Title: Palette Merging Software?
Post by: XDelusion on June 04, 2012, 04:50:46 PM
I am back to work on the Alien Breed 3D total conversion for BOOM.

One tedious assignment I've been dumped into is the process of adjusting the game's palette to accommodate all the colors used within the sprites and textures.

What I did was use the palette from the photo in my avatar. This is great for a number of things, but eventually I run into a texture or sprite from AB3D that has colors not included in the palette I extracted.

The solution so far has been to load up DeepSea Doom editor and use it's palette tool to manually adjust duplicate colors to match those missing in the sprites or textures I need to use. If I do not adjust the palette the textures and sprites will loose their original color and end up looking bad, or just off.

Anyhow, what I would like to find is a palette tool (for Amiga or what ever I just need one), that will allow me to take two palette files and merge them. Something that will automatically replace duplicate colors in my main palette, and replace them with the missing colors from the palette I'm merging into it, yet without exceeding the color limit of 256.

Is this possible, does such a tool exist?

It would REALLY come in handy!

I remember AdPro used to have a similar option, not sure about other image processing software such as PPaint, Pixmate and Image FX; another candidate is on the emulated mac side debabelizer, that as a 'superpalette' function similar to the one you need.

Looks like that Mac software is for OSX and commercial at that.

A shame, I read through the info and it sounds like it does EXACTLY what I need it to do.

I'll have a look at Adpro.

I used to use Personal Paint for this sort of thing when I was making my AB3D2 mod. I would make various wall textures (also "borrow" from doom, quake etc.) and try to get them down to 32 colours or so each. Then load them as brushes onto a 256 colour image with the floyd-steinberg remapping enabled, before adding them. I seem to recall the results weren't at all bad.

YES!!! You saved me SOOOOO VERY MUCH TIME!!!!

Debabelizer apparently was ported to Windows XP and a trial version was available. It will corrupt the image files that you save by putting their logo all over it, but I was able to extract the palette that I created with it's SuperPalette feature and life has not been the same since.

So again, thank you thank you thank you!!!

Amiga could REALLY use some software such as this. Amazing!!!
