Title: AmigaKit Product Idea: Cap-Packs.
Post by: amiga4ever on March 22, 2012, 08:48:30 PM
Hi,

Not sure where to put this thread, so I just plonk it here. If it's in the wrong place, feel free to relocate.

Anyway, I've shopped at AmigaKit a fare few times in the past and I think they're great for purchasing Amiga items and I recently thought of a great product AK might consider stocking.

Code named "Cap-Packs", the product basically consists of all the capacitors needed to replace the entire set of caps in an Amiga and packs would be available for each model (A600, A1200, A400, etc). Additionally, each pack is tailored - by AmigaKit - for the customer's board revision and could contain simple diagrammatic instructions on locating the old caps on their board.

So a typical order would be: i need an AmigaKit Cap-Pack for my A1200, board rev. B.

What do you guys think? Personally I have 5 Amigas (1200s and 600s, variety of board revs) for which I'd like to replace the caps for. The pain for me is not soldering but sourcing the caps and making sure I get the correct caps for each board rev.

I'm sure AmigaKit know of places to source caps and this product could be yet another great product in the AmigaKit catalogue. Just throwing the idea out there. AmigaKit might consider it a worthwhile venture...

As they do the replacement capacitor service at the moment I see no reason why they wouldn't already sell you just the capacitors if you called them up. Surprised they haven't listed them already as Cosmos over on Amibay seems to be selling them pretty well.

Good idea, I'd get one for my A2000HD.

There is already a "cap-pak" service that is both expeditious and quality.

PM Cosmos either here or on amibay.  cheap, quick, accurate.  A no brainer, really.

Oh, *those* kind of caps. From the title I though perhaps some one was suggesting:

Would have gone well with the stickers, and perhaps some juice boxes.

I emailed (via their contact form) amigakit recently asking for some information about sim replacement and rtc repair (was going to send in an amiga 4000 motherboard). I heard nothing back unfortunately. I have used them recently for purchases and they have been quick, so if they read this thread - Did I ask the wrong questions or was my message overlooked ?

@amiga4ever

Many thanks for the idea- we have supplied Cap kits before in the past- we will look at bringing them back.

@buzz

Not sure where your email went - please resend to technical [at] amigakit.com

Thank you.

I got my A4000 caps replaced by Hikey over on Amibay. Great service and the board is as good as new. See my A4000 rebuild thread for some pictures.

If it is too much trouble to make different packs for every single revision model of every Amiga model, then you could consider making generic packs for each Amiga model that include all the capacitors for any of the motherboard revision models, plus instruction sheets for each separate revision model number for that particular Amiga model.  Including a few extra capacitors that are needed on say a 1B motherboard, but not on the d4 motherboard, would not make much difference in the price of the pack, but would make it a lot easier to sell the packs, as you would only need one pack for each Amiga model (A1000, A2000, A500, A600, A3000, A4000, CDTV, CD32, A3000T & A4000T).  That would be a lot easier than making a different pack for every different motherboard revision on every model.

Still a great idea, which ever way you decide to do it.
