Title: PCMCIA C/F card 'not working' with Skick
Post by: Llamaman on January 18, 2012, 11:34:02 PM
Hi there, sorry if this has been asked zillions of times already!

I am Skicking to the workbench okay by choosing kickstart 3.0 ROM to try & access the 4GB C/F card in the slot.

However, I'm still trying to get the hang of my A1200 and I'm not sure how to get the C/F card to appear on the desktop when I plug it in, when using Skick

It shows up straight away when I boot to WB 3.1 with accelerator card removed.

Any help/suggestions will be appreciated. Any questions re: above....please ask away:)

Cheers Chris

kickstart 3.1 have the pcmcia bug that if you have a ram card or an accelerator with zorro 2 memory with 8mb ram pcmcia will stop to work
use kickstart 3.0 and everything will work ok

"use kickstart 3.0 and everything will work ok"

That's the issue I'm having...I am using kickstart 3.0 but the pcmcia c/f card
doesn't show up on the desktop.

Just need a little helping hand:)

What accelerator is it?
Does it show up if you use skick without the accelerator?

Hi Chris, i can confirm that using a 128mb compact flash pcmcia card and booting into wb3.0 using skick with 8mb activated worked fine for me. The pcmcia would not work in kickstart 3.1 unless i jumper down the ram to 4mb. We are talking about the same accelerator you bought from me.

Is 3.0 booting from the same partition as 3.1? (i.e., is CF0 in Devs:DOSDrivers under both 3.0 and 3.1?)

Could be the PCMCIA reset bug. Kick into 3.0 with the CF adapter card unplugged, then insert it after boot.

@Dougal.....I thought it was you! I shall keep my eye out for 128mb cards, or more than likely I will 'jump' down to 4MB on the card and carry on using WB3.1.

I don't intend on doing much memory intensive stuff on my little monster and if I do need the full 8MB, well, it's not exactly a huge job to do.

Thanks for your help guys anyway.:)

You could install a switch to the jumper which is what i was gonna do until i found out about skick. Good luck. Its true the mtec is not so pcmcia friendly but its a great card. Enjoy :)

This tread is daft this is hardware issue not wb bug i use 3.1 with compact flash card
Just get the mod done on your mb its not diffcult or like they say take card in and out again after boot , why make life diffcult by dual booting

Not quite sure if you meant the whole thread is daft, or just the replies I've received?

Can you explain what the motherboard mod is to me? I tried taking the card out & putting it back in, but that didn't work for me either. I assume my c/f card is not compatible, and I may be buying a different one soon.

For now though, I have jumpered the accelerator down to 4MB and all is well, as far as I'm concerned.

I've only very recently bought an A1200 and an M-Tech Viper T1230 off a fellow ebayer/Amiga.org user and I am slowly, but surely, finding my way round the Amiga's 'idiosyncrasies' (as in I've been spoilt by the PC & Atari ST way of doing things, like putting a disk in the drive & just click on the Install button/icon and everything works as it should).

I had an A500 & an A1200 years & years ago and never got to learn how they 'worked'. All I was interested in at the time was playing games on them and used an ST back in those days for serious stuff.

According to your list of hardware, you have 4M RAM on your 1200?
If that's true, you mean either a 2M expansion totaling 4M or a 4M expansion.

Since the conflict with PCMCIA and memory is cards over 4M and 3.1 Kickstart, you should be OK.

As for the hardware mod, that can be done.
I just use cardreset and cardpatch in my SS.
And it doesn't affect the over 4M PCMCIA conflict.

I've got a 4GB c/f card internal fitted and I'm also using a 4GB c/f card in the PCMCIA slot.

The M-tech card has 8MB of RAM fitted.

I meant the replys hehe
Am just getting bit lost people all over the shop know talking using the pcmcia as memory slot or using pcmcia memory cards what the ?

Theres nothing wrong with your compact flash storgage card if it works it works
I take a picture of my mother board and attach it if i can , am not really sure
You need to do it though as taking the card in and out after boot should get to show up
As for accerator card some are more pcmcia freidnly from memory but agian wont stop you using your compact flash card as mine works in my 3 diffrent 1200 mbs
I have mbz 1200 ram card 4megs of ram

will post picture when camera charged
