Title: The problem with cables
Post by: Kesa on February 26, 2012, 08:39:50 AM
These cables running through my computer setup are driving me wankers!

First i have the cables that hook up my laptop to AC power. Then external HD, monitor, trackball, speakers, headphones and laptop cooler. Then i have my macmini with the same amount of cable cruff sitting on top my laptop. Then i have my PS3 next to it and then my A500, etc. It gets worse when i want to move my laptop to a different part of the house! I'm sick of tripping over stuff

I'm counting 2 1-4 AC plug adapters and 2 extension cords and will now set to buy a third 1-4 plug because i have yet again run out of AC sockets. I know that a lot of people here have messy setups so taking this into account i would call my tangled ball of cords and plugs conservative. But i was wondering, what does everyone else's setup look like?

Does anyone have any hints and ideas about how to clean up my cords? Is there a system i could use to make things cleaner?

Also i think it would be funny to see photos of other peoples messy rigs. I wonder who has the messiest? :)

Cable ties do help a lot.
First, you shorten the cables to the required length so they don't entangle too much. Second, when adding cables make sure that they're not running criss-cross and around each other. Third, tie the cabling for each device to a neat bundle. (Spiral ties are neat but a pain to undo.)

I think you mean "driving you bonkers".  Wanking is masturbating, so unless you have "the horn" for cables, I don't think you've been "spanking your monkey" over them.  Or at least I hope you haven't.

Thanks! But not really a fan of cable ties though. Too hard to take off. But i may try rubber bands instead.

Edit: I just saw some velcro ties that may be useful...

Nope. The term wankers is decidedly cockney (despite the fact i am originally from St Albans and not LDN) :D

I think you're just trying to cover up the real reason for your "messy computer" and we're not talking egg white or wallpaper paste here.  :p

I use white velcro wrap.  Have a whole roll of it.  But tying cables is all I use it for.  Not that other stuff you get up to Kesa.  You can also staple gun it to the underside of your table/desk.  'Tis good.

Staple it to the desk? Wouldn't that hurt? Nah, not my style...

Shouldn't hurt.  Should be easy for you to get the staple prongs to go either side of it.
;)
