Just wondering if there was a way to turn off that dreadful Apple startup sound when i boot my Morphos Macmini. I read somewhere that you were supposed to turn it off on OSX before you install MOS? Is there a way i can turn it off from inside Morphos without having to reinstall Leopard? I'm not running a dual boot. Morphos only.
Cheers!

On power up do ⌘ Cmd+⌥ Option+O+F should go into the open firmware options screen. Try that. Other than that I know it's built into the open firmware and might be something you cant edit out.
-
If you have an Apple keyboard there is a 'mute' key in the top row you can push during startup (I'm not sure what the equivalent would be on a standard keyboard).
Another alternative, install a sound card (like a Soundblaster Live, opps - Mac Mini n/a) and disconnect the internal speaker.

Thanks! I will try it the next time i switch it on!

I have a BT Apple keyboard but the BT takes a while to become available when i switch it on. Too long to push the mute key in time. Also what happens if i forget? So i sit down to use my Amiga, push the power button, then *Apple sound*. My nostaglia is all gone. Just. Gone.
Is it possible to remove that crappy little speaker?

It's possible. But the mac minis are a bitch to get into. Try the open firmware first lol.

I noticed. I have the wireless express airport card but haven't yet put it in because i can't friggin get the thing open! It's been sitting there on my table for 6 months. Aparently i need a paint stripper tool and use it as a lever?

I never had any luck with the spackle/paint stripper whatever you call it tool opening those things. What worked best for me was to use a big ass meat cutting knife and shove it into the side and kind of pry it open. It's difficult if the machine has never been opened before. It gets easier after a few openings though, probably relaxes the plastic fingers that hold it together a bit.

Is much safer using the putty knife. You had to apply pressure without fear of break anything, and it snaps out. I did that when changing memory and was straight on.
-
The 2006 mini has a very similar case, and what I do is use a flathead screwdriver to start it at the back and then i pry at the little notches in the bottom of the case. I don't have putty knives at my apartment as I don't work with drywall or anything

Thank God I've got a Power mac.
Its bulky, but getting to the speaker is a snap.
And, YEAH, that start up tone does startle you.

It's an OS Booting sound, not a startup-sound and therefore it's under the control of the OS you are booting, you'd have to configure MOS TO TURN IT OFF.

There is no option in MorphOS to turn it off.
Install startup sound prefs panel (startupsound.prefpane linked by Jorkany) to OSX where you turn it off. Then you can erase OSX and startup sound is gone forever.

No, No, No!
The best way to open a Mac Mini case is to get some hard wire, preferably plastic coated and loop it through the ribs in the vent slots on the bottom of the case and then wrap the ends of the wire together so that you have a loop. I do this on all 4 side and then gently pull the loops and gradually work the case open.
Works great and no nastly putty knife marks on your case! :)

If you know how to turn it off using OS X, you should be able to boot from the Leopard CD and go from there without installing Mac OS.
Besides, why do you dislike the sound? You are using a Mac so you shouldn`t be ashamed if it sounds like one.

Try this? Source and applicable quote follows:

I know this thread has pretty much died out, but I found an answer on the ArchLinux Wiki at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBook --
1. Reboot with an OSX installation disc
2. Start the Terminal
3. Issue the command "# /usr/sbin/nvram SystemAudioVolume=%01"
I can confirm that this works on a late-2010 Macbook Air and Snow Leopard.

And from here:
http://forum.soft32.com/linux/rid-starting-bong-G4-mac-mini-ftopict309614.html
I use the command nvsetvol from the package powerpc-utils on my ibook.
"nvsetvol 0" will turn it off, but I like "nvsetvol 1".

Couldn't agree more, that sound is really aggravating
Thanks to all for the suggestions.
-
Buddy of mine opened his with a few .45 shots. Worked magically. (Not PPC, or I would've gone mad... he gave me his PPC unit a while back.)
-
its the most annoying sound any computer has ever made.
It makes me aggitated every time i have to fing hear it.
-
I actually like the sound, myself, but it is wayy too loud on my PowerMac G4 on startup. I'll dl the little tool. And I have a question; Why do people hate OS X? Its well updated (about every two years) it has amazing software support when compared to other UNIX/Linux derivatives, and its Aqua/Quartz is vastly better than window's current set up. I can't say its the best interface out there, but it is pretty nice.
-
I dont hate Mac OSx just not got time to use it. And it does suck on my old g4 mac mini (bought for morphos)
Also there is no version of Fruity Loops studio for Mac OS

@Kesa
On powerup, take 25 pound sludge hammer and strike Macmini as hard as you can where you think it will turn off speaker.
WORKS FOR ME!!
