ones from 1977-1981 aka the ones that uses 1 cpu only
try galaxians,galaga,frogger,space invaders etc
anyways in most of them I don't think you can reach 60fps on the 060

those roms are more complex,2 cpus, extra sound chips.....not a work for the 060...they will run maybe at 8 or 9 fps

the compatibility on mame is according to the Amiga mame version, for ex on aminet you will found mame 0.35 for the 060
there is a compatibility game list included on mame 0.35
For game information run a game, press tab and browse to game information...you need the file mameinfo.dat in mame dir
For example the ghost'n goblins game rom uses 2 cpus Z80 and M6809 + 2 sound chips YM2203

Sorry to highjack this thread:

Would the performance issues improve quite a lot with an RTG card?

And finally, on 060 and RTG will it be possible to play Raiden II by Seibu Kaihatsu ( my definite favourite mame game)?

Thank you for your answers

The mame performance on RTG is idem than AGA...or AGA even is faster
the game raiden 1 uses 3 cpus + 2 sound chips, I calculate it needs at least 1ghz proccessor to emulate all those chips
I do no have game information of raiden 2 but I imagine must be hardest to emulate than raiden 1

RTG will always be a lot faster than AGA unless that version of MAME is doing something really badly wrong. MAME was never designed for indexed palette displays, and certainly not for bitplanes!
You'll also need very old ROMs as the 68k version is prehistoric now in MAME terms, and the ROM sets have changed a great deal.
You really need a PPC to stand a chance of good results I'm afraid. Maybe one or two really simple games will work acceptably if you have a graphics card.
Also, note that some older games are a lot more complex than the newer ones, so don't go by age alone!

Spirantho why did the other poster list the games that would work?  Is there someone who runs mame on 68k aga?

Yes, the ROMs I linked are suitable for the Amiga version (which is 0.35.12).

Yes, I have, but it is a shame the 68K port of MAME hasn't been updated lately...

He said they'd work, he didn't say how fast. :)

To be honest, I don't know how fast they would run but I do know they'd run better on RTG than AGA (unless as I said something's badly wrong with the port, anyway). Tempted to go and try them but I need to sort out why my A4000's network card is a bit flakey on the Prometheus.

@Minuous
Part of the reason it's not been updated is because MAME long ago changed focus from speed to accuracy. Hence anything past about the 0.35 will be woefully slow on an 060, even at 100MHz with a graphics card - certainly the later versions of MAME wouldn't run anything at all usably on an AGA Amiga. NG Amiga, yes, but not AGA.

I just downloaded the rar file uploaded by minous
I tested it on winuae without JIT....which on my PC sets aprox the performance of a 060/80mhz
all games worked but all of them were slow unplaylable none of them reached 60fps
except for

space invaders
cyberserk
tutankhm

can anyone test this on a real Amiga + 060 and confirm? thx

Yes, I normally use WinUAE to run them, I imagine they would be too slow otherwise...

bitplanes no, but originally MAME was designed for 256 colour modes. It's only relatively recently that everything is done in true colour.

Not the 060 side of the accelerator, but I remember being able to run everything up to maybe Atari System I (Marble Madness, etc) on the Blizzard PPC/240.  I would have to reduce fullscreen colors to 32 or 64 to get it playable though.  Tried the 060 version, but was unable to get anything but pacman and the like to run at speed.

I got my A4000 working. :)

I just tried Ghouls'n'Ghosts on my CS-PPC. It was quite interesting...

OS3.9 AGA:  31% speed
OS3.9 Voodoo III (Prometheus): 30% speed (this should not be slower!)
OS4.0 Voodoo III (Prometheus): 35% speed!

First off, there's no way AGA should be faster, even if only 1%. Something's a bit squiffy there.
To back up the "something squiffy" theory, it's crazy that it's faster in OS4. The 68K emulation is very good, even in OS 4.0, but 18% faster than a 68060?!

My CSPPC is a 604e@200,68060@50, by the way.

Well, if Petunia on a 604@200MHz is only 18% faster than a 060, it's rather disappointing, actually

I bet the Prometheus isn`t doing DMA - there`s a thread or two about it somewhere.  Something about a firmware update.

It never did without update.

DMA is something different, it doesn't affect the speed of software like this.

As for it being 18% faster, that's really quite surprising. I know on the face of it it may seem like Petunia should be much faster, but remember the 604e is only 4x the clock speed of the 68060, which is also equipped with some quite fancy speed-up things like caches and stuff. Also remember that the 604e may run at 200MHz but the memory bus definitely doesn't, and in fact the 604e spends quite a bit of time throttled by the lack of L2 cache.

Either way, I'd say it shows that Petunia really is a pretty fine CPU emulation.
