Title: Dreamcast
Post by: motrucker on May 12, 2012, 07:21:51 PM
I just landed another Sega Dreamcast, in like new shape. It came with an SD card reader and software to load prgs from the SD card.
I don't seem to able to access the device though. Anyone here used one of these?

Dunno if this would help. Not watched it as I am at work and youtube is banned.

Never seen this mod done.

Ya... did you use the Boot disc to access the SD reader?

I use Dreamshell to access my SD reader, a cheap looking effort which plugs into the serial port

I have the CD that has Dreamshell on it. Apparently it is just real picky about the SD card used. Several refused to work, but a Sandisk SD card works fine.
Thanks for the suggestions, one and all.

A new beta of Dreamshell is up btw! :)

Might be time to dust off my Dreamcast. I've always used a custom CD or the broadband adapter and ipload (or whatever it was called--it's been years!).

The SD Adapter works fine with home brew, emulators, many Beats of Rage Mods, and some   commercial games.  You do need to convert them to sdiso format or download them already converted.  Unfortunately the data transfer rate on the Dreamcast serial port is too slow for most commercial games to run properly in sdiso format, but its still a very cool add on.

But we would never, never load a copy of a commercial product from an SD card, especially when the Dreamcast will boot just about anything, and blank CDs are cheaper than SD cards gigabyte per gigabyte, reuse notwithstanding. ;-)

I run Quake 3 off SD. It's the only commercial game that gives me better load times from SD as opposed to CD.

Do you use a controller or keyboard/mouse for DOOM?
I just found several games I bought online, including DOOM and Unreal Tournament (one of my all time favorites).
This Dreamcast was a good find - I love flea markets!

QFT. Had lots of fun last year playing all the games I missed back in the days on my DC, and was surprised they all worked fine as copies. Such an amazing console, too bad it failed.

The best 2 Doom ports for the DC were nxDoom and later a port of ADoom. I used a controller with both.

Upgrading your CPU clock is a worth while venture too!

Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament both perform very well for me. Marvel vs Capcom does well with the audio ripped from it. Games like Fast Striker and Dux are  very fast loading , but unfortunately their is no CDDA music.

I have found several sites with loads of info for upgrading the DC. I am reading up on it all now. Just what I need - more projects!

I have a vga adapter for my DC. Gives really good quality visuals.
