News from kas1e via amigaworld.net
Most of DjNick's music and graphics was done on Amiga back in the days, and now, he want to help AmigaOS4 to get some better design by making improved skins, icons and graphics. But its pretty hard to be working effectively on gfx design of OS and OS components, when you don't own the actual machine. So, this bountys aim is to get Nikola a sam460EX Lite motherboard & AmigaOS4.1 licence. The Sam460 is EUR 610,- excl. shipping and vat. So we should end at around EUR 850,- which is what we are trying to collect.
Do you remember the days when Amiga was popular because of our skilled artists, who contributed stunning tunes and graphics for amiga games, demos and apps? Sure you remember those days. Many of us was attracted to Amiga because of that.
One of the old-known graphic artist and musicians is DjNick (Nikola Tomic, from Serbia). He contributed for Amiga community back in the past with f.ex. non-commercial music video for a goa-trance song with the name "Warp", which features 3D animations made in LightWave. You can check that video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nD_AltKxwwo
DjNick also Composed music and sound effects for Amiga game "Capital Punishment" for Canadian Publishers "ClickBoom". It was the top Seller "beat’em-up" game in 1996, with music and SFX scores as high as 97% in some computer magazines.
Some recent work of DjNick can be seen on the freshly done AmigaOS4 site http://amigaos.net, which was done to help Hyperion to have a good looking and professional site. Just check all the links below, where you can find most of DjNick's work (music, graphics etc.).

The work Nikola will do as compensation for the motherboard+OS is outlined belov. Keep in mind that this will be not be official work managed by Hyperion, but 3rd party contributions from a skilled graphic artist.
1. New AOS4 themes (At least one new stylish theme).
2. New Frames for MUI (version of MUI, which will be released in AmigaOS4.2). Those frames can also be used on Morphos's MUI4, so MOS-users can contribute as well;)
3. New MUI themes (At least one new stylish theme). As we soon will have an updated MUI(4?), themes can also be used for MorphOS MUI4 as well.
4. New AOS4 backdrops (1, 2 or more).
5. New AOS4 icons for different kind of projects/games/demos/mags/apps (1, 2 or more, depends).
6. Workbench loading audio samples with female voice.
7. AmigaOS video presentations and animations on Youtube with examples what Amiga can do today.
Understand that this is the minimum work that will be done as compensation for the bounty, much more will hopefully come in the future.
With this bounty we can attract a good designer that loves Amiga computers and it's OS, please make a donation today.

A new 850eur computer to make some icons and themes? people is too good.
-
as long you can do icons and wallpapers, anyone get sam+os4 for free. just start a bounty :D
-
As long as you can contribute to the community and have a proven track record of being able to deliver quality goods, then the community will help you to be able to make that contribution. Seems fair enough to me....?
-
This is lame. I could see getting a bounty started for a developer but anything less than a developer is a waste. Artists are a dime a dozen, programming talent is rare, especially programming talent who would even bother messing around with this stuff.
-
While I appreciate all contributions, I'll save my bounty money and put it towards a decent browser for OS4.

I like the look of his work in web design and some of his artwork, but I too am more interested in supporting, promoting, and helping out existing and potential software developers. I am glad that there were enough people that felt differently and were quick to open their wallets to fill the donation requested. I think they had the amount they wanted in less than 24 hours, which is pretty impressive in these bad economic times, as the price of a SAM460 system is not a trivial amount.
Congrats DjNick on your soon to be ordered SAM460. I hope it brings many hours of productive work and projects for all OS4.x users.
Small wonder that they posted it on a different site, after your remarks about what you would do with A.org if you had some cash and the trademark for the Amiga name. That one got you in some hot water with many people here and in the existing Amiga community. Maybe you can make some artwork for the users of original Commodore Amigas too, to reduce their hurt feelings. After all, they have at least as much rights to the name Amiga as any other faction of these communities. I don't see interest in the original 68k Amiga ever completely going away, and I don't think it should.
I am very much looking forward to the Natami project getting to the point where the hardware is completely finished and they start selling boards, or complete systems to more than just beta testers. I think it will be great to have a 68k Amiga system that is capable of running 2 to 4 times faster in almost every way than my 68060 A4000. Brilliant that they have created a new blitter that is multiple times faster than the original Amiga blitter and have also increased the speed and features of the AGA chipset. It is a great project and I hope that they can get it far enough along to release to the public within the next 6 months (it will take me that long to save up enough money to buy one, after my purchase of one of the "First Contact" X1000 systems later this month).
Sorry for going off topic and congrats again for the success of your bounty project for the SAM460 system.

Hello guys.
I`d like to thank you all for your amazing and quick support!
I am sure you won`t be dissapointed. I still love Amiga and I will create some good graphics stuff and will try to make Amiga look better, futuristic, cool but underground and more attractive & professional to new users.
I can`t wait to new system arrives. It will bring me back home after nearly 10 years of work on other platforms :)

OK, so find us a coder with a proven track record who wants to come back but can't afford it, and then start a bounty for it.
No reason there can't be more than one bounty.

That seems to be Trevor Dickinson's area of expertise, I'd ask him.
Of course there's room for all kinds of bounties, but I find it interesting how quickly the community was able to raise quite a large sum of money for such a superfluous thing that doesn't really advance the platform in any kind of meaningful way. If you had a car that was blowing smoke out of the tail pipe and leaving behind a trail of green liquid would you take it in for a paint job and install a new horn?
And not to slight djnick, his work is outstanding.

......[snip] Artists are a dime a dozen, programming talent is rare, especially programming talent who would even bother messing around with this stuff.
I take *COMPLETE* offense to this!:madashell: I am *NOT* a "dime a dozen" and if you'd like to call me out on that, I'd be more than *HAPPY* to challenge you to a contest on who could build the better 3D model, animation reel, storyboard test, concept art, etc. Hell, I'll even challenge you to traditional, comic illustration, which is what got me in my "dime a dozen" field in the first place.
I've spent *YEARS* honing my craft and to say that programming talent is rare compared to the talent a *TRUE* artist has is rude. I can draw *AND* sculpt/model the *ENTIRE* human muscular system in less than 4 hours. Can you say the same?? :furious:
Good luck DJNick. Art, in itself, has made more contributions to human society for thousands of years, than programming has for the last 70 or so.

Finding programming talent to work on AOS 4 is rare, just look at the state it's in, how long it's taken to get there and what's sorely needed. Now take a good look around at all the artists floating about on the forums, they're everywhere. They literally are a dime a dozen. Good grief, how many more icon sets and wall papers do we really need around here?
I'm going to have to decline your challenge, after all, I'm a software developer, not an artist. I run a small company producing games for iOS, Android and OS X. I can tell you for a fact that artists really are a dime a dozen just based on what they're willing to work for. I'm sorry you don't like to hear that, it's just a reality that most artists are broke and have to work other jobs while doing what they love on the side. I never said they weren't talented, but honestly most aren't and most have problems following through and completing their tasks.

I've done work on both Mass Effect and Neverwinter Nights, for BioWare and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation for Midway and I can honestly tell you it wasn't the Art Department that was known for blowing deadlines......
Also, since you're not an artist, but a developer, don't talk sh!t about someone getting a machine to create new graphics for OS4 and put your money where mouth is. Why don't *YOU* start developing something useful for it.
Pot. Kettle. Black.

Software is never done on time. That's why when we estimate we multiple by 2, add some more and then prepare excuses along the way. However, in my case, being the small fry that I am, I get all that work done and out of the way with before I contract with an artist. That way I can clearly define exactly what I need and pay for only what I need, without jerking around the artist and having a bunch of graphics work done and paid for that doesn't get used. Nothing can damage your reputation worse than trying to change the terms mid contract and having a pissed off contractor who would inevitably go around and tell everyone how awful and crooked you are. If I had a full time artist on staff I'm sure he'd complain that I didn't get code shipped on time.

My choice of profession has no relevance here. AOS 4 has no pressing need for wall papers, icon sets and other superfluous crap. It does however need a lot of work in the software department. The main complaints I hear over and over again are about drivers and applications. I don't think that pointing out that AOS 4 has needs to be met that are far more important than window dressing and you tube demonstrations is taking "sh1t" about some one getting a machine. I simply see it as inefficient, wasted resource allocation. I know you want to try and steer thin into "koaftder is talking crap about djnick getting a machine", and I think that's cheap and missing the point. I dropped my first comment when the bounty was half met.
-
I'm sure djnick can provide some nice UI elements for OS4 users.
I don't think this will increase the interest in OS4 itself though. I don't see many posts from colorblind people on the forums saying "I would use OS4 if only it were high contrast..." for example.

Your choice of profession is ENTIRELY relevant here. You're a software developer. If you hear people complaining about a lack of apps and drivers, then start coding and porting them. It's not rocket science. It's your opinion to see DJNick getting a machine donated for the purpose of creating new icons and art for OS4 as and I'm quoting you verbatim in toto here, "as inefficient, wasted resource allocation", but my comments have nothing to do with him getting a machine, but about your comments.
You belittled people who choose to do art. Being a graphic designer isn't easy. You spend years practicing to draw, sculpt, paint, etc. Sure there are a lot of "hobbyists" that do art in their spare time and many of them aren't worth their weight in salt, but need I remind you of Windows Millennium? There are *EQUALLY* as many "dime a dozen" coders out there for every "talented coder". Your comments about artist's work being "crap" is rude, trite and insulting.
You make a comment about your artists blowing deadlines, having crap work, etc., but perhaps it's because of what they were PAID! I don't work for free and I don't take jobs that aren't worth my time, ESPECIALLY when the pay isn't worth it. I have friends who are coders that have to take jobs they don't want to do, 'cos our economy sucks. Plain and simple. Does that make them crappy coders? I think not....
You are entitled to your own opinions, but the people that chose to donate money to a guy who offered up new art for OS4 made their decisions and that's the end of it. A PROFESSIONAL artist takes PRIDE in their work. You insulted *ME*, 'cos you lumped all artists together as 2nd-rate charlatans who just try to steal people's money and give nothing in return, but sub-par work.
Once again, I reiterate that if there's such a need for new apps and drivers, since you're a software developer, start doing it.
Or are you just one of those "dime a dozen" software developers..... :roflmao:

There seems to be a lot of resentment in this thread.
A couple of key points to remember:
1) Nobody in OS4's seekrit HQ said "What we need right now is an artist! Quick, to the bountymobile!", rather someone wanting to provide some artistic input asked and a bounty was set up. So comments about wasting money supporting an artist instead of a developer is a bit irrelevant. No developer (as far as I know anyway) has come forward in the same manner. One would hope that if they did, people would be just as willing to pay for them to get a system.
2) It was a bounty. Absolutely nobody was under any obligation to pay into it. Ergo, the only people that did were those happy to do so. It's a fair bet that those complaining the loudest about it didn't pay into it.
You know what? Fair play to the guy, I hope he enjoys it. Considering that one of the common complaints levelled against the platform is the cost of ownership, perhaps a useful precedent has been set and somebody with some development talent who thought it was financially unrealistic might reconsider and we can all complain about it if they get one in a similar way ;)

No it's not, I could be a dog catcher, my opinion wouldn't be any different.
If you hear people complaining about a lack of apps and drivers, then start coding and porting them.
Why would I do that? I don't work for free.
It's not rocket science.
Compared to skinning window borders and creating wall papers, it is.
It's your opinion to see DJNick getting a machine donated for the purpose of creating new icons and art for OS4 as and I'm quoting you verbatim in toto here, "as inefficient, wasted resource allocation", but my comments have nothing to do with him getting a machine, but about your comments.
It is a waste of resource allocation. It will do nothing to make AOS 4 a modern operating system delivering the features users have been complaining about for ages. The only people I ever hear complain about the way it looks are people who don't use AOS 4.
Read further up the thread, I described DJNick's work as "outstanding". Look, I'm a game developer, I do my own models in 3dsMAX, I've sculpted with zbrush and mud box. I've got a pile of machines in here working as vary rendering nodes and doubling as space heaters in my office. While I must admit that I totally suck at rigging, I do have an idea about what artists do in this field and to be honest, it's not as hard as the work I do in software development. And yea, there are a lot of crappy developers out there. Honestly, I'm more scared to hire a programmer than an artist.
You make a comment about your artists blowing deadlines
They do, constantly, and I don't even ask much of them.
having crap work, etc.,
A lot of it really is
but perhaps it's because of what they were PAID!
Nah, they work for what they're willing to work for. I'm not enslaving anyone.
I don't work for free and I don't take jobs that aren't worth my time, ESPECIALLY when the pay isn't worth it.
Neither would I.
I have friends who are coders that have to take jobs they don't want to do, 'cos our economy sucks. Plain and simple. Does that make them crappy coders? I think not....
They probably are crappy coders, those are the ones who are unemployed right now.
You are entitled to your own opinions, but the people that chose to donate money to a guy who offered up new art for OS4 made their decisions and that's the end of it.
I think they wasted their money.
A PROFESSIONAL artist takes PRIDE in their work.
I should hope so!
You insulted *ME*, 'cos you lumped all artists together as 2nd-rate charlatans who just try to steal people's money and give nothing in return, but sub-par work.
I never said anything of the sort. Stealing people's money and giving nothing in return but sub-par work? I never said that.
Once again, I reiterate that if there's such a need for new apps and drivers, since you're a software developer, start doing it.
I don't work for free, and neither do you so I guess we're in agreement about something!
Or are you just one of those "dime a dozen" software developers..... :roflmao:
I prefer the term masochist, I mean, just look at the industry I decided to entangle myself in! At least I'm having a good time.
I'm sorry you're so offended at what I said. You of all people, having worked for some big houses and on some 'AAA' titles, should know that graphics guys are a dime a dozen. The labor pool overflowith because everybody want's a piece of that pie because, and lets be honest with ourselves, it's easier, and funner work than grinding code. They're pumping out graphic artists from the colleges like weenies from a sausage factory and none of these kids can find any work!

os4 LOOKS ugly, or looked at least last time ive tried. same goes for aros. and as ive never had an opportunity to see mos in action i dont know but it is difficult to do worse that bot previous.
some time ago ive ended up with doing my own simple theme for afa as i couldnt find anything decent, but then its just my taste. actually i dont think it really matters much. on aros im perfectly happy switching off the decoration on my a4k. pity it doesnt work with icons alike.
