Title: Lets Amiga chat!
Post by: CritAnime on May 12, 2012, 12:30:59 AM
Over the last few weeks there has been intense debate and mud slinging. personally I am sick of it a bit now and I think it's time we kicked back, let our hair down and just get some Amiga chat going.

So lets talk Amiga, lets talk Commodore. Hell if you into Atari lets throw that into the mix. Lets discuss what makes our computers of choice so good for us. Lets not bicker, lets not squabble. Lets have some FUN like the Amiga and other systems let us do!!!

Fun?  Fun?  I remember that word.  I used to use it a lot before I got married.  :D

I agree.
This is supposed to be a happy occasion.
Let's not bicker and argue about who killed who.....

All we really need is
To stay positive.
Any negativity is just detrimental to our
Retro hobby and community.
I think we all need to appreciate what we have.

Several new pieces of hardware have been released.
Unity is what we need to help build our
Community back to where it should be..
Keep a positive attitude and above all else
Show everyone else the respect they deserve.

See, you haven't reached that point yet where she comes up to you and says those dreaded words "Either that computer goes or I go".

It is bloody annoying to have to pause a game of Alien Breed Tower Assualt to help her pack a suitcase and then drive her to the bus station.

Didn't think Tower Assault had a pause function. I would have to finish my game first before all that....

To be fair she knew what she was getting herself in to. And I did say that she had to love me and my Commodore computers :)

I to say that Amigas are great fun as long as they're running OK, but my systems seem to be so patched now that keeping them running smoothly can't be a major pain in the arse.  My A4000 with its combination of Zorro and PCI cards as been known to throw a major wobbler at times when you install a new program or update a driver.  The best thing about an Amiga compared to Windows is a "backup" just means using DOPUS to copy one hard drive to another and "restore" is just doing it in reverse.

Minimigs are a joy to use.  SD cards full of ADF files = no read/write errors.  :)
Title: Re: Lets Amiga chat!
Post by: CritAnime on May 12, 2012, 01:19:24 AM
Yeah That is one of the good things about the Amiga HDD. Especially if you have a CF as a 4000 power config copies everything over in minuets. Also I know what you mean about SD cards. My HxC makes life with the old 600 a joy. No read issues and no need to clean the bloody thing :D

Just been looking on gumtree and found this:
http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/amiga-1200/101680738

1200 which has been modded and looks to be in good working order. Can't afford it myself as I have a bambino on the way. But I am sure someone in Miggy land would probably give it a good home.

I just moved into a new apartment and got my A1200 set up to discover that the AGA features aren't working.  I guess I'll have to send it into AmigaKit for a board-swap when I get the chance and funding to do so.

Oh man that sucks :( I have a 1200 that I hardly use. Can't decide what I want to do with it.

I have just found a accelerator for a 1200 again on gumtree.

I've got a spare A1200 in an Elbox tower.  My goal, whenever I get the time (so many projects, so little time) is to get it running with a ClassicWB hard drive installed and eBay it.  The only problem with Elbox towers is that they cost a lot to ship because of the weight.
Title: Re: Lets Amiga chat!
Post by: CritAnime on May 12, 2012, 01:36:36 AM
Never actually seen an Elbox up close. So don't know it's actual real life dimensions. I would imagine that they come with a good slab of metal on the bottom. I know a lot of old PC cases did.

I've got 3 of them.  2 with A1200 mobos and 1 for my A4000.  They're great bits of kit of you want to really expand your A1200 and essential of you want to add a Mediator.

I don't have time to use my MacMini "Amiga". Too busy with uni stuff at the moment. But i get 4 weeks off in about a months time so i will use it then. My mini needs a bit of maintainance like installing the Airport wireless card thingy and getting rid of that dreadful Apple startup sound.

Not sure what I want to do with the 1200. I have my 600 setup pretty sweet and use that for gaming. Never really tried any of the AGA games so the 1200 is a bit like the family silver. It only comes out for special occasions :D

If I were to mod it I would certainly tower it. Because if would want to mod the hell out of it. I seem to recall a 600 that someone had put into a desktop case.

Morph OS is something I would be curious to use if I still had my 4g mac mini. I do not envy you on maintaining the mini though. I had my old one open to install some new RAM. Such a tight space to work in.

The other day, me and a friend got some gaming in. Chaos Engine, Transplant and taking turns at Super Stardust
Title: Re: Lets Amiga chat!
Post by: CritAnime on May 12, 2012, 02:44:40 AM
Chaos Engine is great on the Amiga. I prefer it over the SNES version and the audio and visuals seem better on the Amiga. I was playing Turrican II the other day and that was the first game I ever played on the Amiga. The theme tune still sticks with me today and it instantly takes me back and puts a smile on my face :)

Wait you have never tried Morphos even when you owned one?

No. At that point I had dropped out of the Amiga scene and hardly ever used my Amiga. It wasn't till some time after I sold the Mac Mini I realized about Morph OS. :(

Oh OK. To make you feel better i have never tried AOS 4.x  ;)

Now there again is something I would love to try. However pricing of HW kind of pushes that out of my reach at the moment lol.

Which might be an excuse to pimp my 1200 out and try the OS4 classic.
Title: Re: Lets Amiga chat!
Post by: Kesa on May 12, 2012, 04:13:45 AM
I wouldn't waste my money on OS4.x for classic. I have heard it is rubbish. I have seen it on youtube and i fail to see the appeal over 3.x apart from the added eye candy, no tech support or updates, incompatibity issues and a massive reduction in speed. At least that is what i have heard - i think maybe from Franko? Not sure.

HI,

How can you insult the Amiga like that "MacMini "Amiga", why not call it like it really is a MacMini impersonating an Amiga.

I know how to get rid of that dreadful Apple startup sound, place your fake imperonating Macmini Amiga under a steam roller. Should never play that sound again.

Such a tight space to work in, reminds me of the person who built those things, very tight, in other words a tightwad taking your money. May he rest in hello operator.

Hi,

@CritAnime,

Don't waste your time, have a ppc card in my A1200 and am running OS 4.1, thinking of going back to OS 3.1/3.5/3.9 operating system, haven't found any use for OS 4.1 as of yet. Enjoy using my A4000 / 040/25mhz system more and it seems to run faster than a 250mhz ppc Amiga. Not only that but OS 4.1 crashes a lot, rather use MorphOS on a MacMini with an awful startup sound.
OK
I give credit where credit is due, OS 4.1 so far is the pits, a crashbox, run slow, at least on an Amiga 1200 with a Blizzard ppc card.

Have been looking at MacMini's but everytime I do, I throw up.

Yeah i agree that the Mac Mini is trying to impersonate an Amiga. Or maybe the other way around. I have a theory that the developers are all Apple loving zealots who secretly wish Amigas were Apples. They are trying to Applefy the Amiga community

Also if you want to honour the Amiga you could start by stop using that crappy emulation dosbox stuff and use your real Amigas.

Hi,

@Kesa,

Have my Amiga 4000 turned on every day, use it to play soliton, megaball, and Adoom. Just installed Crazy8's, Leading Lap and Space Taxi. Usually just use it for data basing with Pen Pal, don't know why but I lke Pen Pals data base program. Guess I am just weird.

Why do I use Amiga Foever, why because I can, besides don't really lke using the Amiga's that much, after all the old girls getting old. Want to save her for the future, but I found out the more you use her the better she works. Must be something about exercising her old silicon.

A lot of people will say Tower Assault is better, but I end up playing Alien Breed 2 a lot more. It's an amazing game in a lot of ways, once you get past the atrocious first level.

Just some quick pics of my little 600 miggy. The one where its powered up is an old one from just before I installed the HxC so there is still a working floppy drive in it.

Picture quality is a little crap because of my blackberry.

Yeah those are cool but i prefer the standard A3000. I like the desktop cases that CAN'T fit 5.25" devices. It seems ironic somehow...

I think the towers are sweet but they look ugly when you put in devices such as 5.25 drives that don't match the size and colour properly.

Are you agreeing or disagreeing? I think 5.25 drives are too big. I prefer the smaller 3.25. But that's just me.

Anyway i think the A3000 is interesting as it is a contradiction. It was meant to be a workstation aimed at professionals at the same time they left no room inside or outside for 5.25" expansions. Oh the irony...

Oh no I wasn't disagreeing with you. I have never seen the inside of the case. Only the outside. But as you say its odd they would design it as a workstation yet restrict it in the way they did.

yeah. no doubt. I had a 1200tower with g-rex and it was like that...

My current 1200/060 is no issues. The Indivision AGA MK2 really makes the system, although the DVI has one worked 100% on one monitor I have tried, but that will get better I'm sure. if it gets the graffiti support that will be sweet. I tried to run the graffiti software off aminet. does not seem to work.

I won't ever build up another classic though.

My Minimig 1.1 is totally reliable and that is the future... I only miss out on a few things that need 020 CPU instructions, but I can't wait for the 2.0 and 060 daughter-card. I know it will put my 1200 to shame.

I hope some day they make a daughter-card with PPC/060 combo. That would be interesting.

Hi,

@kesa,

All Amiga's can use the 5.25 floppy drive, they like all the other floppy disks could be set up external of the case, I believe the number of the external 5.25 disk drive was 1020. Used to have one, then one day I tore it apart to see if something would work, it didn't but I never put it back together again. Big Mistake.

@Kesa,

Actually the A3000 was designed to be a Unix work station, only trouble is Commodore screwed this up to somehow, they made the Commodore Unix to expensive. Therefore no one bought it. It was a big waste of money. So the best machine they ever made failed, it was to expensive for the Professionals to use, and way to expensive, with little innovation for the home types to use.

Are you sure you are not mistaking the A3000 for the A3000T? The tower was designed to be used by sun systems but the deal fell through. I believe it was called the A3500?

Also i'm not sure the A3000 was designed to be a UNIX workstation. It could accommodate UNIX but it wasn't designed just for it though. Commodore noticed that users were putting accelerator cards into their A2000's and other stuff to beef them up and they realized there was a market opening for a high performance Amiga that didn't need upgrading straight out of the box. That's where the A3000 came from. At least that's how i see it. I was a bit too young then to really know what happened.

*EDIT* The A3000 was not designed to use UNIX but the A3000ux was. Those are 2 different machines.

Decided to ressurect this Amiga chat thread. Dunno if people would be interested but you never know :)

Been playing with AMOS and Backbone after Cammy gave us the backbone tutorial. Takes me back to when we would bedroom code on the c64. Don't know why I skipped the Amiga in terms of coding. On the C64 a group of us at school would code text adventure games. They were crap but we loved doing it lol.

Also I have been getting into Perihelion again. However for the life in me I can't remember all the rune codes for the spells.

Thanks for the ressuruction :)

I am currently playing a round of chess in chessmaster 2000 on my 1200 while watching a few episodes of Andromeda :)
I feel that it's a good combination to get my mind off at nights since I am currently on my 10th day as a non smoker :) *holds thumbs*

Congrats about the stop smoking thing. As a healthcare professional I am obviously all for it ;)

Chessmaster 2000? Don't recall playing that one (checks lemonamiga). Ah yeah I did play is lol. i remember the guy from the title screen. It would beat me every time on anything other than easy.

Actually doesn anyone remember a demo for a game called Operation GII (http://www.lemonamiga.com/games/details.php?id=2975). i often wondered why this got canned as Obitus was a pretty cool game.

Thanks! Im doing my best :)

Chessmaster is quite hard but one of my favorite chess games, lemonamiga do not show the "3D" mode, that's how I play :)

I never had the coverdisk of Operation GII back then but I wish I had, looks exactly like the kind of game I would like to play right now :)

To bad it never was completed, I like Psygnosis, the code must be gone and buried ages ago :(

Yup more than likely. Half tempted to see if I can track it down somehow. Maybe someone who worked at psygnosis still has it stashed away.

More importantly my wife has issued an ultimatum. I want a new 1200 as I discovered recently the one I had stashed away doesn't work any more. I turned it on, smelled burning and discovered that the inside was a little toasty. However in order to do this my wife says I need to sell my 600.

OH NOES!!!!

Now this is a bit of a dilema. Because a) I don't want to sell it if i can get away with it and b) I have no clue how much my 600 is actually worth.

I am tempted to find out more about the game code also :)

Aww, a dilemma like that is not nice to be faced with :(
I am lucky enough to have a wife that let's me get whatever hardware I want as long as I can find space for it :D

She's not bad but I think because it's a computer she is having issues with it. Essentially all my computer stuff is confined to one area. Which is running out of space lol.

I am half tempted to see how much it's worth because a piped out 1200 sounds enchanting.

I know the feeling, I to have a small room for my stuff the rest is in my basement stored away so I have to pick what I want to use and the A1200 has one of the spots :)

Is the A600 stock? Where I live a stock A600 without yellowing go for 100-140£ :)

Well my Buck Rogers:Planet Zoom+++ game may still come out one day. I am always on the lookout for an A1000 hard drive or an A2000 motherboard and internal FDD drive so there is that.

It's just not possible to code up game engines that rely heavily on the copper for subtle depth cueing but use only 4 colours only via WinUAE and LCD HD monitors with no scanlines and square pixels (CRTs have round pixel definition with red/blue shift)....may look great on a real Amiga but would look pretty iffy on a high end 20" 1080p LCD so it just destroys your creative spirit (hence project is stalled).

I like the creative possibilities that Amiga can still be used to pass the time with, hell I even connected up Digiview to a 16 megapixel digital camera once to get the best possible Dynamic HAM/Hi-Res images out of the old girl :)

And today I converted some mini movies to HAM just to be amazed they weren't telling porkies about 25FPS in 1985 re: A1000 launch.

The bottom line is if you enjoy Amiga then you will find other people to have friendly chats with, I think the only reason there is a problem is the whole NG Amiga rubbish going on in the three camps. If you stick to JUST actual Commodore machines you will make many friends for sure.
