Title: Amiga Infrared transmitter for serial or par?
Post by: Gulliver on May 01, 2012, 05:15:57 AM
Hi, I just wanted to know if there is some kind of infrared transmitter solution for Amigas that use the serial port. I have seen Infrarexx, but it uses the joyport.
Is there some serial, or even parallel IR transmitter device with some support driver/software?

Thanks

Its not IR, I have a bluetooth serial device that i use with my minimig 1.1. I use it to transfer stuff to and from my notebook computer. If you get on, make sure it supports hardware handshaking.

with 2 amigas you could probably use 2 of those devices and parnet. i believe it also has sernet for serial.

http://aminet.net/package/comm/net/parnet

or maybe this

http://aminet.net/package/comm/net/sernet24

I have never used it, but its from the well-known Matt Dillon (Dragonfly BSD, not the actor)  :)

Its possible I could parnet my Minimig to a UAE amiga.

hope that helps...

What exactly is your project that requires IR transmission specifically ?

You can build a simple remote serial link if you want using IR if your goal is to have a wireless transparent serial port or something like that..  ie using MAX232 chip with some simple IR/other Components too..  you can even add in a cheap premade bluetooth module and do it via that.. but really need to know your full purpose.

This might be a fun little item.

I keep meaning to add Bluetooth serial internally on my TRS-80 Model 100...

All the resources for this project are still available online, just google around a bit and you'll find them.

Thank you for your answers.

I am not looking to establish a network connection. All I want is to drive infrared appliances from my DraCo (which I am currently modding/building up), I am talking specifically about stand alone media players.

The problem is that DraCos dont have joyports, Airlink and Infrarexx would have been the perfect choice if they could work from other port other than the joystick one.

Any clue to accomplish this thru a serial or parallel port is apreciated :)

Cool device, now how do I use it with AmigaOS? :)

I wonder if it could be done via a parallel joyport adapter. Normally these adaptors add 2 more ports for 4 player gaming. I don't know if they would work for driving Airlink, maybe.

On Aminet theres only IR software that mentions joyport solutions.

http://aminet.net/search?query=infrared+

You will have to check the software to see if you can use a different port like the parallel or serial port.  if it does support parallel port then you can play around with a parallel joyport adapter if they work..  if that fails then probably best to make a custom made solution using the parallel por serial port  since the circuitry is pretty easy just understanding the IR codes and presenting them would be the challenge done via software..

This is pretty cool for adding Bluetooth to TTL circuitry or rs232 driver..

Very cheap package,  I modded my custom made car computer OBD-1 serial adapter to stream serial data over bluetooth :)

You'll probably need a max232 to make it work with amiga serial port but wow. but still, cheap, this BT thing i bought was $80. also i'm betting it does not support hardware CTS/RTS and DTR/DSR handshaking making it no good for a lot of things.

edit:

wait it does look like it at least has CTS/RTS. not sure if things like AmigaForever also need DTR/DSR

What's wrong with XON/XOFF?

It only works for ASCII data, not binary, so there's your problem :)

Hmm, not really. The problem is that you can't use the XON and XOFF codes for binary data. This is easy to solve (use upper seven bits only, convert base 256 to base 254, variable length encoding), that's why I asked what's wrong with it.
