Title: The OS4 Notebook
Post by: jorkany on April 19, 2012, 09:10:36 PM
...or netbook, rebadged LimePC, whatever you want to call it.

Any news? I know it's only been six months since it was announced, but had a spare minute so thought I'd ask.

Naghhh, for something that is due out this summer....

things sure have been quiet about it.

Vapor anyone?!

An affordable OS 4 machine is certainly too good to be true.

I don't care if this is a rebadged LimePC whatsit. At least it will have some perceptible lineage to the "Amiga concept". My money waits for one.

I'm still tentatively interested, assuming they ever actually get around to doing it...

They won't....

A low-cost portable OS4 compatible computer has too much chance (however slight) of being an actual success for them to ever risk releasing it.

I have a theory

its like in the Shawshank Redemption when the old guy Brooks (who had lived in the prison system for a very long time) was actually up for parole and tried to do something to sabotage it because he was afraid of living back in society.

What goes on in their heads? What are you talking about.. too many hw and software projects not enough manpower. Very simple. They are not robots on ly human

Sounds feasible.

Ha, that's the most logical explanation I've heard yet.

LimePC no longer allow you to navigate to the PPC netbooks (or any PPC computers) on their website.

I did find this though........ http://www.limepc.com/z9.shtml

Interesting but no doubt out of production I guess.....so probably being worked on by Hyperion right now :)

I wouldn't assume it's out of production if they've removed older models from their site but not that one. (And it's not the only PPC machine on their site, there's also this thing. (http://www.limepc.com/x1.shtml)) Though there's so little information on production or ordering that it's hard to say one way or the other. S'pose someone could email them and ask...

Edit: Okay, I emailed them. Dunno if/when I'll get a response, though.

Beating a dead horse makes a very satisfying thud and doesn't harm a living thing!

@commodorejohn that little box would be interesting to have AOS4.x running on, although a bit in the low end.

I actually don't think the NoteBook is vapour, some times things just takes time.

Hobby market = You get it when it's done!
As jorkany well knew before he even asked the question.

No news, but let say its similar state like X1000 in 2010: they say OS4 can run to it, but no drivers.

As we see X1000 drivers are slowly peaking out (as well as SAM 460 audio driver) and must say that drivers seems to be slowest in progress of all OS4 components.

In my head, netbook is not much valued before OS 4.2 and Timberwolf are done because it really needs to use hardware acceleration on netbook because pure software might crawl.

At least in my mind once OS 4.2 and Timberwolf are done, we can expect netbook, sometime late this year. Assume that next batch of fully usable X1000 with no added cards and with OS 4.2 would be promoted by then.

Timeberwolf is almost done (beta 3) and we can`t say boys aren`t doing anything. Is just not up to our wish speed.

An other thing I think is desperately needed is javaVM.

@ vox

Probably spot on with that assessment.

@ yssing

I bumped your other thread because I'de like to see some discussion on that myself.

Software rendered gfx is only small part of it. You have to decode images, parse html and css, execute javascript, convert text to local charset, calculate page layout  i.e. hell lot of small tasks you have to do on CPU only.

Does Timberwolf coordinate with TenFourFox at all? They know their stuff over there; I've run modern TenFourFox versions usably on a 500MHz G3, and quite satisfactorily on a 1GHz G4.

What if it's a zombie horse? Not one of those voodoo zombies either but a plague zombie.

Ah, but that's an undead horse. Completely different.
