Title: need help, amiga died
Post by: rednova on March 01, 2012, 12:51:30 AM
Dear friends:

Sad news, my amiga 1200 died :(
I found an old disk with a business label saying 'AM News'
I never used this before, found it in an old box.
I loaded the AMnews icon from disk, got a red guru error msg
then the screen went black.
I turned off the power, and when i Turned power back,
the geen led light lit, but the HD did not boot anymore.
Everytime I turn on the power, the green light lits
but the screen remains black and HD does not boot.
Any ideas to help me pls ?

dear friends:

Good news !!!
I have an extra accelerator that is in working condition, and I can
order a new HD online.
Would it be possible if I changed the HD and accelerator the
amiga will run again ?
And shall I change the HD first, then the accelerator ?
Please help !!!

Boot off a workbench, first and check the drive, to see if the contents of your drive were placed in another folder. I have seen something similar to that before, back in my Amiga days on my friend's 500.

Hold down both mouse buttons and turn on the computer and you should get a bootup options menu.  If you don't, something else is wrong.  From that menu you can temporarily disable the hard drive boot and click continue and you should (IIRC) get the insert workbench disk animation.

Sounds like the software merely did something to your hard drive to make it non-bootable, or hang (maybe corrupted the boot sector).

Don't go buying new hardware when it probably is a fairly easy fix.

At worst you'll have to re-format your hard drive and re-install Workbench and everything from scratch (but mostly likely you'll be able to salvage or repair the filesystem, as others have said, with software).

I don't think it's possible for the mystery disk to have physically damaged the hardware.

Strip all hardware (accel boards etc).  remove and reinsert the kickroms.
see if you can get the kick rom screen to show up at least.

Dear Friends:

Is it possible a bad disk can hurt the accelerator board?
because if that is not possible, it means all I need is to fix the
Hard Disk.
thank you !!!

Hi

Pressing both C= keys + ctrl does not work.
I tried booting off a workbench floppy disk, it will not
work either.

Try removing the accelerator and see what happens

@dougal

Wouldn't it be wiser to first swap the HD?
then I make sure there are no viruses, and if that does
not work, then I can change the accelerator.
Is it possible if I swap accelerator first, and HD is bad,
it might affect accelerator ?

From what you've explained, there is something on that disk that messed up your hard drive.

Before you go pulling everything out, open up your Amiga and disconnect your Hard Drive cable.  This is the easiest thing to check first compared to removing chips and those dang accelerator boards that are a @#*& to install/remove...

As for the early startup menu, I don't know if the CTRL-A-A keyboard method will work instead of the mouse buttons.  Try starting it up again with BOTH mouse buttons pressed down BEFORE you power up.

The hardest card to remove is the DKB 1240!!! DAMN that is a :griping::griping::griping::griping: to remove and install!! I would rather open the Amiga 1200 desktop all up and do changes there then remove that :furious: card. The Blizzard series are much easier to remove and install for some reason.

Hi:

I tried pressing both mouse buttons, still it does not work :(
Does it not make a difference which one part I swap first ?
the accelerator or HD ?
