Title: Unarc OS 3.9
Post by: Snoozy on January 23, 2012, 07:51:37 PM
Hmm,

Something seems to be wrong with my unarc tool in Tools drawer on wb OS 3.9

When i double click an lha file to unarc it tells me:

Cannot open "resource.library", version 44. Unable to run "Unarc"

Grrr, i need unarc to work to install MUI 3.8 (which doesn't unpack properly on a pc with winrar)

I tried downloading dropzone but that doesn't seem to work (even after inserting the relevant file in prefs etc)

So any ideas why my unarc is messing me around?

Probably screwed 3.9 installation. Read Greg Donner's FAQs about 3.9.

I don't think its a screwed installation as everything else works fine.

Missing .gadget files, or incorrectly installed 680x0.libraries perhaps? Linky (http://www.gregdonner.org/os39faq/installtips.html#20)

Snoopdos might help you track down any failed attempts to access a particular gadget if that is the case.

Also, don't suppose you've recently installed Photogenics 2 by any chance? Linky (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=16284), especially Post 26 (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showpost.php?p=189945&postcount=26)

It's very likely that some of your files in SYS:Classes have been accidentally deleted or replaced with older versions (badly written installer scripts are usually to blame - they don't check versions before overwriting).

You can pull them off the 3.9 CD (or Boing Bag?) to recover.

I think you're both right , as i was previously installing a lot of web browsing files like amitcp etc.

Anyway i thought about doing the bb1 update but will i need the os 3.9 cd?

There will be 2 problems in that case - one i don't have a cd rom for my 1200, and secondly i bought the 6gb hd from evil-bay with os 3.9 pre-installed.

I see i don't have a file called "classes" in my system, this is bad news

Aweb resp. ClassAct is usually the culprit.

Yes, you need the CD to install a boingbag. Or at least all files from the CD.

Actually you are not allowed to run OS 3.9 if you don't own the CD.

It is a directory not a file and I am sure you have it, otherwise you wouldn't even be able to display a background picture (wbpattern) or open picture files in multiview.

Hi thomas,

thanks for the advice, funny you should mention ClassAct as i was just reading about it.

Does this mean i should delete ClassAct? (i have been trying to use Aweb so maybe this has upset things) Do i actually need ClassAct for anything? And why would it be interfering with unarc?

ClassAct was later reneamed to Reaction and if you install ClassAct you actually destroy your Reaction installation

OK so i have managed to borrow a copy of the OS 3.9 cd

and i am trying to get my current OS3.9 back to being more stable.

At the moment i am unable to copy files on wb, ie drag and drop, i am unable to rename files and i am unable to unarchive files.

Also when wb loads up its says:

Cannot open "resource library" version 44. Unable to run amidock

(similar message to when i try to unarchive an lha file, except it says unable to run unarc)

So i copy the cd3.9 wb onto my cf pcmcia (i don't have a cd-rom)

Which files should i be looking to replace/repair?

I can't perform a re-installation of OS3.9 as i would lose 3gb of data on my hd!

Advice and guidance would be appreciated..

(whdload is still working fine and stable)

Yes you can. AmigaOS doesn't purge your hard drive when you reinstall but do a backup to be safe (especially of your startup-sequence and user-startup files).

But you shouldn't need to reinstall. SYS:Classes is a directory. The files in it have been overwritten with older, incompatible versions. Copy the originals from the equivalent directory on the CD. I think the BoingBags updated them further, so run those installations to be on the safe side (there are ways to do it manually, but the installer is easier).

hi matt,

i replaced sys:classes files with those from the os3.9 cd, but the problem still persists.

I am wondering if it is safe to replace my 68040 file in libs?

Did you check if sys:classes/gadgets has all the gadgets that do belong there - I was missing some after my first install and got that error.

I'd suggest to reinstall BB1+BB2 and you'll be fine imho :)
Saw a similar incident yesterday in Amibay, but the fellow Amigan didn't have the CD of OS3.9 to be able to install BB1+BB2 so I sent him the extracted files which when he installed... everything worked like a charm!

I carried out a bb1 and bb2 manual update (copy and replace via dopus) with pcmcia cf, after help from mfilos and system stability has returned and unarc is back to working :)

One thing i don't understand is the probs i have installing mui 3.8 which gives me a guru failure 10% of the way into the install.

I would like to install mui but do i need to find a more recent version than 3.8? Is it clashing with OS 3.9 and bb1+bb2?

3.8 is the latest indeed mate.
Seems like the archive of MUI is either corrupt or the extraction wasn't done correctly.
I'd suggest to extract the MUI archive using LHA and not the UnArc that exists in 3.9. just to be sure :)
