Hey all, MY Amiga Tech. A4000 Tower floppy is acting really odd.
It works intermitantly in the fact that it will stop working all together, like it's getting no power and stay that way for days.
Then, it'll work just fine (no read errors or the such) until it decides to not work again. The light won't even come on :getmad:
any thoughts would be MOST helpful....

It sounds like a bad connection, particularly with
the power plug. I have a hard drive that use to cut
in and out due to the plug from the PSU wearing
out. This doesn't seem as likely from the floppy
connector, but seems possible. I would check
all physical connections including the floppy
cable. Hopefully your problem will not be more
complex than this.

As billchase said, it's more likely to be an intermittent power problem.
If you have the option, use a different floppy drive power connector, most power supplies have two. Sometimes the crimping of the socket pin onto the wire can go dodgy.
Resolder the joints on the 4 pins of the floppy power connector on the PCB, as these can develop solder fractures due to mechanical stress from the power socket. You may have to partially dismantle the drive to access the bottom of the PCB.
I'd also replace the 34 way ribbon cable, as those IDC crimps can develop intermittent problems when you least expect it.

Groovy! Thanks guys, I'll look into that tonight. I hope it IS the power cable and not within the floppy, cause if it is....... :boohoo:

Any luck? Just curious to see if you made any
progress.

What's wrong with that?
If it is the drive, you can just buy another $18 ordinary FDD from just about anywhere!
Oh and buy a Zip drive too! They're great! (I never use my FDD anymore)
