Several months back Amiga.org had continuous slowdown issues so we upgraded to a robust high bandwidth hosting plan to give all members a smooth as silk responsive site. Now we are running a special on limited number of lifetime premium memberships to help share in the hosting charges.
It's a great deal for members because you get a lifetime membership to the site with all that brings for only a one time fee of $30. Normally one year memberships are $20. So please enjoy the site and if you can become a lifetime member and no longer worry about renewals and help keep Amiga.org on net.
To become a lifetime member just click "Feed the kitty" on the lower right. Then pick custom amount and input $30. You're membership will then be upgraded to lifetime status with 24 hours or less. Or you can just send $30 to Paypal address store@discreetfx.com with subject Lifetime Member. Thanks again for the help.

I would much rather see amiga.org pick up some good hosting provider instead. For 49 €/month you could get a dedicated server: i7-2600, 16GB RAM, 6TB HDD storage with 10TB monthly upstream traffic (downstream is unlimited).
No need to beg from the members.
-
The provider we are using was recommended by Wayne and is working well.

How much is it per month if I may ask?
I find this relevant considering the members are being asked to help funding it.

If you looked into a better hosting deal I would look at it. But as others have mentioned if we knew the hosting cost, especially if we are putting money forward for that.

That doesn't mean other solutions won't be better and cheaper as Piru suggested. There are tons of cheap dedicated servers providers. What is more, with strong dedicated server you can also for example sell hosting, email account (for example pampers.amiga.org, pampers@amiga.org). There is couple of possibilities than asking for donations (but that's the easiest way...)
-
aah back at this one again. The Infamous hosting costs. I think the truth is they are not paying very much a month, and avoided answering last time this discussion came up. If they are paying as much as it would seem (from the constant asking the users for money), they should look at other hosting options as this site is on a shared server and shouldn't be costing much at all.
-
The Kitty goal of 40 USD isn't all that high. If that covers costs then it doesn't sound like an expensive hoster to me.
-
it's pricey for a "shared" host. It's not a lot of money in general though no. According to the "donations" page the last donation was in April 2010 Not sure I trust the information given!
If it isn't a lot of money, then why are the users being constantly asked to pay for the hosting ? I host projects. I pay for it myself - so I don't see why I need to help everyone else with their hosting costs.
Sure have a donations button, but it's like an ask for money operation every couple of months here.
-
Every serious website uses a dedicated server. Is it warranted here? (This post is not sarcasm.)
-
So if I contribute $30 right now, I'm a lifetime member? (I'm not a member right now)
-
@orb85750
Never mind EC2 and similar services.
@thread
I was always wary of the pre-transition kitty, but I'm also wary of claims of super cheap offshore (from the perspective of the site operators) hosting.
-
amiga.org is currently hosted here btw - http://www.hostgator.com (which hosts their stuff at theplanet.com - now softlayer.com) - on a shared machine with other sites. They share an ip address with other sites too - such as shebayer.com, bobcesca.com and babystrollerzone.com amongst others. This is already in the realm of what I would call "super cheap" hosting.
-

Of course you are already a member (just like everyone else has been since they joined, and will be till they leave).
You don't seem to understand the point: Normal yearly membership fee is $20 and if you pay the $30 you don't have to worry about renewals!
:crazy: :lol:

Done it! You just got $30 in the kitty.... :biglaugh:

@Middleman
Thanx, your donation not only goes towards hosting but also helps Amiga.org grow and expand. For example we take out regular paid Ads in Amiga Future and other places. Also, there is no way to figure out what kind of price to put on our time investment sourcing new interesting Amiga news, approving new members and keeping the site running. Even if some members don't want to take advantage of the great value of a Limited Time $30 Lifetime Membership they can donate something. Every little bitty bit helps.
:)
-
I'll jump in on this as well. Here kitty kitty.... :)
-
Please don't be shy, donate and help Amiga.org expand.
-
I fed the kitty. :)
-
I am allergic to cats. I ****ing hate them. If I were a dictator I'd command all cats to be terminated. Wake me up when I can donate for doggies.
-
Thanks much CritAnime, Middleman & anachronicus. Your pledge of support is most appreciated and will help Amiga.org grow and grow. All three of you are now Lifetime Premium Members of this site. What about everyone else please?
-
Done and done.
Well worth the $30!
Thank you for this opportunity.

Its worth it when its keeping the site going. I may have only been active on this site for a year but I have been visiting and reading articles for a lot longer.

Thanks, and you're welcome too! :) I've certainly been to Amiga.org and popped in to visit quite a few times over the years and it's been one of my more favourite computer sites. I guess this is my way of saying thanks to the community and doing my bit to keep it going...
But there is something I wish to say and it is...now that a modern Amiga is coming back via the efforts of CUSA I want others to recognize that they are the real beesknees, and I hope Amiga.org remains impartial to their development. Actually I want to emphasize that, many of the fears allayed about CUSA are unfounded. Having followed them for over almost a year as an independent IT 'observer' of 30 years if you will, I feel that they are capable and indeed up to the task of reviving the brand. Barry isn't as bad as people think and Leo is someone who has his head and heart in the right place to lead Commodore to the next age. As the lead developer of Commodore OS, Leo has demonstrated that despite their company size they are very determined and efficient with how they handle development. Not even companies like Dell have approached in creating their own OS this way. In this light their efforts should be commended I feel...
That said the development of Amiga on the x86 platform is an ongoing process, just like the PPC versions. We never how it will turn out because there are so many options for how the system could turn out. But with the support of the community perhaps we will get our ideal dream machine soon...
-
I don't think you have been understanding what you have been observing from what you have written in your second paragraph. Or just had your eyes shut, like most current "Amiga Users". (Actually I think even most Amiga users are not fooled by the CUSA nonsense).
-
also:
"But with the support of the community perhaps we will get our ideal dream machine soon..."
if commodore OS is your dream, just buy an off the shelf PC and run Ubuntu/Mint and give it a C= theme with lots of C= logos etc.

@Middleman
If Barry feels misunderstood he is welcome to do an interview with Amiga.org anytime to tell his side of the story. We are an impartial news based Amiga site so welcome his explanation. He would get the questions in advance by e-mail and can answer them in his leisure. It might help the Amiga community understand him better. Maybe you could propose this to him Middleman?
-
$30.00 big ones from my kitty to your kitty! Thanks Amiga.org! :D
-
@gizmodo350
Thanks a bunch, it would be nice to see Barry or Leo pony up $30 as well. If they are really interested in this community they should show it. After all they have gotten a lot of free advertising on Amiga.org for years.
-
Jeez I'm in...
-
My pleasure Transition... will the title under our names say "Lifetime Member" instead of "Premium Member"? That would be cool. :razz:

I finally get your business model:
1. open lots of CUSA threads
2. keep bumping open CUSA threads
3. put pressure on CUSA to pay for "all the free advertising"
You're a genius.

Nope, this could not be further from the truth. We know CUSA will never advertise on Amiga.org or even chip in a meager $30 for a Lifetime Membership. They have not put even $1 into the Amiga community from the beginning. We don't know why this is but it's sad.
-
Why is it all about money to you ? (even measuring what someone has contributed by how much $). The "Amiga Community" would be better off without everyone trying to make a quick buck.

Well, I was about to donate, but after reading this I'm going to wait until I'm certain this place doesn't become "AmigaCUSA.org".
-
@Darrin
Don't worry, that won't be happening, they have their own site after all.

That doesn't mean that they don't want this one. ;)
-
@Darrin
Don't worry, CUSA can't afford to buy this site. It's out of their price range.

Sure, I will pass it on... :)

Lifetime Membership offer ends today. Last chance to take advantage of it.
-
If every current regular user took advantage of this offer what would you resort to in the future to generate funds from the userbase when they were needed?
-
Why I would close it down ASAP and blame RMK305. Seriously since less than 1% of Amiga.org membership has taken advantage of this offer I don't think your doomsday fear of everyone buying one will come to pass. Amiga.org will be here serving up the needs of the community no matter what. Come back in a 1000 years and we will still be here.
