Title: Cbm 8032
Post by: Darrin on March 04, 2012, 06:06:17 AM
Right, I've just won what appears to be a working Commodore 8032 on eBay!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/270922985798?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Unfortunately I missed out on the CBM 8050 Dual Disk Drive by the same seller which finished 20 seconds after the computer did!  Why on Earth would someone have 2 related items finish at the same time?  I wasn't going to bid on the floppy unless I secured the computer and once I did that I had 20 seconds to try and get a winning bid in.  Oh well...

Anyway, does anybody know if C64 floppy drives will work with this PET?  I understand that the cables are different, but I believe the 8050 would work with a VIC20/C64/C128 with an adapter.

Not really.  1541/1571 5.25" floppy drives used low-density disks, whereas the 8050 formatted a disk to 500 KB single-sided.

FWIW, you can get a PETdisk or petSD and use the SD card storage solution.

Thanks for the info Robert.  I'll keep an eye out for other CBM drives.

Would the HxC not work in this?

BTW congrats on winning the PET. I love the style of the system and the chunky keyboard looks awesome.

Sorry to hear you missed the disk drive. I have a CBM8032 + 8050 combo and it's awesome! The disk drive is just... massive

The 8050 uses IEEE-488 interface. It seems that making an adapter to use 1541 with a PET (http://vintagemashups.net/2010/12/commodore-1541-ieee-488-conversion/) is possible, but it looks rather... complicated! PETdisk would be much easier way to go.

A word of warning; my 8032 had a small tubular mains intereference suppression filter installed under the mains transformer. It's connected to the mains before the mains switch so it's live all the time the power cable is connected. This component was rather tired and went up with a loud bang just after a couple of minutes of testing the computer. It might be worth removing, just in case (and replaced to maintain minimum interference to and from the computer).

There are rather few games to the 80-column display CBMs but there is an app that allows to change the display to 40-column and most programs for that screen size will run properly.

Anyway, great machine, take good care of it!

That ROCKS!

I never had a chance to use any Commodore computer before the Commodore 64/Vic-20.   The C64 was my first computer.

I have also respected the early Commodore models.

I hope you have a blast with your new toy!  :-)

Cheers!

Thanks for the great advice guys.

The first ever computer I used was a PET 4000 series and I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on this one.

I guess I'll keep an eye out on eBay for a PET floppy drive.  Fingers crossed that one will show up.

Does it have a C64 type tape connector?

All Commodore tape decks (except 1531 for the C16/+4) use the same connector and work on all machines.

Great.  Thank you.  I thought I remembered a "standard" Commodore tape deck being connected to that 40xx model
