Darkage....I recently found a few, the nearest I found to AUS was in NZ (not that it matters with Telnet). When I next go on my Amiga I'll copy and paste you  my list.

The ones I did find weren't very active or have many interesting files to download. The best was probably the amiexpress.co.uk BBS, which you already know about.

If anyone knows of any active BBS's I'd also like to hear about them.

The amiexpress.co.uk  one is back up and responding now... Just checked again.

Thanks I appreciate the details of the NZ one..

Hmm just checked out a few from the bbsregistry.com.au that were active going back 3 years ago or soo.. seem all dead now :(

MelbourneBen, were you a BBS user in Melb any chance a long long time ago?

Hi Mate, I grew up in England and Melbourneben was the first place I lived in Australia hence the handle.

I visited it with my A500 yesterday:

That's EXACTLY the way it should be visited :)  Looks good in Topaz!

FYI - I am in Afghanistan and can't use telnet/ssh so I can't do any maintenance on the bbs.  So user accounts, stuck nodes, etc, won't be fixed and updated for a week or two.  Also, new address:  montereybbs.com

Indeed. :) I havent't figured out yet how to have it in colour though. And I'm not sure what screen height to choose. I picked 40 characters, but I have problems in some menus. Maybe I'll try a different terminal program.

Wow, it has been so long ago but I still get that feeling of - hey I gotta hang up soon, otherwise the phone bill will explode. :D

Haha, yeah...I think the best settings are 80x24 or 80x25 for screen size, which is pretty much the default for PC telnet bbses nowadays.  Also, I highly recommend DCTelnet as a client.  It's on aminet.

Won't work on my rather stock A500. It doesn't even have ethernet, I connected with the help of a serial device server. ;)

Haha good to see you mro :)  Hey, do me a favor if you can get the word out there that daydream development will continue once I get back to the USA next week and I'll be back around.  IRC ports, telnet, ssh, anything useful, etc., are all blocked here.

No worries man, I'm home in a week.  To be honest the connectivity is so terrible here that it's pretty fruitless to mess with gateways and proxies.

Today, I booted my A1200 for the first time since the 90's.  When the monitor finally warmed up, I was looking at a black screen with familiar lime green, blue, red, and purple text - it was AmiExpress BBS.  This was the system we used to run our BBS.  What a blast from the past!

Oh yeah???  :)  What version?  Do you have a decent filebase on there, or have any of your bbs file archives?  I have a lot of ami/x stuff but not as much as I'd like.  Maybe you should throw it back online for a while!

v2.39 is the version number.  Yes, I have all of the original download files for Utilities Unlimited, mostly consisting of files for EMPLANT's Mac emulation.  I don't have any modems anymore.

Hello!

For the purpose of testing the Amiga serial port and the old modems, I am searching for some dialup BBS. Are there any left?
Title: Re: Any Decent Amiga BBS's
Post by: Duce on July 07, 2015, 05:46:39 PM
Was a few dialup PC based BBS's still kicking around a few months ago when I last checked.  See:

http://www.telnetbbsguide.com/dialbbs/dialbbs.htm

I've been running my Amiga BBS since '08 on a SAM 440.  Not many callers these days, to put it mildly, but it's fun nonetheless.  I've had an urge to throw a dial up line up just to see if I would get any callers, but I suspect I'd be sorely disappointed, heh.

I've thought about adding a dial up node, its all set up with modem, I just don't know if its worth the cost of the line!
Title: Re: Any Decent Amiga BBS's
Post by: Duce on July 08, 2015, 03:22:15 PM
As cool as it would be to have an actual dialup node, I doubt it'd get much use at all.

I suspect most BBS's with dial-up nodes get a fair number of "tire kickers", but the regular callers of said BBS's might try the dial-up node once or twice for the sake of nostalgia, then go back to the far quicker and far more reliable telnet nodes.

Most people I know don't even have land lines anymore, or if they do, it's solely to facilitate a *DSL connection like myself.  I've got 2 pairs of physical copper phone pairs coming in, in a bonded DSL set, but absolutely no dial tone or actual phone number allotted to it (aka Dark DSL).

I haven't seen a single dialup or Telnet in my area in years.

I have CNet 3.05 slowly being brought back up after being reinstalled from scratch. Telnet was a mo.....err difficult to get working. Haven't opened doors yet but do have H&S and Hacker ( the Marijuana Man version - not the aminet version). Slowly moving over another 30 or so pfiles from old board's backup. Got side tracked trying to get InformLoader working but it isn't playing nice yet.

Anyone know an outbound telnet pfile? Want to link a GameSrv server in as another door ( Auto login where I can direct link the doors from that would be even better)

Give CNet 5 a try, it's excellent and far more stable.  Last version of CNet I think I paid for was rev 3.x and I did manage to get ahold of the current developer and he shot me a copy of 5.x no charge, which is greatly improved and came with a very easy to use setup guide for telnet.  I was very impressed with the software and the support itself, considering the BBS age petered out nearly 20 years ago.

Holler if you have any interest in the latest version and I'll dig up the fellers contact info out of my old email bin - I am very happy with 5.x, anyways, and I'm currently using it despite being a paid user of DLG, E! (both of which are now free, btw, but I'm a paid user going back to the 90's, nonetheless), and Zeus.  I've found CNet 5.x rock solid, even on my SAM440ep under 4.1u6.

A very neglected blog I have dedicated to Amiga BBS'ing at the below URL if anyone is at all interested - would be more than happy to hear out of any other remaining Amiga sysops.

Commodork is a terrific book, highly recommended.

I also highly recommend the BBS Documentary film by Jason Scott of textfiles.com fame, it's a great blast from the past.  Can find it on YouTube at:

Hey Duce - How'd you contact CNet dev?
Title: Re: Any Decent Amiga BBS's
Post by: Duce on August 02, 2015, 04:20:23 AM
Have not been in touch with him for some time, but the last time we talked he emailed me from:

dan at stormsedge.com

URL is:  http://www.cnetbbs.net/

Minus the spaces and replace "at" with @, of course.  I don't want the poor fellow to get spammed to death from mailbots, heh.

Last time I spoke to him, I simply told him I was a paid customer for 3.x and I was looking for the latest version, and he was kind enough to send me 5.10h with a how to on setup and how to get a new keyfile off him, since I have no way to access my old original CNet disks.

He was a terrific help to me, anyways.  Good luck!

Excelsior is free now as well, and is terrific and very CNet like if you ever wanted to give that a poke.  I ran it for some time and it was absolutely bulletproof.  DLG is also now free (including source!) and on Aminet.

Good luck on reaching him.

Plenty of warez systems around, lol.

There are simply too many whiners and armchair lawyers trying to enforce copyright on principle for companies that have released the rights for their stuff anyways to be dropping telnet addresses on Amiga forums.

Well, I now have CNet 5.10b registered as of today. Did a scratch install instead of upgrade. Slowly getting things configured.

I'll post when I open the doors to public.

BTW - From Dan. CNet 5.11a update may be ready possibly in a few weeks and CNet 6.0 is in the works!

For what its worth, I will be trying to keep the line open on this CNet BBS...

Pass the word, the more people who populate it, the more than likely it will stick around. :)
