Greetings:
I have an old school BBS that I am working on maybe putting back on line and it is PC based (Major BBS 6.25). The machine is currently connected to my A2000 via Null Modem Cable and they do communicate fine.
Just for discussion sake, the settings on both ends are 38400, N, 8, 1.
The Amiga came with Baud Bandit 1.5 already on it and I have been moving files over to the Amiga from the Pentium 120 PC which are ADF.
The main problem I am having with BB 1.5 or 2.0 is that I can not seem to get the ANSI colors on the Miggy. I also downloaded Ncomm from Aminet and it won't even run on my A2000, errors out with cannot find reglibrary or something like that.
Was wondering what I need to do to make BB work with full ANSI color or what would be a better comm program for the ANSI BBS terminal type. I would also need a lead on getting any program suggestion. Ncomm for example had an ADF, but the image was corrupt and the Aminet version yeilds the error I mentioned.
I hope someone can help.
Thanks,
Mike

Why don't you just install the missing lib so that you can get ncomm working? :P

JRComm was my favorite on my Amiga 500 but looks like it is not at Aminet.

What OS are you running on the A2000? It's sounds like 1.3 which limits your choices (and I don't know what would run on 1.3).
I use 'term' by preference, Ncomm in 2nd place, but don't think I've loaded Ncomm in a decade. Both are OS2+.

Thanks for the replies. Ncomm is now running. IS there a manual for it someplace or whatnot? I of course found the menus and such, but it doesn't have a configuration file or phonebook file currently though I did manage to confirm that the ANSI Colors are fine using the program. I still think BB would be fine if it supported colors... it seems to do fine with general VT100 type stuff.
Any kind of quick reference or manual would be appreciated for Ncomm though.
Thanks again for the help so far.

It's been several years, but I seem to remember that for some reason JRComm didnt work right with WB2.0 forcing the move to Terminus. That may be totally wrong. I do remember liking JRComm alot better...

Was going to try Terminus next, but I think Ncomm will work. Just need to get some stuff setup with it . On the PC side, I use Procomm Plus (DOS) and always did back in the day. Even in Windows (up to Win 95) used PCPLUS for Windows. On The Mac there was this neat little terminal program called White Night, but ended up using Zterm like the rest later on.
Since I am a old school Sysop and ran my own BBS, plus co-sysoped another one... I have a soft spot in my heart for serial comm. I admit a lack of experience in the Amiga side on this front, but it seems pretty straight forward. I am still trying to get my head around some of the AmigaOS idiosyncrasies, like .devices and such. I have not gotten too far into the "nuts and bolts" of the Amiga yet.
My particular A2000 is unique among machines in that I think it is running OS 2.0 at least, it seems the ROM revision is 37.something and the WB is 34.something (off the top of my head). Ncomm does run fine on it and indeed after the reqlibrary was installed, that problem vanished. Now it is just a matter of figuring out the Ncomm stuff... so once again, if anyone knows of a good PDF of the manual or can direct me to a good link for (particularly keyboard shortcuts) and configuration help for Ncomm, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for all the help on this!!
BTW: My BBS was PC based and ran initially on RemoteAccess 2.02 and now is a Major BBS 6.25 setup. These are IBM PC softwares. I do want to explore setting up a BBS on Mac (68k, OS 7) and on the Amiga as well... may dedicate one of my A500's to that task if I can find a sidecar for it ;-) or rig something up for a hard drive otherwise.
Anyhow, trying NOT to make this into a novel. I think I might post an introduction at some point in that forum area.

Need any help or advice with BBS progs on the Amiga side, give me a holler. Old otherwise useless commodity x86 PC's running UAE make really good Amiga BBS hosts.
Most people these days on the windows side of things just run Synchronet, which is one heck of a BBS program if you don't mind PC's.
List of virtually all known BBS programs for any platform you could ever imagine.

Hey Duce!
Yeah, I am well aware of Syncronet and indeed the bbs documentary series and their site you posted. Very good information indeed!
Yeah, I welcome anyone's input on the Amiga side of things for the BBS hobby, we did not have a lot of folks calling our BBS from Amigas, but I did have a few Apple II folks and even some Mac folks. Ironically enough, when I was running my BBS, I was being drawn into the Mac community and was drinking that kool-aid a little heavily.
I suppose I can thank the Macintosh for my interest in graphics and my foray into the Web development and Internet world around 1994. But even further thanks should be to our beloved Miggy for Deluxe Paint and Video Toaster and Lightwave 3D which is kind of the forerunner to all the graphics software we use today. Dpaint obviously influenced Photoshop for example!!
I do agree. My "BBS machine" is an old Gateway Pentium 120 I rescued from a recycler and it is running DOS 6.22 and my old BBS (Major 6.25). It has been indispensable as a go-between to my A2000 for getting ADFs over and getting those in turn put back to disk. I use Procomm Plus (DOS) on the PC side and currently (obviously) either Baud Bandit or Ncomm on the A2000. The link is null modem cable currently.
Actually, I am contemplating linking the P120 and my modern PC if I can get my laplink cable to behave as a null modem. I think IIRC that it will work. I have my "real" null modem adapter in use as I mentioned. But the other serial link would allow for eliminating the "sneakernet" aspect of my current transfer strategy. (using a floppy to go from my modern PC to my P120 and move like two ADFs at a time that way).
Anyhow, yeah I would like to talk with you about comm programs and indeed get your take on Ncomm or BB and maybe get a "guide" to using comms on the miggy.
Thanks for the reply!

I may be remembering wrong...... that's what happens to old amiga users, but i think ncomm was what I used to use for bbs's. of course, if your hard core, Kermit is good :P
