Hi
Not sure if anyone remembers me on here? my Amiga has sat collecting dust the past few year and well i was wondering if OS4.1 is any good for classics?
What are the benefits? just hoping someone could give me the run down?
Thanks

Yes.

Depends what you want to do with your machine, if it's just booting up to play some Cannon Fodder, then no.
you will also need a PPC accelerator card to use OS4, do you have one? If not, they're rare and pricey on ebay.

hello Gav
every PPC equipped amiga user should try it imho. It worth a try even if nobody but you will decide if itis useful or not.
From your signature i see you have a good pimped classic. (even if SCSI is not supported on AmigaOS 4.x). You could then setup a multiboot enviroment with 3.9 and 4.x as well.
Is up to you to decide.
Good luck! :-)

I think your answer is right here.

The OS it's self is very nice, it runs smooth even in a classic enviroment and you get access to a decent web browser (OWB) although in reality it's still pretty slow getting online in a classic enviroment.
Have a quick look at a little Video I made when OS4.1 Classic was first released:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7o6Wm5Ed6Gg
The problem is when it comes to games/applications for OS4.1 they are all coded and aimed at the more powerful AmigaOne/Sam440 so you end up with a lot of stuff that runs too slow in a classic enviroment, you can't really even enjoy the new RunInUAE setups as UAE emulation is too slow on the Classics.
Here's an example of how the games run a little low:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtHcU-PNrOw
If you really want to start using OS4.1 proper then I would suggest an AmigaOne or Sam440/460, I have an AmigaOne and haven't booted OS4.1 Classic propertly since (well except to show off to friends)
Take a look at my OS4.1 Vids taken on my AmigaOne:
http://www.youtube.com/user/fitzsteve?feature=mhee
So to conclude, OS4.1 Classic is very pretty and has some great features (love the Radeon Hardware Rendering in the OS) and works very well as a basic OS, just I feel the classic hardware is just a little too slow to get the most out of it.
All the best,
Steve.

Well, you could say that OS4.1 Classic is completely pointless, as so much software for OS4 is written for higher spec machines. You could also say that you don't use your Amiga much any more so it's waste of time.
However, we're all a bit bonkers for using such old hardware, I think (he says, while trying to get Windows installed on his A1500/Goldengate that's been misbehaving), so I say:
DO iT! :)
Worst that can happen is you don't like it, in which case you sell it on for not much less than you paid for it.
Personally I own 4.1 on my NextGen systems, and 4.0 on my Classic, but as soon as I get money, it's getting 4.1.
-
For what else should you use that PPC card then? Just for the sometimes used PPC datatype or render module of whatever (through warp-up/powerup)? If I would have such a setup I would have AmigaOS4.1 and MorphOS running with it... :-)

Well I have OS3.9 fully pimped out with AfA_OS, WarpOS and WarpDT.
I also have HSMathLibs (registered) so it's a very slick running OS3.9 setup with OS4.1 style icons (kens Icons) but of course you can use Masons Icons too :)
It's great as you can still use all the classic software like WHDLoad and then you can run PPC/Warp3D apps like Quake I/II/Wipeout 2097/BlitzQuake/ShogoMad/HereticII/etc
A lot of these don't even work on OS4.1 or have glitches due to the Radeon Warp3D driver.
I also play about with WookieChat, basic online browsing and Emulators such as ShapeShifter which runs MacOS 7.6.1 like a charm.
I have two superb classic setups, CSPPC (233mhz) with CyberVisionPPC running OS3.9/AfA_OS/CGX4 and dual booting with a simple OS3.9 setup/Picasso96 with Voodoo 3 which is better for some of the Warp3D/PPC games.
I also have the A1200T with Mediator 1200SX and that also has a Voodoo 3 but again dual booting similar setups. Thats the machine I run OS4.1 Classic on, when I do that I swap out the Voodoo for a Radeon 9250 and have the OS booting off a SATA PCI card and SATA HDD, ESS Solo Audio and Realtec NIC. This one has the Blizzard PPC upgraded by Stachu100 to 330mhz PPC and latest mask 060 at 66mhz (Will also run at 72mhz but I don't like abusing it lol)
I have lots of project pages over at EAB/Amibay if anyone wants to take a look I'm happy to share some links
All the best,
Steve.

i had the opportunity to use OS4.1 on an amiga 4000 at amiwest this past october, and i was very surprised at how useful it was. you have access to OS4 software and all the benefits that OS4 brings to the table. but if your amiga 1200 has been 'collecting dust,' well, i don't know then. i certainly would, but then again, i use my SAM daily.
at over $120USD, it's not cheap. i'd suggest looking at @HammerD's blog (http://www.hd-zone.com/amigaos-4-1-classic/) for more information as well as links to youtube clips. you might also want to ask the question over at AWN (http://www.amigaworld.net) or amigans.net (http://www.amigans.net) as well for more views. you won't find many OS4 users left around here.

Since you already have a classic machine capable of running the latest OS then you should decide if you want to part with the money required to buy OS4.1 Classic. The OS itself seems to offer a stable environment and it also takes advantage of the classic hardware better in comparison with what OS4 did back in 2007. It's mostly "bug-less" and it offers faster and more stable OWB performance. Don't expect to do many things with it cause as it was mentioned before most of the newer software requires powerful hardware such as SAM/A1. So, i suppose that the main reasons for which to buy OS4.1 classic are:
a) show it off to former amigans
b) only out of curiosity and for testing purposes
c) cause it simply can be done
d)for the geek thing
e) what the heck! Why not?

(f) Those old m68k applications that still run tend to do so appreciably faster than they do on your real 68K, especially if they weren't custom-chipset dependent. At least that has been my finding. For example, DoomAttack (040 version) is playable at 640x400 on my machine, whereas it's cripplingly slow at that resolution on my real 040.

I was in a similar boat (pre-OS4.1, back in the OS4 days).
The main enjoyment I got from my Amigas was building up the system to the maximum, just to see how far I could take the 20-year-old computer.
I found that once I'd built it to the max (A4KT, CSPPC, Deneb, Prometheus/Voodoo3, etc, etc) I never really ended up using much OS3.x software that much, and under WarpOS couldn't really see the advantage being worth hanging onto such valuable hardware which could/would eventually break down, rendering it worthless.
I bought OS4, but again never really got that much enjoyment from it - the hardware was worth probably 2x the price of a second hand A1/Peg2, was slower, and more fiddly to set up.
I would advise buying OS4.1 to see if you enjoy using it. Since - admittedly - you don't ever use OS3.x software any more, consider - is it worth holding onto this hardware? What enjoyment do I get from it? What benefits does the classicv Amiga hardware bring compared to a more modern system?
If you like OS4.1, you can part out and sell the miggy setup & software, buy a SAM or Peg2, buy OS4.1, have it running on more stable and faster hardware, and still have change to pay the gas bill.
If you don't like it that much, you can just sell the hardware and go on a holiday this year.
Alternatively, you can continue to sit on a £1000 worth of hardware and have it collect dust...
-
Just bought AmigaOS4.1 for Classic for Christmas myself, just to try it out. I have the ppc card and am curious to see how it performs under 4.1. I like playing and tinkering with the machine, and this just is one of those things.
Just messed up my RDB though when installing, so right now I back to '0'...

Thanks for the replies, i used to use my amiga a lot mainly during the time of my putting the machine together as it has been in a few variations until i finally got the PPC card which to be honest I've had no use out of.
The main reason being is i was having problems getting Ward3D to run correct etc and then i left it for awhile during which i bought a new monitor. When i felt like giving my amiga a go with the new monitor i was having problems getting the settings correct as it looks ugly as hell on my widescreen in 1024x768.
Selling the system did pop in my head a few times but it's one of those things i wonder if id regret? i did enjoy using it when it was all running properly though.

you can't really even enjoy the new RunInUAE setups as UAE emulation is too slow on the Classics.
Why anyone would want to use an OS that needs classic emulation on, wait for it, classic Amigas is completely beyond me.
However, we're all a bit bonkers for using such old hardware
Speak for your self. It's a hobby, and not a very insane one at that.

My A1200T has always been slightly buggy. That being said, having everything including the early boot menu show up (after the OS4.x kernel loads) on my Radeon 9250 is like a dream come true. OS4.1 is (almost) everything I had ever hoped 4.0 would be.
I am having other issues with my internal IDE controller be despite those issues, I am still very much loving the crisp beautiful display and speed of OS4.x. (Long story short; I had a 4xIDE'99 device from Elbox that died on me and without the right cables setting up something directly on the motherboard for a HDD has been trying; awaiting a new FastATA 1200 MkIV from AmigaKit)
I just tried to put a SATA card in it auto detected both the card and HD right quick. As more and more drivers (and updates) get released, I think the OS4.1 is really the place to be.
As far as should you buy it, decided whether or not you actually want to spend $140 for a machine you don't use often (from the sounds of it). If you want to use it more and have used OS4.0, 4.1 is a no brainer (at least to me).
I found that I like OS 4.1 so much in fact that I've considered trying to find a non-classic PPC Amiga. I have other Amigas if I wanna get down and dirty retro. If anybody out there is interested in trading one of their extra (hehe) modern SAM or similar PPC Amigas for my pimped A1200T let me know.
The machine has:
Blizzard PowerPC (non-SCSI) 603e/233 68060/50 192MB RAM
Elbox Mediator 1200 SX
IDE CD-ROM (likely upgraded soon to a DVD-ROM)
ATI Radeon 9250 (256MB only 128MB visible; not sure why)
Subway USB
Indivision AGA (which I may want to keep for my other Amiga 1200)
Boots into OS 4.1 Classic Beautifully
The Radeon also works well in OS 3.9 and I a working on getting one of Mechy's PCI Spider USB cards as it will have much faster access than the Subway device.

Obviously, that's your call, but I find there's a lot of emotional investment tied up in my old A1200T, given that I've had the base A1200 it's built from for 19 years. I doubt I could easily part with it :)
-
Agreed... it's not just the OS in whatever version but the hardware as well. I remember reading AmigaWorld at night drooling over the A3000's just released. A few years ago I finally got one (and a 'T' recently). Can't really let them go for nostalgic reasons, even if WinUAE runs everything faster, better, etc.
I enjoy using my classic hardware and look forward to playing with 4.1 on it - even if it is dog-slow.

I think you could :) When I was selling my A1200 8 years ago I thought it could be missing it.. so many memories were with my BlizzardPPC and other Amiga gear. But in the end I got more money from my Amiga 1200 than I spent on NG Amiga system. There was no reason to use old Amiga anymore when new system was so much faster and AGA demos didnt run on RTG anyway.
-
Of course you should, then a bit later get a SAM then an X1000
I really don't see what the problem is here ;-) it's obvious!

If it is your only Amiga (made by Commodore/Escom/Amiga Technologies), then I would keep it and maybe consider buying OS4.1 for Classic. If you have any other Amiga's, I would consider selling the pimped out A1200 and use the money to help purchase a new, or used SAM or new X1000.
I sold my two Cyberstorm PPC accelerators for my A4000's to help me purchase a new X1000. I realized that I never ran any PPC software on my CSPPC's, so I was better off with the money and a CS Mk2 w/68060 @80MHz for my A4000.
Selling your BlizzardPPC and all the extra parts that you have added to it from being a stock A1200, to help you purchase a Next Gen OS4 computer might be a good solution for you too.
-
In my opinion if you are not really using your Amiga at all, you should sell the BlizzardPPC and BVision (while they are still working and extremely expensive) and get yourself a 030 card for whdload. Also get an AmigaOne for OS4.1.
-

I may change my mind when I get the rest of the hardware I just ordered (the FastATA MkIV & the supported nic card for 4.1), but this Amiga was never converted to a tower by me.
I have done quite a bit to it since I got it, but nonetheless it never held the same warmth in my heart that my original A500 did. I actually bought this one after buying the Blizzard PPC. I foolishly thought I was going to use it in my A4000D which I also still have, collecting dust. I had just upgraded the A4000D with a mediator 4000Di and thought I was buying a PPC for it. I didn't pay attention that I had bought the wrong type. So I rushed out and picked up someone else's A1200T project and started over again.
Bought another mediator for the A1200. Got the BlizzardPPC and noticed the fan was going and found someone online to repair it. This person also upgraded the crystals and the onboard CPU from a 040 to an 060 and upgraded the RAM from 64 to 192.
I put in a Si3114 SATA card tonight and that helped normalize things a bit but I am still having some occasional weird issues that I need to track down. Specifically with copying large files. I still love OS4.1. I also have a mostly stock A1200 in a wedge case sitting behind me as I type running an old flying toasters screen saver.
So even if I do part out, sell as a single unit or keep my A1200T I still have other Amigas to keep me company. I am seriously thinking about it because I want an AmigaOne 500. Who know's I may eventually just fork out the cash and buy one and keep everything.
-

It's different in my case. For me, the 1200T is the evolutionary "missing link" that joins the dots between the original Amiga machines and the PPC-only machines that have come along since. It's a multiboot machine and presently runs all versions from 3.1 onwards. Having it makes my A1 machine that sits on top seem less of a disconnect.
There was no reason to use old Amiga anymore when new system was so much faster and AGA demos didnt run on RTG anyway.
Again, my 1200 is at an interesting intersection. Sure, it's a lot slower than my A1 for PPC native code. However, when running 4.1 it's also significantly faster than my 68040 was for many legacy 68K applications and if they require the original chipset for anything, they still run.
-
I must admit I really regret selling my A1200T with PPC etc all those years ago, I wonder if it is still alive and in one piece somewhere?
Sigh, If only you could turn back time!
-
@Karlos. Do you really have your Amiga's stacked up on each other?
Not trying to brainwash anyone but have you considered swapping your A1 for a MOS Macmini? Imagine the space saving benefits...

The machine under the desk is the A1. It's now sat on top of the A1200T in place of the old PC that was there. Said PC is now in the other room for experimenting with esoteric operating systems (MenuetOS was the last one).
Not trying to brainwash anyone but have you considered swapping your A1 for a MOS Macmini?
I've had the A1 for long enough now that I'm feeling a bit sentimental towards it too. Given that it's still in working order, it's also becoming something of a rarity.
