Title: Legal Amiga Software
Post by: SilverZguru on February 05, 2012, 05:17:03 PM
Hi all!

Is this site legal --> http://www.server2-amiga-island.de/html/amiga-games_a.html  According to this site: http://www.tweakguides.com/Amiga_5.html , amiga-island is legal.

If that site is not legal, is there any other good LEGAL Amiga sites than Back2Roots?

Thanks -Eemil

Nope, illegal. They invoke the abandonware thing in their 'legal statement' enclosed in the ZIPs containing the ADFs.

Okay, okay it's illegal..:( It was just a dream that such a good site would be legal

Then, is Great Giana Sisters, Bubble Bobble or Xenon 2 Megablast downloadable legally??? One more is The Turrican series, but I think that those are not downloadable legally.:(

Thanks -Eemil

Hilarious how a community noted for its high level of piracy when these titles were new is worried about the issue of ownership two decades later.

While I understand the argument from a strict legal standing, it still seems pointless.

But Iggy! If everyone downloaded abandonware disk images, how would the people who make money re-selling used games at ridiculous prices stay in business!?

That sort of pokes a huge hole in the argument concerning "illegal" software sales, doesn't it.

Ami Sector One (http://www.exotica.org.uk/mirrors/ami_sector_one/) is legit, as is Dream 17 (http://www.dream17.info/) for Team 17's stuff.

Thanks from the links Matt_H!

Strange that Bubble Bobble cannot be downloaded legally, but Arkanoid from Taito can! Also I thought that Lemmings was made by Team 17, but I can't found the download link from dream 17.

Keep these links going :)

Heck, the cheering for WHDload (which is amazing) while complaining about downloading ADF's.

Given WHDLoad circumvents copy protection, it is most likely illegal in several parts of the world, the US included.

But if you pirate WHDload, look out!
The hypocrisy squad will come out in force.

IT'S TOO SAD THAT XENON 2 IS NOT FREEEE!!!!! WHYY!!!!:furious:
Xenon 3 is legally free, but what's wrong Bitmap Brothers??? That's good that Lotus 2 is free, but still I need to get Xenon 2, Giana sisters and Bubble Bobble to my collection... (And maybe Turrican 2 and 3, because of good music :hammer: ). And nobody doesn't sell those games in my country! :(

99% of all the software can't be bought anymore (2nd hand is just as bad as piracy, of course), so why even worry about it? Just try and find out if the software you want can still be bought somewhere properly. If not, copy it, otherwise there will be no way to get it.

You're maybe right. Nintendo made Giana Sister's illegal, but I think it was commercial software. I am not sure, but anyways, could it be legal to download Giana Sisters from illegal site? There is Wikipedia thread about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Giana_Sisters

Thanks -Eemil

Without "classic Amiga" software piracy, all of the applications and games that have been made throughout the 80's and 90's will eventually be lost due to corrupted floppy disks or cd's.  Even worse, people just throw all this "old junk" away if they have no interest for it.
So for me, I see it as a necessity in preserving the Amiga and it's software for future generations and even for historical reasons.
If for example in 100 years time, there's an Amiga computer collection in a computer museum then how can anyone understand what the machine truly is without software?  The software tells the story.  A computer is an ornament if not for software.
