Saw an ad from a guy selling a bunch of Amiga and Commodore stuff. Ad says will not sell separately and wants $3000 for it. I doubt that'll ever happen so I write expressing interest in a couple of items if he decides to sell. He responds that if he doesn't sell it as a lot he'll destroy it. A bit extreme no? Very strange.
-
Sounds like Hans Campbell from somewhere in Oregon.
-
Guy's local to me, so cannot be Hans.
-
What exactly is he selling in order to justify $3000?
-
If the guy is insisting on not making any money from his possessions, more power to him I suppose.
-
I'm getting tired of these sellers threatening to destroy hardware unless collectors pay through the nose for it. What a spoiled brat.
-
Hear hear. I can understand when I'm giving stuff away just for the shipping and I can't get a bite, I have to send it to the dump (it kills me to do it, but I can't store stuff forever.) But if people actually wanted bits and pieces of what I've had I'm certainly not looking a gift horse in the mouth.
But then there's these tw@ts who extort various communities -- I see it with a lot of "retro" stuff, not just Amiga. They know what they haven't isn't worth the money they want, but they think they can wring it out of a bunch of poor sods who don't want to see the stuff destroyed. It is out-right damnedable extortion.
People like that need a swift kick in the genitals. Or a few -- they're free, after all.
-
Your right in your view that this becoming a trend across the whole retro scene. The amount of times I see items marked up and classed as rare just so the seller can get away with wanting more money. I saw amiga stuff where people were threatening to dump it for no reaon. Same with snes. Nes C64 ect.
-
I see the same thing with retro pinball machines. The older big case designs not the new Stern ones. The machines that are pre 1990 that are in good condition are rare and easily fetch $5000+. You see people letting them rot in sheds at the same time demand thousands for them. It makes me sick :pissed:
-
I've heard from a South African friend (recently emigrated) that in Capetown intersection hawkers try to sell kittens to stopped motorists, if they don't buy the seller will strangle the kitten in front of them.
It seems the darkness of human nature is the same no matter where you go.
Best to ignore the idiot and he/she will go away.

It's a couple of A500s, four A2000, A1200, a case and mainboard from A3000 and a few assorted Commodore 64 stuff and Vic-20. Included are software and magazines. Worth maybe $1000-1500 tops depending on the configuration of the Amigas which is not specified. The seller's asking $3000 which he'll never get from any sane person, MAYBE if he split it but even then it'd be tough. Might as well just set it on fire and not bother with the ads.
-
Hello, I am that guy's realtor.
I am selling his house for $3,000,000.00 USD (that is 3 million $)
I am not going to tell you how the house comes equipped because I can't be bothered.
It isn't very big nor very fancy. It isn't even technically a "house" as it is just a double-wide trailer. I have only have 1 MIL on me, would you consider taking that?
If it hasn't sold for 3 MIL by the end of the week then I will just destroy the whole thing.
-
I have to admit I don't understand the tactic. There's plenty of auctions I don't bid on, I always assumed if it didn't sell then it was going to the trash - so what's the difference?

I agree.
He has some nice stuff, but unless those A2000s are kitted out with some major CPU cards, flicker fixers, RTG cards, etc then they're not going to get more than a couple of hundred each.
Perhaps he wants $1000 for the Amiga stuff and $2000 for that "rare" VIC-20?

LOL. That about sums it up. :)

EM's! wedgeheads! :) I'm building my own pin from scratch, finding good plywood that is not full of voids is hard. Its crazy that some people let such great machines rot, especially how pre adams family, most machines had small production runs :/
are you going to the papa pinburgh 2012? I'm in as a contestant this year.. should be fun!
at least old big box miggys came in steel cases but you have people leaving batteries in and putting them up for years :(

We had a discussion thread on this topic going before, and someone there posted a GREAT response to give to sellers who threaten to destroy goods unless they are paid a certain amount:
"I'm willing to offer you $200 for the Amiga computers. If you refuse to accept this offer the MONEY WILL BE DESTROYED!"
...of course, you insert whatever money amount you are willing to spend. Hopefully reading an insane statement like this will make them realise how idiotic they are being.
Otherwise it's just hilarious!
In my own experience, I had a guy who beat me to the punch on the local Freecycle list - he got an Amiga 500 and peripherals for free from a generous person. He took them just to just see what they were (he didn't know anything about the Amiga). He got bored with them a few days later (probably when he realised they wouldn't run Windows) and he offered to sell me the parts (which we BOTH knew he had just gotten for FREE) or he would fire them in the trash. He refused to pass them on for free - when I was probably the only true Amiga user in my smallish town. Now, you can say that he was within his rights, but in my opinion that's being a Class A schmuck.
-
Isn't it ironic, the very people who own the same hardware these idiots threaten to destroy could ultimately benefit from it being destroyed, financially at least. The more rare it gets being the more it's worth right? Yet we are the very ones offended by it. I hate to see anything wasted that can be salvaged to be honest, even if it's something I have no personal interest in. The Earth has only so many resources to waste before the human race makes itself extinct.

That's sickening. I'd kill the savage on the spot.

OMG! The Addams Family is the best game ever! *Begins to reminisce* all those $2 coins i spent trying to open up the entire house but never could...
There is a non-working Addams Family machine at my local takeaway shop I'm thinking about pinching... ;)

Did you ask if he was negotiable at all and take steps to help educate as to the items not having a "market value" of $3000? Did you ask just why they will be destroyed if not sold - his motivation or lack of might explain it? (I am serious with my questions with no sarcasm intended - as things might not seem as crazy as first thought with some perspective).

He'll loose his access to most FC lists for that behavior. Too bad you can't otherwise publicly shame the fekker... you know, with a severe beating.

I dropped an entire summer's worth of lawn-moving money into Pin-Bot. I'd love to get my hands on one of those machines.

I own my house and I own my collection. It fills the house. And already I am thinking about what to do when I retire... And I also am gifting the house to someone through my will who I know does not want the kit. And so.. I am thinking in a few years time... say 5 years of doing much the same. I need the house gone and as I retire I cant be having the stuff around me anymore...When I die the person who takes over the house will send it down the dump... They have told me as much. Circumstances of life may prevail over any issues regarding defunct computers. At times other things matter more. A bit cruel.. But true. Selling a whole mass of stuff takes alot of time and energy and some folk just wont want to bother.
I know this is true cus I have collected like rooms full of stuff for free from people who just can't be bothered any more. Some people though don't care cus they just see it as junk.... And even when you say you will collect for free you often don't take it all. This happened to a guy I collected a double garage full of stuff from who was emigrating to Australia. He was really struggling getting rid of everything. The tip is a mighty attractive idea specially when all you need is a skip.
So don't be too ready to judge.

Yeah that's not the point Scuzzb. Making a threat to destroy it if it doesn't sell for the price he/she wants with out a description of the goods is the work of scum. Trying to use the threat of distruction to sell the goods doubley so.

Its up to the seller and if he wants to get rid of his old junk in one hit then whats the issue. So what if he tells the guy nosing around to put up or shut up. The offer was for the whole heap so how is that wrong. He doesn't have to prove anything. I think its called .. 'take it or leave it'. And he's probably done with 'booters and bayers' trying to make money out of him.

If it was take it or leave it I don't think anyone would have a problem. In this case it was "take it or I'll destroy it".
Very different.

This is not a case of "take it or I'll destroy it". Nobody would have a problem with that.
This is a case of "Give me a huge pile of money or I'll destroy it."
I wonder how many houses that guy has burned down?
I wonder how many cars that guy has intentionally driven into a lake?
What does he do when he can't get double the going price for gold jewelry? How does one destroy Gold?

Problem is, they're not going away. They're simply multiplying. Time for mandated castration and sterilization!
-
Hmm the mentality of some people on places like ebay must be astounding.
"Oh this retro computing lark looks like it could make us some quick monies. Lets run out to the local car boot sale and see if we can nab us a bargain. If it doesn't sell we will just destroy it! Maybe try and sell the remains of as spare parts."
I blame shows like Bargain Hunt.

You could always intercept it on its way to the bin.
