Title: PAL Genlock for Amiga VIC-Slim
Post by: greymatters on April 14, 2012, 11:29:33 PM
Friends, i wish to buy Commodore Amiga VIC-Slim from http://www.commodoreusa.net/CUSA_VICSlim.aspx

I  want to use it for showing bottom ads and scroll on my local cable tv  channel, few years back i used Amiga 1200 with PAL genlock to do this.

Before buying i need your guidence...

1) Can i use RGB PAL Genlock on VIC-Slim? as there are no RGB port.
2) Where to buy PAL Genlock (like Hama 292) to use with VIC-Slim?
3) Can i run Scala MM 400(old Amiga 1200 ver.) on pre installed Commodore OS Vision on VIC-Slim or Commodore 64?

We need to use Amiga for its super smooth scroll on PAL TV with powerful Scala MM 400

Thanks in advance for your time and support.

It is a Linux OS, x86 compatible PC in a case that is branded Commodore.  Old Amiga specific HW will not work with it, and any running of either C-64 or Amiga programs will require an emulator package (VICE, Amiga Forever, UAE variants, etc) and the respective ROM's and OS disks.

I highly doubt something like a Genlock would work on it via emulation even if it had the proper ports.  It's a commodity component PC, and to be fair to C-USA, they do state that.

Scala may work via an emulator, but you can try that on any mainstream machine you may already have with a proper emulator before you buy the VIC.

Um, the VIC-Slim is an X86 based keyboard computer.
I don't know how you'd Genlock a PC's video output with a PAL TV signal.
Hasn't Germany upgraded to an HD stsndard beyond standard PAL?

Scala does offer software for newer systems, but you're not running MM 400 on a PC (especially under Linux).

Thanks Duce & Iggy for your replies..

I used Amiga1200 for 7-8years but was out of touch from 2005.

Any new Genlock is in the market to super graphics over PAL Video?

Hi Gerymatters and welcome to Amiga.org.

If you don't mind me asking, what made you think that the VIC-Slim was an Amiga (which it isn't) or that it was anything other than a standard PC running Linux?

The reason I ask is that we've already been saying for months how confusing and underhanded C-USA's advertising is (They call Linux Mint "COS" or "CommodoreOS") and they're just rebadging existing PCs, slapping on a sticker and doubling or trippling (or even quadrupling) the price.  Did someone from C-USA or one of their boards tell you that these products would suit your needs, or did you just find their (lack of) product description as confusing and vague as we do?

One the plus side, I hope this rekindles your interest in the Classic Amiga.  :)

Well, a quick web search turns up devices like this one from an Austrailian company.

or this 9which appears similar)
