I upgraded to OS3.9 (remembering how nice it was on my A4000T 060/Picasso) but it is disgustingly horrible on my A1200.
IS there a way i can go back to 3.1 without having to reinstall from scratch ?

copy the files from 3.1 disks back to your harddrive? Anyway it takes only 5 minutes to reinstall AmigaOS3.1 :)

Yep, it's not a big deal to copy the 3.1 files onto the hard drive. Just be careful of any patches you might need for large hard drive support (scsi.device etc.), which 3.9 has but 3.1 doesn't.
Out of interest, is this purely because of not having a graphics card? I have 3.9 on an A1200 running in 32 colours. It's not the greatest looking, but that's to be expected, and IMHO is not that bad considering the 20-year-old graphics chipset. Icons are the correct colours and some dithering of the backdrop allows it to look quite reasonable without stealing all the pens...

I wouldn't bother to do an install, I'd just strip the unneeded features away.

Remove the unwanted stuff. Take out Amidock and install ToolsDaemon, skip all romupdates and use blizzkick to just load the updated modules you want (scsi.device, FastFileSystem, filesystem.resource, OS3.9 workbench.library, optimized icon.library). Delete Reaction prefs and install 3.1 ones as these are less buggy and if your system "breaks" you can open prefs without having Reaction installed.
Anyway I don't get why many amigans use all available space and just have one boot partition, it's better to have various partitions and space to create new ones.

Hey dougal, hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread for a minute..
Since my 4gb CF hard-drive perished earlier this month I have decided to jump ship to the conventional hard-drives and i have a 6gb with OS 3.9 installed. My 1200 is mobo 2b, 3.0 rom with blizzard 1220 8mb, fpu, 33mhz.
Hmm so OS 3.9 is better for HD > 4gb but i'm having problems using relockick 1.4 downgrade software and since i never had a problem with OS 3.1 i'm thinking of going back to it. I know whdload solves backwards compatibility in many cases but as everyone is aware not all a500 games have whdload slaves.
So do i just insert floppy wb install 3.0 (or 3.1) and commence install? What is the scsi utility i need to install that enables wb 3.1 and 6gb hd to be compatible? (My 6gb hd is currently in 2 3gb partitions.)
Alternatively, does anyone know a version of relockick that works with OS3.9, (yes i do know to take the disk out quickly but all i get with os 3.9 is a red screen..)
Dougal have you returned to WB 3.1 ?
