Millions of Americans oppose SOPA and PIPA because these bills would censor the Internet and slow economic growth in the U.S.
Two bills before Congress, known as the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House, would censor the Web and impose harmful regulations on American business. Millions of Internet users and entrepreneurs already oppose SOPA and PIPA.
The Senate will begin voting on January 24th. Please let them know how you feel. Sign this petition urging Congress to vote NO on PIPA and SOPA before it is too late.

Yeah, I know, but there's a partial solution! If you can get to the page you need through google, do it and when the page shows up, immediately press CTRL-A and then CTRL-C. Now you can paste the page into a text editor as ascii text. Not ideal, but it works (checked it).
-
A handier way might be to disable JavaScript - it should work as before then. But can you really not go a day without Wikipedia? ;)

I can. I wish it wasn't always the first result in every google search.

Will it matter what the public thinks? Hardly. And all the government has to do in order to change the opinion is to say "but think about teh TERRORISTS!!11!1", and the public will let them do anything they want, including listening in to every phone call, every e-mail, monitoring every book loaned from the library, taking your fingerprints at the airports, etc. And then putting preassure on other countries (like European) to play ball and take similar actions, and cooperate.
This SOPA or PIPA or whatever is just one of many measures taken to censor, restrict, monitoring and controlling the Internet. The public doesn't really know what's happening, some don't care, some opposes it but can't do anything about it, some other opposes it but get converted as soon as the "terrorist card" is being played out (which is a universal card you can play out that trumps anything else in any and all context). The totalitarian Orwell society is in large parts already here, these SOPA/PIPA are merely pieces in the bigger jigsaw puzzle that's almost finished.
I don't really care what happens in the USA, as long as they keep the madness at their border. But I hate it when this kind of **** is being forced onto us living in the free world, just because the US is a long term traditional ally and important trading partner. I hate it to see my children having to grow up and live in an Orwell world shaped by George Bush Junior's paranoia and his other weaknesses. I'm not an American, and living in my own country - why should my life, both on and off the Internet, be affected by mad US legislation?

The main problem with this attitude is my country's offensive habit of promoting bad ideas to our allies.

Welcome to the prison planet.
I'm just amazed at how many people oppose this sort of legislation (and damn it, they should) but still, they carry a spy in the pocket wherever they go. That's your mobile I'm talking about.
The whole thing sickens me to the core. At least this sort of thing makes more and more people pay attention. Every day more are starting to see the reality of those in power. Greedy, selfish, maniac parasites sucking the lifeblood from the 99.9% of human beings that are worth something. Filth.

What about if you ARE an American and you'd like the power hungry elites from sticking their thumb in every European countries fifth point of contact and working its hand like a finger puppet? We are reaping what we sowed in the 60s and 70s with ignorant sheeple sucking at the tit of tiny subsidy while we build up the corporatist/theocratic state in the perfect mockery of 1930s Germany, minus the overt anti-semitism. What can you do, when people in this country can't even find neighboring STATES on a map, let alone another country?
Can you europeans do us a solid? Stop encouraging our imperialist bankers, stop loaning us money, stop trading with us, restore your economies, quit sending us troops to "help" us? The sooner we just collapse under the weight of stupid fiscal policy, the better.

Big Brother is still trying.
At least The White House's stand is encouraging .... http://mashable.com/2012/01/16/white-house-sopa-petition/
Everyone should write their senator on this though - at this point maybe even call them and E-Mail them.

No wiki for 24 hours is better than no wiki forever (if sopa passes) - it's worth it.

Funny, cause I don't hear millions of Americans talking about this... :(

What's good for our corporate overlords is good for everyone, right?
-
The really irritating thing is that it's not even the majority of corporations that want this, it's the Media turds that are pissing themselves because their old methods of sucking money from their customers are failing.

If you need to use wikipedia, just disable javascript. There's some onload handler that kicks in after the content has been loaded and puts the blackout notification up. Or at least that was true this lunchtime.

I think maybe they are doing it because they think it's what people want. We had a similar thing in Australia about media censorship. The government bowing to public pressure to stop child porn (and other stuff) from the net proposed internet censorship. The result was a back lash of the government being accused of trying to oppress peoples lives (like China does). After the backlash they canceled the proposed changes because that's what people wanted. This just goes to show that sometimes you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. Sheeesh... you just can't win :(
Now I'm off the beach. My friend Glen just got half his leg eaten off by a 2 metre white pointer shark. Cool! I'm going down there to take a look.

Here in Spain the law called "Sinde" is for the previous culture female minister, that besides is scripter for movies and "very friend" the artist, and the SGAE is an association of spanish authors that only get money of the people, but also reciently the director of this SGAE has been accused of appropriating of money of own SGAE, here the laws are for four people that use them to ear money and to be a new richmen.

This country is doomed. We almost got free from our overlords in the 2nd Republic but those military bastards took over and "fixed" things so nothing would really change. Now we're in the hands of the spanish tea-party equivalent... This is going to explode once again.

Yep, and MegaUpload is based in Hong Kong...
...not in these here United (under internationally inspired Federal dictatorship) States.

Put it country simple,
Earth has a lot of things other folks might want,
like the whole planet.
And maybe these folks would like a few changes made,
Like more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere,
and room for their way of life.
We've seen this happen before,
right in these United States.
Your way of life destroyed the Indian's way of life,
The Indian Reservation is extinction.
But I offer this distinction
I'm with the invaders,
no use trying to hide that.
And at the same time I disagree
with some of the things they are doing.
Oh, we're not united any more than you are.
Oh, we're not united any more than you are.
Conservative faction is set on nuclear war
as a solution to the Indian personality.
Others disagree
I don't claim my motives are 100% humane,
but I do say if we can't think up anything quieter,
and tidier, than that, we aren't all that much
better than you earthlings.
