Title: Jack 3.1 now available for all Amiga-like operating systems
Post by: djrikki on April 15, 2012, 11:02:14 PM
Jack 3.1 is now available for immediate download for all Amiga-like operating systems.  Non-AmigaOS 4  users should read the notes outlined below.

For the time-being Jack can only be downloaded from OS4Depot.net (http://www.os4depot.net) and contains separate installation scripts for all supported systems.

SO WHAT'S NEW?

* Comprehensive Download Manager in the App-Store
* Added support for AROS, Classic and MorphOS computers into the Community Statistics panel and elsewhere
* App-Store Donation Database: Download applications and then donate directly to the developer (SHOW YOUR SUPPORT!)
* Improved general caching within the AppStore and increased archive name recognition database
* Platform-indepency and removal of all (most) third-party tools and applications including Curl/Wget
* From now on all URLs are called via the OpenURL suite
* Watermarks fixed in single-image mode
* All fonts are now anti-aliased
* Many more numerous bug fixes and optimisations
* For full list of changes and bug fixes, read the .readme or the documentation included

AROS:                            (status: Release Candidate)

* Installation Problem: Will extract to the current directory and not to the chosen destination drawer, AROS gurus must fix this for me.
* Optical media is not picked up in the filemanager
* Mouse pointers have been temporarily disabled

Classic Amiga OS:        (status: BETA/untested)

* Completely untested, assuming it even loads some features maybe broken or missing.
* Likely installation problem as AROS

MorphOS:                      (status: BETA/Untested)

* Completely untested, assuming it even loads some features maybe broken or missing.  I do intend to get my hands on a MorphOS machine to bring up to the same level as enjoyed by AmigaOS4 users.

IN ALL CASES please subscribe to the Jack Beta Mailing List, send all your bug reports, feedback, suggestions etc... especially non-AmigaOS4 users.

jack_beta@freelists.org (http://mailto:jack_beta@freelists.org?subject=subscribe) - ensure you write the word 'subscribe' (without quotes) in the subject of your email.

Thank you, I hope you continue to enjoy Jack for... everyone! :-)

I downloaded and installed Jack 3.1 into my MorphOS system and when I double clicked the install to install Jack nothing happens. I am unable to install it into MorphOS system at all. Thanks in advance.

I think getting this program is SUPERB awesome because it will be like shopping online, it will have the latest up to date software news and downloads and purchases...it is like an online MorphOS store on my screen...but I cannot get it even installed. Thanks.

Great, at last I know for sure it doesn't work under MorphOS out of the box.  Supposed to be getting access to a MorphOS machine soon so I can do some real testing.

In the meantime feel free to join the mailing list mention at post #1 so I can begin sending out a debug version so I can at least determine how far it is actually getting.

Can I be your software tester? You wanted a morphOs machine, since I cannot let you borrow it since we are not in the same country, can I be your guinea pig instead? Simply send me the software anytime any day, I will test it and I will report you with all the bugs and issues and what caused this problem. You take the report, fix it, send me again and email and repeat...if there is a software where you can have access to my MorphOS desktop through your desktop like logmein or pcanywhere or anything like that, I will give you full access to my morphOS 24/7 and develop right on my machine...

Sadly there is no software like that :(

Terrific program, thanks much!

AmigaClassicsRule:  Should be some VNC type software available for MOS.  If OS4 has it, I'd suspect MOS does as well.  I use AmiVNC a ton on my SAM 440.

djrikki  ANY TIME you say YES I will setup the machine TODAY for you and give you access to the machine to develop directly into it. It will be on 24/7 non-stop and I will remove the keyboard and mouse from it so no one can do any changes into the machine while you are developing it...ones it is setup I will also remove it from the monitor so it will be like a cloud machine.

What do you say djrikki ? Do you agree? If you say yes I will set it today for you when I come back home from work and give you instructions to access it.

Sure things sound like a great idea.

If I can VNC into it that would be unreal as I could get a lot of work done that way.

In the meantime I am just going to upload a debug version of the executable somewhere so you can replace it over the top.

Off-topic if anyone wants to see Sash performing in the UK in a couple of months time be sure to buy a ticket from the main site I own. :laugh1:

DONE! Today OFFICIALLY I will go back home download the program, set it up and send you the information to it..ones you have access to it and confirm there is no problem with it or you have no issue with it...it will be on 24/7 non-stop and you will have access to my email address if anything happens wrong or something and it is your virtual cloud system. I have always wanted to know what I can use this system for...it would BE THE MOST USEFUL machine if DEVELOPERS world WIDE who wanted to develop for MorphOS but do not have the hardware to develop for it...they can use my system.

But my intention since it is going to be used for public use by developers...only one developer at a time can access it. Ones Djrikki is done using the machine, and he takes his source code from the HD to his local HD and backup his work and delete his work from this machine it is open for the next developer.

@djrikki

There's something to add to Jack right there. Make it so that every Jack user can optionally "donate" their computer time to a project.

I have a mac with Morphos I never use. (It's in storage right now, in another state, won't be able to get to it for a few months). If Jack had an option to donate the machine's time to a project, or to a general "up for grabs" project pool I'd install Jack and leave the machine plugged in and forget about it. Of course for the pool idea you'd need some kind of screening to prevent anti-social people from abusing the opportunity.

I thought that was for OS3.x too.

Like the MorphOS version, the OS3 included in the archive on OS4Depot is also untested at present.  However, as it works under AROS and they share a lot in common it shouldn't be too much hard work to get it running.   Clearly, you'll need lots of memory and CPU to draw upon.

I've downloaded Jack and gave it a try.

First thing to fix in MorphOS installation is a path to IconX in install icon from SYS:c/IconX to MOSSYS:c/Iconx, that's why installation didn't work.

But there is something wrong with installer as it doesn't copy stuff and doesn't create a new drawer.

I've copied files from $jack_destination to a proper drawer and then copied MorphOS executable to that drawer as well. After that I got a popup asking for a language and then it fails as it was unable to open transparent windows. ATM im using a gfx card with no 3d support so I presume that's the reason. Will do some more testing tommorow with 3d supported card and let you know.

But at the start u need to change path to iconx and have a look at installer where is the mistake.

Regards

Fixed icon, I guess I am going to have to address all calls normally to SYS: to this MOSSYS: path instead.

@Installation

Yes, I had similar problems with the AROS scripts.  Third-party stuff copied correctly, but I wasn't able to address the environment variable destination problem.

Yes, as all main core files are kept in MOSSYS: and you should not touch it at all. If you want to add some stuff (for example libs) you have to put them in SYS: If MorphOS will fail looking for some lib in MOSSYS:Libs it will give a try at SYS:Libs.

So what's the solution with the installer then?

1. Change the icon like you said

2. Change all references in the installation script (open in a text editor) from SYS: to MOSSYS:

3. Amongst other stuff Jack has a Preferences panel that simply opens stuff in SYS:Prefs/, I've changed this in the source code to MOSSYS: when running under MorphOS.  No doubt MorphOS has different preferences applications to AmigaOS anyhow- but the initial goal is to get it to run in the first place. ;-)

The best solution imo is to download MorphOS iso and you can take a look what and where is based.

Yup cannot beat having a real system to develop on.  Have already been offered help with that, see page 1.

djrikki, I will be home from work at maximum 8:00 PM, right now it s 3:13 PM with me. See me in IRC chat (I login using wookiechat) at the channel #amigaworld as a user MorphOSUser (it may be truncated to MorphOSUs for some reason). When you see me there at 8:00 PM my time I will talk to you live in IRC getting things setup and making sure you have access to the hardware by end of today. When everything is up and ready, I will not use the system anymore or touch it until you have finished your project. The system will be available Monday through Sunday 24 hour seven.

@all

Jack 3.1.1 now available in OS4Depot upload queue, addresses a few problems reported from users in addition to other general bug fixes.

* MorphOS: Runs in debug mode, please copypasta the result here if you manage to reach it in this release
* MorphOS: Fixes to installation icon.
* MorphOS: References to SYS: are now MOSSYS:

* Began adding connection detection around downloading of data across the
internet; due to this being a quick fix release this has yet to be implemented
into the App-Store.  More to do here.
* Donation database broken due to error in decryption algorithm.
* Fixed error in opening file manager from the shell using arguments.
* File Manager: Fixed downloading of URLs that contained uppercase.
* App-Store: Fixed error with Recent Uploads and Bundles both appearing in Red
under AmigaOS4; seems to have cleared up double buffering error present in 3.1.
* Commodity Window:  Added temporary warning requester to JackTunes in case the
user presses this icon by mistake.
