Hello, yesterday I was trying some of my old floppy disks. Workbench 3.1 disk worked fine but this is quite new since only bought it around 2 or 3 years ago. I then tried Delux Paint (came with the A500+, so much older, from 1993 I guess) and this did not load up and gave me a read error. I then inserted Workbench 3.1 disk again and I got a read error as well!! I then noticed the shield on the floppy drive was not fitted properly, therefore I squeezed it and inserted Workbench 3.1 disk again; it loaded without any problem (still heard some alarming squeaking noises however). I inserted Delux Paint and this loaded successfully as well (!!??). I still have problems loading the actual program but this is giving an error on a different disk sector.
My question is; how could the shield on the floppy drive be somehow affecting the way the floppy drive is reading the disks? Has anyone had any similar experience?

What if I remove the shield? can that do any damage?

Remove it and copy the disk :)
