Title: Free DNS?
Post by: Dmaster on May 19, 2012, 07:13:06 PM
Hello to all.  I would like to run my BBS again.  Does anyone know of a free DNS service provider?  It seems dyndns.org is no longer free.  Thanks.

Seriously though, you could give these a try (not tried any of them myself, it's just a list that one of my Synology NAS servers "suggested" me when browsing that area):

http://www.dyndns.org/
http://www.no-ip.com/
http://www.3322.org/
http://www.selfhost.de/
http://www.twodns.de/
http://ddo.jp/
http://www.changeip.com/
https://www.dnspod.com/ (*)
http://www.zoneedit.com/ (*)

(*) = Get your own domain name(?)

dyndns works just fine, and iirc there's an Amiga program for it - though most routers these days support dynamic DNS.

But he didn't say dyndns didn't work.
He said it's no longer free...

Kind of a bummer when that's the only option in so many routers out there...

Hmm..

Be free..
Get yourself embedded in lots of firmware..

THEN CHARGE...

Good business model..  ;-)

I wrote an ARexx script a while back (1999) which I suspect is either still compatible or can be made compatible.  DynDNS does still offer the free service, but you are required to sign up for a 30 day trial of Pro, first.  Sad end of an era.

I just checked and it looks like its a 14 day trial now, but you can keep a domain name for free after the trial.

I'm guessing you need a credit card to set up your account, and then you need to remember to cancel it to not be charged...

Well, still better than no free option anymore..

From the site:
-----------------------------
When the trial ends

After the 14 day trial, you will be charged our low yearly fee of  just $20 a year (or sign up for five years and get 10% off!) to keep  your DynDNS Pro service. Only valid major credit cards (not PayPal) are  accepted for DynDNS Pro trials.
Decide you no longer want the DynDNS Pro trial? Just cancel your  DynDNS Pro trial within 14 days and you will not be charged. You may  keep one hostname free of charge for trying out the DynDNS Pro trial.

So, sign up then cancel is what it sounds like.  DynDNS has the name recognition which will benefit them, but there are a massive number of services out there.  Having said that, there are also a lot of firmwares for routers and modems which support nothing but DynDNS or only a few others like TZO.  (And TZO ain't free.)

buy a domain and manage it at somewhere like https://dns.he.net/ and you can keep it up to date with your ip via the api.

after what dyndns.org did to editdns and everydns i wont go near em. rip off service anyway.

Yeah... I think you have to renew your free registration with them every so often, but I've had one through them for many years now, and no problems.  (Though it may currently be expired - I haven't had to use it in a few months, and that is the usual cutoff.  :D  )

Hello all. I am still trying to find a good DNS service.  In the mean time.  Can anyone test and try telneting to:  10.0.0.2  or 76.118.112.178 and please let me know if anything happens.  Its been a while.  And to moderator, if this is in wrong thread please accept my apologies.  Thanks.

Try telnet to: necrobbs.strangled.net  I hope I have port forwarding set correctly.  It's been a long time.  Thanks.

What? I had no trouble telnetting to 10.0.0.2. 127.0.0.1 also works perfectly :D.

Anyway, I can telnet to necrobbs.strangled.net without problems. But I'm seeing this:
-------------------------------------------------------------
                           CONEXANT SYSTEMS, INC.
ACCESS RUNNER ADSL CONSOLE PORT  3.29

                        Invalid password, please try again

-------------------------------------------------------------

I think you opened your ADSL modem up to the outside world! You don't want that! At least your admin password isn't 'admin'..
