Title: Amithlon supported hardware list?
Post by: Duce on April 08, 2012, 07:38:31 PM
The PC I was using for Amithlon seems to have given up the ghost, and to be honest was a little dated spec wise, so I am looking at throwing together a new dedicated Amithlon PC.  I think I still have an older Dell Socket 478 P4 2.8 GHz mobo around here somewhere, hopefully Amithlon will support the onboard SATA on said MB.

I'm sure it has been asked 1000 times, and I'm near positive I have seem a fairly detailed list of supported hardware for Amithlon, but for the life of me I can't seem to be able to find it atm.

Anyone?

Can't remember what NIC's are supported but an AGP Geforce MX200/400 or other Nvidia cards from that era should suffice.

Digi, beat me to it.

That "dell" mobo is probably a Dimension 3000 series, so it should work.

Yep, that's the list I recall seeing!

Thanks much for the heads up, guys.

I have had success on any NetBurst derived or before PC. I have used up to a Radeon 7xxx with success, but I did need Wazp3D which does make a difference when running games like Quake.

The OLD list

http://web.onetel.net.uk/~garycvl/amithlon/hardware.htm

The NEW list

http://www.garycvl.f2s.com/amithlon.html

The REAL list (ie Kernel 4)

http://www.hd-zone.com/amithlon/

The HELPFUL files

http://www.box.com/shared/hisnu6o4lc

The NEW KERNEL

http://sourceforge.net/projects/amithlon/

Hope they help. Many modern machines can run Amithlon that even before Kernel4 were not supposed to. I have it running on my Atom board (D945GCLF2) with original kernel and with other kernels.

I last tried it on an AMD x64 machine w/ kernel4, it did boot but had issues with sound and video being slow VESA

I used to run it on a Dimension 3000 with NVIDIA 5600 and I was VERY happy! :)

Ahh cool, seems I'm in better shape than I thought - hopefully it doesn't puke on the CPU I have, otherwise the partslist I cobbled together seems fairly compatible.

A8N SLI - AMD X2 4200+ dual core
2 GB RAM
500 GB SATA HD, SATA and IDE optical drives
and my choice of a nVidia 5200, 5900 or a ATI 9200 to throw into it, PCI.

Wish me luck, and thanks for the help guys!

Good luck Duce! Be sure to try it by just inserting the CD, I've gotten a few to work that way

Probably no secret to some people that Im a big amithlon fan/user, but with a little persistance it's possible to get amithlon working well on reasonably modern gear. The problem i guess with stuff from the last few years is that pci slots are limited, and to my knowledge its not yet possible to run any pci express cards in anything but vesa modes. I tried a pcx 5300, which is effectively a gf5200 on a pci express interface, and while the agp and pci versions of a 5200 will work, the pcx 5300 didnt.
Seeing as how Im using a core2duo based system, I have no agp slots, so Im using a matrox g550 pci card (along with a pci sb audigy and a pci 3com nic). Unfortunately sata is more hit than miss from my experiences, you might get lucky, but pata (or a pci scsi card + scsi hdd) is much more likely.

Feel free to ask if you want any more details on supported gear, but a basic list:

gfx: martrox g200/400/500/550 (full 2d acceleration),
     nvidia: tnt/tnt2/gf1/gf2/gf2mx/gf3/gf4/gf4 mx/gf5200/5500/5600/some 5700's/5800/59x0 (full acceleration),
     from ati: rage up until radeon9700/9800 I believe has partial 2d  acceleration as well.
Having said that though there's an open pci radeon driver being worked on at the moment that has full hardware acceleration (not just fb) which looks very cool :)

snd: some ac97 codes, some intel hd codecs (I think), sb audigy, sblive

nic: 3com, rtl8029, rtl8039, others through linux side drivers but Ive never used them

For cpus pretty much anything from a p2, p3, p4, core2 and inbetween for intel, and probably from k6-2 through to pheom2's for amd, although Ive got no experience with amithlon on amd stuff beyond an athlon64. I say it a fair bit on a few different sites it seems, but Im a big fan of socket775 stuff for x86 based "amiga" machines. They, by mostly luck ended up a good balance between modern enough to have some nice grunt, but old enough to have some decent support.
Having said that though if you was mostly just interested in getting the machine youve mentioned up and running I cant imagine you'll have too many problems. There's a patch for p4's for fpu emulation though, just make sure you apply it (it's part of the amithlonupdates).

Have Asus P5KPL-CM motherboard I need to try in Amithlon. is 775 based and I have a 3ghz Xenon Dual Core CPU for it. Am assuming that 1 stick of 1gb ram is the way to go for Amithlon kernel. Only 2 PCI slots though. But if Kernel 4 (Or Gary Kernel) picks up on Intel G31 + Intel ICH7 then everything good to go as far as basic hardware. I had a little PCI version 5200 video card but it died on me. Maybe I'll get another or something better so long as 2d/3d supported. And I do have a SB Live! audio card that could be used although I am not sure it would provide any advantage over motherboard VIA VT1708B 8 -Channel High-Definition Audio CODEC.

I just tried an ASUS A7N8X-E DeluxE Board with AMD 2500XP CPU, 2 GB RAM, Nvidia  5700FX (Agp Video), SATA Port Disabled, Onboard Audio Disabled.

It Doesn't work although a similar Asus A7N8X-X board is on the Supported List.
Any Ideas?

Tried with the Standard Boot from CD and also Kernel 204NF2.

@Rodomoc

I actually used to use a similar board with amithlon, so its pretty likely you'll have some success with it. Two pci slots could potentially make things trickier, but if you can get either sound or networking supported through linux side drivers, or find a suitable pci riser card you'll be good to go.

@shaf
Unfortunately Amithlon only really supports up to 1.5gig of RAM, anything beyond that will stop it working. More realistically 1gig, but there are rare occasions where a person can get 1.25 or 1.5 supported. It's definately worth using kernel3.x  or 4.x though too, although an athlonxp is old enough that you'll probably get away with 2.x and earlier kernels.

@thread
To clarify things, at the moment amithlon has no 3d hardware acceleration. There is wazp3d, but for amithlon it's only software rendered, which while looking pretty, is varying degrees of slower (depending on amount of eye candy enabled). In the future this may change, as Ratte has been working on an openpci driver for radeon cards (up to semi modern cards) that has full2d acceleration (already shown working, a few videos are on youtube), and I believe he's also planning on adding 3d support as well, which would be awesome :) I dont have any "insider info" on this by the way, just what he's said, and what Ive asked on public forums like eab.

@fishy

Thanks for the help, I'll pull out a 1GB RAM stick and retry to see if I can get any response.

I usually stick to 1GB or less, because I'm a freaking cheapskate. I've gotten it to run on a Pentium 2, all the way to a Pentium 4, but I never have had an AMD to try it with (I've had  supply issues, I get all my PCs from a parts bin at a computer consultant shop.

OK Status Update, Amithlon Works on the Following Hardware:
ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe Motherboard
AMD 2500XP CPU
1 GB RAM in Slot A1
nVidia GeForce FX5700 (AGP)

It will not boot from CD but setting a Small Partition and using the Kernel 204nf2 works, I'm going to attempt to use Kernel4 and see if I also get good results.

Fishy was correct as soon as I removed the 2nd 1GB RAM Stick I was able to boot.

It would appear that you can add the Dell Dimension 2400 series to the list. I just installed Amithlon on a 2400 last night and it works like a wet dream!

Added GeForce 5200, Sound Blaster 128, and Kernal 4 for the note.

EDIT: I meant 2400 not 2700 series.

Looks like you can add 9500gt pci-e to the list! :) I'm using it on an EMachine T6528 with a muti-boot set up.

MicroXP with AmiKit

Amithlon
