Title: Poll: How do you pronounce 68K CPUs?
Post by: Matt_H on January 20, 2012, 01:38:23 AM
I call them oh-three-oh (or sixty-eight oh-three-oh, if I'm feeling formal), but I'm curious to hear what others say :)

Obviously there will be some linguistic differences due to the many countries represented here. Please share pronunciations in your local language, too!

68K for referring to the family, just the number pronounced normally, or 20, 30, 40 and 60 for the respective CPUs (68000 always as 68000).

I don't usually say it out load, since nobody I know would understand what the hell I'm talking about, but sixty-eight oh-two-oh sounds right to me.

Oh-x-Oh, but done in an outrageous French accent while farting the Star-Spangled Banner and playing the spoons.

HAHA! Combine this with a Welsh and Brittany Spears Louisiana accent and this would be quite a sight!

For me i just say Oh-x-Oh. But i would also accept "the Motorola's".

My sympathies go out to pc users who are forced to pronounce x86. How freaky is that...

Silly british. :D

Was always "sixty eight k" for the 68000, and "oh two/three,four/six oh" up here.

Yeah, that does seem true! I also say Oh two oh, oh three oh etc :)

I call the 68000, six eight thousand.

Nobody else called it the "sixty eight thousand and twenty" ?

Only kidding. I've always called them "sixty eight oh eight/ten/twelve/twenty/thirty/forty/sixty", except for the 68000 which is just the "sixty eight thousand". Generally just shortened to "oh twenty" when in the company of others that are familiar.

Oddly enough, I've always called the old x86 parts "oh/one/two/three/four eight six". Never "eighty oh eighty six".

68-blank, 68-0-10/20/30/40/60, 68-3-28, 68-8-82 etc.
When speaking English I say "oh" for -0-, in Norwegian and German I say "null", and in a rush I drop the 68. Remember once I talked to a mac guy who spoke the "30 processor" in his mac, I really didn't understand what the heck he was talking about :)

I go with:

Generic:
Sixty-Eight-Kay

Shorthand:
Oh-three-oh (etc)

Formal:
Six-Eight-Oh-Three-Oh

but then I'm weird...

Completely off topic, but I sure wish I could find more old Land Rovers around these parts that aren't stripped of engines and used as some stationary prop in the African section of zoos.

When happens to think/speak in english (since I'm italian) I'm used to say -zero-twenty/thirty/forty/sixty (because in italian the 'oh' is pronounced 'zero', since it's a number.  :)

For the father of the family, a plain sixty-eight-thousand; but sometimes happens when I read to say 'sixty-eight-k' in my mind... :D  .

In Spanish, the language Amiga name comes from, it's like this:

68K: Sesenta y ocho mil
68020: Cero veinte
68030: Cero treinta
...
68060: Cero sesenta
Title: Re: Poll: How do you pronounce 68K CPUs?

In Italian:

"sessantotto zero trenta" (68030) or simply "zero trenta"

or "sessantottomila trenta"

Amiga 1200 = Amiga mille e duecento
Amiga 500 = Amiga cinquecento
Amiga 600 = Amiga seicento

But in English I say: oh-thirty and sometimes sixty eight zero thirty

I wonder what it all sounds like in Klingonese. I will just throw it through the good old English to Klingon translator...

Disappointingly 68000 translates as 68000 :(

But interestingly Amiga translates as 'IH be'. This is Klingon for beautiful woman  :)

I have a question. How do people say Linux and Ubuntu?

I say Linux as "Linn-ex". Some people say "Line-ex". I've also heard "Line-ous".

And i say Ubuntu as "You-bun-too". But others say "Ooo-boon-too".

What about everyone else?

Silly british. :D

It depends on the context.

During a conversation about amiga accelerators I would use oh twenty, oh thirty, oh forty, oh sixty etc.

If that would lead to ambiguity then I would say sixty eight thousand and thirty etc.

For the 68000 I would always say sixty eight thousand. The 68010 would probably always be sixty eight thousand and ten, but it's largely irrelevant.

I used to pronounce linux the way americans would (line-uks), however linus pronounces it differently.
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/SillySounds/

ubuntu is supposed to be oo-boon-too, but it seems to be pronounced oo-bun-too around here. I can't remember using it in conversation, but I'd probably use the latter.

btw I'm british.

Linus himself recorded a message a few years ago to explain how to pronounce it.

Linux is pronounced: Linn-Ucks :)

Yes, the "i" in Linux is a short "ee" sound as in "In" in northern Europe, it is not pronounced like "aye" as in "Line". :)

Northern Europe? English phonetics is fubar, the French is different but at least consistant, the rest of us pronounce Linux perfectly well by default.

I pronounce it like six-eighty-thirty, six-eighty-sixty...and 68000 being 68k, with the arch as m68k.  I know, it's not even consistent.

I had a boss back when Ubuntu was just getting some name recognition, and he couldn't remember what it was called.  It came up in conversation and he referred to it as "Ubi Dubi."  Since then that is what I call it :-)  Interesting that everyone knows what I'm talking about even if they've not heard it before.
