Title: New Possible Feature - Ignore News/Thread
Post by: SysAdmin on November 29, 2011, 04:31:26 AM
The ignore member feature has provine to be very popular with some members of Amiga.org. We are exploring implementing a similar feature that allows you to ignore any news item or thread with a certain word string in the title. For example not to pick on CUSA but you could choose to ignore any thread or news with CUSA or CommodoreUSA in the title. This feature would not stop you from seeing the word mentioned in the body of an ongoing thread though. This is still in the works so we would like some feedback on this possible feature before proceeding further.

Personally, I think we need to collectively grow up and learn how to not let every little deviation from our computing microcosm send us into a fury.

Basically, don't be this guy (http://xkcd.com/386/).

I automatically filter out things I'm not interested in reading using my brain.

^^

This possible feature seems silly and childish at the least, and outright patronizing at the worst.  No one is forcing people to read things they are not interested in.

It's a nice idea but there will always be the few that will spoil it and essentially use it as their own little trolling tool.

set title to something they know the target will have blocked. Then troll away.

I can see it been more effort to moderate than with the existing system.

I personally believe this ignore features are lame in concept:

It goes against building a community or whatever you may call it. If you dont like something dont read it, but dont give tools for everyone to start ignoring each other, because more than soon enough, we will be wrapped in our own solitary bubble. I believe a forum must promote tolerance and interaction between members, otherwise it is going against itself.

Everyone has the right to FREELY express something here even if I dont like it, it may even be usefull in some way or another, despite you and me might think otherwise. If that person that wants to express something, is ignored by design (not by a concious, informed choice from the reader), then it harms his/her freedom for expression.

You know, we are not perfect gods by design, and we dont live alone in this world :)

Good luck anyway with this "feature" :)

I am using the 'new posts' search to see all threads with new posts. I would like the feature to mark some threads to not show up anymore in this list.

greets,
Staf.

Does your opinion change if you were to be told this is a precursor to banning people who misbehave?

For example there are any number of topics and threads that you wonder just why someone is posting there?  It spoils it for many to have thread after thread decend into stupid fights.   Whereas others seem to thrive on it.  Now it is those who thrive on it who would be expected to ignore certain threads.

Personally I think it's too little too late.  I am filtering this place out entirely more and more lately.

My post makes not much sense, but that's because I've been very careful to not point any fingers to attempt to avoid a ****storm.

The way I look at it this feature could cause more of a faeces storm than simply pointing the finger. It might start all civil and stuff but how many times have we seen petty arguments and personal grudges turn really nasty. I still stand by my comment that this will cause more moderation headaches in the long run when people start using it for their own personal little wars.

I only engage in threads that I want to be involved in. After all a forum by definition is a place for free and open discussion. If people don't want to get involved in a thread or subject then they should simply not bother posting. I am a big boy and know what I am getting myself into with a debate.

Aj, bans for what?  Speaking your mind, or pointing out holes in logic or pointing out outright lies?  REMEMBER:  You can ignore people!  You can choose not to participate in a thread!  Having a contrary viewpoint offered in a civil, well put tone isn't grounds for banning.

I'm as guilty as the next guy as sometimes going overboard on things, something I am trying to change.

If A.org is going to start banning people for contrary views spoken in honest, civil debate in a civil manner, A.org can go to Hell in my books, lol.

The spirited debate aspect is what is good about A.org, if kept in check.
People get pissed off, shout and yell and disagree, and as long as it doesn't venture into personal abuse it's opinion, no?  Even after a turbonerd debate blowout, no harm no foul - all get together, have a beer and agree to disagree and leave it be.

This whole feature reeks of people unable to avoid what doesn't interest them.  I don't speak/read Russian, so I don't subscribe to Russian newspapers.  Freedom of choice of what to consume, parse, and give input towards without some stupid PHP script doing your thinking for you?

I can do that myself, I've got just barely enough IQ points to handle that, lol.

So with that in place could we bring back Franko? :)

I agree with all the others - it's a bad idea! People should really grow up instead...

If you have it, people that don't like it don't have to use it. Maybe it would be fun instead to have the hated words replaced with "[CENSORED FOR YOUR PLEASURE]", or some such.
