Title: Need help with a broke Scandoubler. PLEASE !!!!!! :-x
Post by: Mugo on January 10, 2004, 02:05:36 PM
         Hello everybody,

I'm a Brazilian Amiga user for over 10 years, and been an Amiga.org listener for years. Now i finally decided to use my membership  :-D
I have an ScanMagic (i think is it) internal scandoubler on my A1200T. But recently, the PLCC SMD socket broke, and i can't use it anymore. I'm very sad for some time, because i can't live without my old games. I do have a Mediator/Voodoo3 3000, but nothing like the good old games . . .
Do someone knows where in the world can i find a 84-pin PLCC SMD socket for my Scandoubler ??? But i need someone that can sell me only one piece, at a reasonable price . . .  :-o
Or then, do someone have any spare Scandoubler to sell me, or knows a dealer that still holds these on stock, and sell them for a very reasonable price ??
I'm really freaking out, because i'm a experienced electronics technician, and cannot see my perfect working order Scandoubler, goes to waste because of a simple connctor . . . here in my country i can't find these connectors.
      Please, help me  :-x

      Thanks in advence !

      Marcelo Pires.

You should be able to get this connector any any general electronics store. For instance I found this (http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/module.asp?CartID=030810215555694&moduleno=2534&Products=3) in about 30 seconds. It would be a waste of time (and money) for you to try getting this from the UK, but surely there are the same kind of places in Brazil.

Hi KennyR,

Thanks for your reply.
Yes, here in Brazil i can find the same connector you found. But they are of no use to me, because they are "thru hole" type, and i need SMD for my Scandoubler. Here in Brazil, i can't find the SMD type.

There's no way you can't get hold of an SMD one. I won't believe it. I find it difficult to get hold of stuff that ISN'T SMD these days.

I would have Googled one for you if it wasn't for the language barrier. Try asking on a Brazillian electronics forum instead (or nearest equivalent). If all else fails, search for some Brazillian dude which have an electronics page and ask him to help you out.

IRC might also be helpfull (Brazillian channels).

Hi Jetrace,

Thanks for your reply.
Believe me !! I'm stuck here in Brazil !
The very few suppliers here in my country that have it, only supply large amounts, at very expensive prices. And in this case, would be far cheaper buy a new scandoubler.
I have to say that this is a shame to me, but here nobody have interest if you are satisfied with their services or not. Of course there are exceptions, but they are few.
As a friend of mine (once my boss) used to say: here in Brazil nobody sells anything. If you want, you have to buy it.  :-(
Anyway, thanks a lot for the replies !

Regards,
Marcelo Pires.

Here are a few places that seem to have them, but none in your country.

I get most of my industrial electronic components, including SMD PLCC sockets, from RS (Radio Spares) and Farnell, who are both international companies and have branches in many countries.
If neither of them are in Brazil, it's probably no big deal to get some sent from the nearest one to you.
Both of these companies are here in the tiny country of New Zealand, so I'd be surprised if they didn't have anything set up in your area.

They sell small quantities and are extremely fast, but are a bit pricey.  Still, it's only a PLCC socket!

Dear friends,

Thank you all very much for your help.
I find 2 dealers that have the socket, and emailed them about avaiability, quantities, and prices.
Hope to have an positive answer soon :)
Again, thanks a lot !!
