Nice setup for $40au.
I'm guessing they are fully licensed?

I doubt it at that price.  It bothers me to see people selling stuff like this, with apparently no thought about stealing money out of the pockets of companies like Colanto, and I will bet that there is no donation to the author of AmiKit either.

No one really cares if people steal from Amiga Inc., as 99.99% of everyone here hates them, but Colanto and AmiKit try to provide something of value to this community.

Edit:  First post to A.org from my First Contact X1000 system.  I like it!

David, I'm not sure this bothers me as much as it seems to bother you.

I do find it amusing that this low end P4 crap probably runs 3.9 better then a "real" Amiga.

Yeah, I saw these a whle ago and started a thread about it too:

Bit of a scumbag in my opinion. Not only selling a pirated Amiga OS + kickstart, but also a copied WinXP, then does something any schmuck can do and tries to offload his old crappy computers loaded wiith pirated software onto amiga users.

Im going to report him so hopefully he'll vanish soon.

Now if he took a good small form factor PC and did it all with legal software, a GNU/Linux install instead of XP, paying for OS 3.9, the roms and WHDLoad to round it off. Then we might actually like the guy.

Sure, I agree. The end result is interesting enough (albeit not uncommon these days) and not something Id begrudge a person for doing, but the execution irks me. Not only is it illegal, but it reeks of both minimal effort and cashing in on amiga fans. It's a bit sad how often amiga people get taken for a ride, even by people from within the fold.

The fact that he's done it more than once could land him in pretty serious trouble too if it gets back to the right (wrong?) channels. Microsoft dont take too kindly to this sort of thing and fines of $20000 arent uncommon (I know a person who was stupid enough to get caught, got fined, then did it again. Cost himself $27,000 to make a few dollars).

Ultimately my biggest qualm with this sort of thing is making money from other peoples work without a right/license to do so. Im sure these very same people wouldnt be happy to work their asses off only to have their work put money in other peoples pockets while they themselves go without.

How much is he actually making?  $40?  Is the hardware alone not worth that?  These compaq PC's would have come with XP licenses, so MS won't and probably can't do squat about it.  That leaves Amikit and AmigaOS 3.9 and the ROMS.  Amikit as I understand is free.  Which brings us to AmigaOS 3.9 and the ROMS and Cloanto.  I'll leave that to others, as TBH there's I've forgotten after all the twists and turns as to who has a license, whether they licensor owned the right to license these to Cloanto, and whether Cloanto has the sole rights, and finally whether anyone will enforce any rights they claim to have.

I guess it comes down to whether or not they come with either the physical media with key, or a sticker with a license key attached to the machine. I used to fix computers for cash convertors (huge 2nd hand store franchise here in Aus.) and that was the criteria that needed to be met or they wouldnt buy a pc. They were/are open to buying machines with Linux (or other "free" OSes), but surprisingly not once did they encounter one while I was there.

AmigaOS + kickstart ROM files are of course another kettle of fish again.

To each his own and whatnot I guess, but personally as Ive gotten older the idea of selling pirated software has really started to bother me.
